# What salary benchmarking solutions work well for mid-market teams that need solid comp data without paying for a Radford or Mercer report every year?

A common question from mid-market compensation teams, and the one I set out to research here, is what salary benchmarking solutions work well for mid-market teams that need solid comp data without paying for a Radford or Mercer report every year. The aim is credible data without the standalone survey spend. I have listed the salary benchmarking options that stood out to me.

Payscale Ascent (formerly Payfactors) (4.3 stars, 719 reviews): Reviewers describe it consolidating multiple surveys into one benchmarking library, which many use in place of buying separate reports, though several note the cost has risen over time.

Pave (4.7 stars, 46 reviews): Reviewers use it for real-time benchmarking, and some explicitly treat it as a lower-cost check against Radford or Culpepper, while noting the database is smaller than those survey houses.

OpenComp (4.6 stars, 32 reviews): One reviewer moved off Radford GCD citing price and ease of use, and others describe it as considerably cheaper than the big names without losing depth on common roles.

CompUp (4.9 stars, 50 reviews): Mid-market reviewers describe attractive pricing alongside budget simulation and merit-cycle tools, and note its benchmark data is strongest in India today.

For mid-market teams that stepped away from the large survey reports, what did you move to, and where did coverage fall short, if at all? I am especially interested in whether the real-time tools held up for your more specialized roles.

We stepped off Mercer two years ago and moved to Payfactors' consolidated library with Pave as the real-time check. Coverage held for the common roles, and the gaps showed exactly where you'd expect: niche senior IC roles and region-specific data outside the US. For those we buy a single targeted survey cut instead of the whole report, which still nets out far cheaper. The specialized-role weakness in real-time tools is real, but manageable once you know which of your roles are the thin ones.
