Task Management reviews on G2 for cross-functional visual workflows describe flexibility itself as the feature that varies most across these three. Asana's reviewers specifically describe using simple task lists on one project and detailed workflows on another inside the same tool, which is a different kind of flexibility than monday's visual status tracking and automation, which is more about keeping a single, defined workflow moving without manual follow-up.
Smartsheet's linked columns updating automatically across sheets is solving a data-consistency problem more than a workflow-visibility one, removing the specific failure mode where the same dropdown value has to be updated by hand in several places. The post's own question about whether automation actually reduces status-check meetings is probably answered differently depending on which of these three a team picks, since Smartsheet's approach mostly prevents stale data rather than replacing a human check-in, while monday's automation is more directly aimed at reducing the manual follow-up a status meeting exists to replace.
