# What are the top accounting systems for reducing manual reconciliation and significantly improving close speed?

The top accounting systems for reducing manual reconciliation and improving close speed should remove work from the close, not simply move the same tasks into another screen. That distinction matters because broad automation claims don’t reveal whether a finance team will actually spend less time matching transactions, updating spreadsheets, and chasing outstanding items.

For this use case, the useful signals are:

Reconciliations that don’t depend on offline spreadsheets

Clear ownership and visibility across close tasks

Automation that covers journal entries, matching, and intercompany work

Reporting that’s ready soon enough to support decisions

A few products from the Accounting Grid stood out against those needs:

Sage Intacct: Reviewers describe moving bank reconciliations out of Excel and automating journal entries, reconciliations, and intercompany transactions. One senior accountant reported cutting the month-end close by 15 days, while another reviewer said the integrated bank reconciliation saved substantial time.

BlackLine Financial Close Management: Best suited to teams that need more control over a complicated close. The available close-focused feedback highlights one place for reconciliations, supporting documents, outstanding items, and review workflows, with fewer manual follow-ups.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central: A group accountant credited its integration and automation with reducing manual entry and reconciliation work. The same review connected that improvement directly to a more efficient month-end close and financial reporting process.

Rillet: The close-specific feedback is more limited, but it’s unusually concrete. One reviewer said invoice processing and human-reviewed reconciliations reduced month-end bookkeeping from several days to a few hours.

For teams that have materially shortened their close, which change made the biggest difference: automated matching, clearer task ownership, or replacing spreadsheet-based reconciliations? Did the faster close hold up as transaction volume and entity count increased?

My sense is that replacing spreadsheet-based reconciliations is the change that actually moves the needle, since that's the piece that keeps pulling people back into manual matching no matter how much automation sits around it elsewhere in the close. Clearer task ownership seems to matter more for sustaining a fast close than creating one in the first place. Where I've seen it break down is at higher entity counts, once intercompany eliminations start requiring the same manual chasing the automation was supposed to remove.
