# Is per-search pricing worth it for ecommerce search tools?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">Hoping to get a read from the people who evaluate and run ecommerce search tools for a living. I'm trying to work out when per-search pricing actually earns its keep. Comparing pricing models across<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/e-commerce-search"> </a><a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/categories/e-commerce-search">e-commerce search software</a>, the market splits into two camps: vendors like Algolia, Constructor, and Coveo price on API request volume, while Doofinder and Athos Commerce sell flat plan tiers. Neither approach is wrong; they fit different traffic shapes.</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">How I currently read the fit:</p><ul>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/algolia/reviews"><strong>Algolia</strong></a>: pay-as-you-go on search and API requests. Efficient when request volume is steady, since a quiet catalog is not subsidizing an enterprise tier.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/constructor-io-constructor/reviews"><strong>Constructor</strong></a>: usage-based as well, typically quoted on query volume, which rewards stores that can forecast their load accurately.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/coveo/reviews"><strong>Coveo</strong></a>: usage-based with an enterprise lean, so the per-search math matters most at scale.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/doofinder/reviews"><strong>Doofinder</strong></a>: flat plan tiers, so a November surge does not move the invoice. The trade-off is paying for headroom you may not use most of the year.</li>
<li>
<a class="a a--md" elv="true" href="https://www.g2.com/products/athos-commerce-athos-commerce/reviews"><strong>Athos Commerce</strong></a> (formerly Searchspring): flat tiers as well, predictable for seasonal catalogs that spike hard a few weeks of the year.</li>
</ul><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">What I cannot pin down from pricing pages is the control side: how to forecast annual cost when the peak month looks nothing like the average, whether you can cap request volume so a traffic spike or a bot cannot blow through the budget, and whether autocomplete keystrokes count as billable queries or only submitted searches. That last one could swing the per-search math by an order of magnitude on its own.</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">If you have run either model through a full holiday season: what would make you switch, and does your answer change if most of your traffic lands in six weeks of the year?</p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p><p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true"></p>

&lt;p&gt;The autocomplete-keystrokes-versus-submitted-searches question buried at the end of this post is the detail I&#39;d want answered before trusting any per-search quote. That single definition could change the math by an order of magnitude, and it&#39;s exactly the kind of thing that doesn&#39;t show up on a pricing page.&lt;/p&gt;
