As a ML programmer I use XLminer only for first hand gist on data (most often sample size), It can hold limited data size, it doesn't provide me full control on models which is expected from any tool but it has become a trend now to have an API for any tool which may solve these issues.

I think the visual options were limited compare to other tools. Another downside of using it was the lack of flexibility in implementing models. The tool handled the data sizes up to 1M rows.
