The best thing about Nipper is that it completes audits very quickly in just a few minutes, so it removes a lot of manual hassles. It also provides comparison reports, which is another big plus. Honestly, there isn’t much I dislike about the tool. The main thing I do need to mention is that it sometimes gets stuck and throws an error when scanning a configuration file. That may be because the file is large, or because it was generated in a non-standard way, but either way it’s frustrating and interrupts the workflow.

Another issue is the reporting: the CSV format feels far too raw. With only a CSV output, we can’t really track anything meaningful or follow up on findings in a practical way. On top of that, the NVD template doesn’t include solutions for the vulnerabilities it identifies, which makes it hectic to provide fixes manually. These are the key areas I’d like the team to refine. The results from the tool’s assessment are clear and useful. The documentation it provides is already precise and easy to follow. I also like the frameworks and standards it supports, as well as the additional options the user can choose from, such as CIS, NIST, and many more. The GUI is user-friendly: you simply upload the configuration of a network device (for example, a firewall, switch, or router), and it automatically assesses it for misconfigurations and flags findings based on the standard or framework you select. From using it, I’ve noticed a few issues. Sometimes it reports false positives: it will flag a finding, but when I check the device’s own GUI, there isn’t actually a finding there. Also, the CVE vulnerability information for the device version doesn’t seem very accurate. It may flag a version with multiple CVEs, yet when we double-check online, some of those CVEs are already resolved or not applicable to the assessed device version.
