If you miss Notepad++ when using macOS, this is an excellent alternative. **What do you dislike about Textmate?** Nothing really, it's a very capable app, and it is free. Actually, there is an option under one of the menus to add a license key, but if you choose to go to the shop to buy a license you simply get a page saying "licenses are not available for purchase" which is kind of weird. Maybe there's a plan one day to add licensing. Anyhow, right now that's probably the only thing I dislike and even that is trite. **What problems is Textmate solving and how is that benefiting you?** Everyone needs to edit text files - especially those of us who work in IT. Config files, SQL queries, notes, everything - even lightweight code editing without a full-blown IDE. There are a billion reasons you need a text editor, and the included macOS TextEdit is not so awesome. On Windows, we'd use Notepad++ or some other options; on macOS we don't have Notepad++ but Textmate is a great option. In fact, so good, I wish it had a Windows option! Anyhow, it provides a lightweight text editor but with a lot of features - tabs, multilanguage support, all kinds of things. It even persists your unsaved text files between opens. ### 2. As Notepad++ is not available on macOS, this is the best alternative that anyone can think of. There is a number of options that allows you to customize the editor for any of your needs. I found the multiple Carets option really useful as it will allow you to make changes at multiple places at once. Also, there is File Search, Macros, Bundles, and more. **What do you dislike about Textmate?** It would have been better if there is a Terminal integration like the Visual Studio code. Some of the modern text editors have this option and it will allow users to execute terminal commands without leaving the editor. **What problems is Textmate solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am using Textmate for the following purposes 1. I have been implementing it for several years, its versatility on the Mac platform has been to my liking and pleasure. It is worth highlighting that this robust and very complete editor has greatly contributed, it has multi-language support that is also extensible through bundles. Possibly one of the biggest attractions of its extension system is that they can be written in any language, so you can automate some common tasks in your editor using your favorite programming language. For all that has been said, I like it. **What do you dislike about Textmate?** There is something specific that I will review below and the sole reason I will express for why I do not like this program. Since I have been using it, I have encountered programmatic discomfort as Textmate significantly slows down my large files when I need to process them. In this regard, I think they should improve support for editing large files. Without anything else to reference, I conclude. **Recommendations to others considering Textmate:** To conclude this review, I will speak in global terms about my reasons for recommending this tool. There are many in the current market, but this one stands out for its ease of use and versatility, it has worked perfectly with Emacs and OS X as well as for Windows and Linux, although its exclusivity remains for Mac. Something important that I will also review is its clipboard history that allows me to cut several sections simultaneously and paste the code. These are my recommendations. **What problems is Textmate solving and how is that benefiting you?** I note that my primary problem that I solved is related to code folding, which has helped me to hide entire layers of the document being edited, providing a more compact view of the edited code. The folding sections can be selected manually or the document structure determines the foldable areas. Regarding the benefits, it offers me an interesting variety of functions, among others, the possibility of hiding code fragments (in the style of Microsoft Visual Studio.Net). In this sense, I have managed macros and have been able to move portions of code. There are many benefits I could mention, and I also tell you that this tool has support for dynamic snippets, a clipboard with a history function, hierarchical navigation with tree structure and tab management, along with the ability to preview the code in the browser, offer integration with shell, manage CVS. ### 8. It's very light on my Macbook resources while providing me with syntax highlighting for pretty much any language I've worked with. It loads very quickly when opening projects which allow getting into action faster. It does not pollute my projects with a ton of configuration files and I can launch it through the command line on whichever folder I am working on (I happen to be a big fan of the command line and actually don't mind editing files in VIM). **What do you dislike about Textmate?** When working with other people, they will often look down on TextMate, being too simple to be a true IDE. **Recommendations to others considering Textmate:** If you like a big IDE (like Visual Studio Code) with plenty of widgets, TextMate is not really for you. Wide character support is not very good in text mate.
