I have been using Sophos Firewall for more years now in my company, and honestly it has become a big part of my daily work. The thing I like most is the single dashboard control. Everything I need VPN, Web filtering, IPS, application control, reporting — is in one place. I don't have to jump between different consoles like I had to do with some other firewalls I used before joining this company. The Sophos Central integration is something I use every single day. Since our company has multiple branch offices, I manage all firewalls from one central login instead of logging into each device separately. This alone has saved me a lot of time. Earlier I used to spend almost half a day doing manual checks on each branch firewall, now with Central I can see the health status of all devices in a few minutes. Synchronized Security (Sophos Heartbeat) is another feature I rely on a lot. It connects the firewall with our endpoint protection, so if a system in our network gets infected, the firewall automatically isolates that device from the network. I have seen this work in real situations — once a laptop in our sales team got infected through a phishing email, and the firewall cut off its access before it could spread further. That gave me real confidence in the product, not just something written in a brochure. No product is perfect, and Sophos Firewall also has become some area that I feel need improvement, through overall my experience is still positive. The first thing is the learning curve. When I started working on Sophos Firewall, it took me some weeks to fully understand all the menus and settings, especially the rule base logic and how NAT rules interact with firewall rules. The documentation is good, but sometimes the UI itself doesn't explain clearly why a rule is not working the way I expect. I had to rely on trial and error a few times, and also on the community forums to solve some issues. Second, I feel the licensing and pricing structure can get confusing. There are multiple bundles (Network Protection, Web Protection, Central Orchestration, etc.) and figuring out which license covers which feature took me some time initially. For a company like ours which is cost-conscious, understanding the ROI clearly was not simple in the beginning. Once I understood it properly, I could justify the cost to management because the features do reduce manual work and risk, but the initial pricing clarity could be better. Third, the support response time is sometimes slower than I would like, especially during high-priority issues. I had one incident where our VPN service went down during business hours, and the ticket took a bit longer than expected to get resolved, even though it was marked urgent. Once I get connected with the right support engineer, they are usually knowledgeable and helpful, but reaching that stage can take time. Fourth, on the UI side, while the dashboard is clean, some advanced configuration screens feel a bit dated compared to newer competitor products. Navigating deep into advanced firewall rules sometimes requires more clicks than necessary. Even with these points, I want to be fair — none of these dislikes are deal-breakers for me. We did not have a clear picture of what was happening across our network in real time. Threats were often detected late, sometimes only after damage was done. Sophos Firewall solved this by giving us real time monitoring and automatic isolation of infected devices through Synchronized Security. Another big problem was managing multiple branch locations. Before, our team had to individually configure and monitor firewalls at each site, which was time consuming and increased the chance of human error. With Sophos Central, I can now push policies to multiple firewalls at once, which reduces mistakes and saves time. Remote access was also a challenge, especially after the pandemic when more people started working from home. Sophos Firewall's VPN features made it possible to give secure access to remote employees without opening our network to unnecessary risk. The best part of running Sophos firewall is the Synchronized Security ecosystem via Sophos central if you use their endpoint protection alongside the firewall the security heartbeat feature a massive time-saver If a user download something nasty and their mac gets infected the firewall catches the red status heartbeat and instantly cuts them off from the rest of the local subnets and VLANs before it can spread laterally. you don't have to manually scramble to trace the MAC address and shut down the switch port while an outbreak is happening. the web interface is visually clean and having the control center dashboard map out active threats, live traffic spikes and unclassified applications right when you log in gives a great high-level health snapshot also setting up site to site VPN tunnels using their RED (Remote Ethernet device) protocol for our smaller branch offices was surprisingly simple- pretty much zero-touch provisioning compared to the usual tedious IPsec configurations on older appliances. The local web admin console can get a bit sluggish when you're parching through deep packet inspection logs or modifying heavy firewall rules during peak traffic hours the UI spins for a second or two too long through to be fair, they've optimized the backend speed quite a bit in the recent v20 firmware updates so its's getting better. We replaced a fragmented mess of standalone firewalls and unmanaged edge device across our locations. Sophos completely solved our visibility problem. the biggest benefit is having a single, unified plane of glass is the cloud to push network policies manage we interface filtering, and handle SD-WAN routing without needing a massive team to oversee it.
