Multi-threaded math libraries and transparent parallelization in R Server handle up to 1000x more data and up to 50x faster speeds than open-source R, which helps you to train more accurate models for better predictions. R server for HDinsight review **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Kunal K. | ML/AI Developer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** April 03, 2021 **What do you like best about R Server for HDInsight?** As r isn't the most integrated library in terms of big data development, it is extremely helpful HDinsight have a dedicated setup for r server to take any installation steps out of your hands. Ease of setup is extremely handy and much better than setting up a docker container with r yourself. The other option for big data with r would be databricks but HDinsight allows you to write non notebook based code so you can stick to normal script based workflows. Also HDinsight for the most part it cheaper than databricks but obviously if you have massive pipelines costs can rack up pretty easily. **What do you dislike about R Server for HDInsight?** Nowhere near as much documentation/tutorials compared to python samples on HD insight. Since HDinsight is an azure specific product, if you needed to migrate to AWS for example. You would spend more time refactoring than if you used databricks. **Recommendations to others considering R Server for HDInsight:** Do tutorials before and get your head around spark and distributed / parallel computing concepts otherwise you won't get as much benefit out of it **What problems is R Server for HDInsight solving and how is that benefiting you?** Data pipelines which are used to clean and featurize raw data have been implemented via this service, nothing overtly complex. Simply put speed of pipeline is the main benefit. Costs more than our current system but within budget. ### 2. Like switching to Visual studio (though it is a great tool) but I prefer my R studio over it as it gives me flexibility to view and alter dfs at once **What problems is R Server for HDInsight solving and how is that benefiting you?** We're modelling customer journey and their behavior attributes at each step in the conversion funnel. as our data is growing with more number of visitors we scaled up using this tool and it has been nothing but Fast! ### 4. It also eliminates memory and processing constraints and easily extends their code from their laptop to large multi-terabyte files producing models that are more powerful and accurate. **What do you dislike about R Server for HDInsight?** Beyond the inclusion of Microsoft ML, MRS 9 allows R models to be exposed as Web services, which is the same way Azure Machine Learning works. Microsoft points out that with the help of open source API framework Swagger, the Web service deployment means that models built in R can be used from virtually any programming language and platform. Furthermore, with MRS 9, Microsoft says models that are trained in one environment can even be moved to, and scored in, other environments, and that new active-active high availability features in MRS 9 mean these models can be scaled for high-demand production use. **What problems is R Server for HDInsight solving and how is that benefiting you?** R has traditionally been a tool used by individual statisticians and data scientists, from individual desktop computers, on an ad hoc basis, a server version of R, all by itself, is important.
