What is QGIS, and what problem is it built to solve?

QGIS is open-source GIS software for creating, editing, visualizing, and analyzing geospatial data. It helps users turn geographic information—including vector, raster, and database data—into maps and spatial analysis.

What languages does QGIS support?

QGIS supports 1 language: English.

What company sizes and industries is QGIS the best fit for?

QGIS is used by positively rated reviewers across small, mid-sized, and enterprise organizations, with activity clustering in several geospatially focused fields. The strongest segments include:
  • Company sizes: Small businesses, mid-market organizations, and enterprises.
  • Industries: Civil engineering, research, computer software and IT services, environmental services, government administration, and higher education.

What customer support options does QGIS provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

QGIS support options include a knowledge base, email/help desk, and FAQs or forums. The support experience is largely self-directed: users value the community forums and online guidance, while troubleshooting complex issues can take extra searching and effort.

What is the experience like for teams switching to QGIS from another tool?

Switching to QGIS is often driven by the cost of commercial GIS licensing, while its mapping and spatial-analysis tools give users a capable alternative for many established workflows. ArcGIS and its related products are the most commonly named prior tools, with MapInfo also mentioned; users describe adapting to a different interface and learning some workflows as part of the transition. The open-source model can also make it easier to extend access across a team without adding license costs.

What tools and platforms does QGIS integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

QGIS lists 1 integration, GRASS. Users also describe working with it alongside tools and services such as:
  • GIS analysis tools: GRASS and SAGA.
  • Spatial databases: PostGIS, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
  • Web mapping and publishing: GeoServer and WMS/WFS services.
  • Statistical tools: R.
These connections help users bring spatial data into analysis workflows, work with database-stored layers, and prepare or publish map outputs.

What features or capabilities could make QGIS even more useful?

QGIS could be more comfortable to learn and more dependable for demanding projects, while also smoothing map production and plugin workflows. Users point to these constructive improvements:
  • Make the interface and tool navigation clearer, especially for beginners and for locating less familiar functions.
  • Improve stability and processing performance with large datasets and complex operations.
  • Make print layouts and map exports easier to refine for polished, professional outputs.
  • Expand documentation and learning guidance for tools, plugins, and troubleshooting.
  • Improve plugin compatibility and communicate updates more clearly so changes are easier to manage.

"QGIS is a fantastic software for remote sensing and marine and oceanographic data"
5/5
What do you like best about QGIS?

Qgis is the most powerful gis software ever I know, and it is absolutely free and fast developing with many help centers and many training data. Especially it is comfortable to work on remote sensing and spatial analysis. I would like QGIS to dedicate more in marine data analysis. I think there are fewer functionalities and training data available regarding ocean data analysis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about QGIS?

It isn't easy to find some plugins and sometimes QGIS crashes, and in some cases, while performing some analysis, sometimes it works and with the same procedure it fails to perform. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"I used it a long time ago"
4/5
What do you like best about QGIS?

QGIS was for me a very powerful tool to visualize and manipulate data without having the necessity to use an expensive GIS software under a commercial license. The early version I used was already very good in terms of user interface, with a design of icons and menu very close to the familiar Windows environment. The QGIS was perfect for data analysis and printing screenshots of the map on the monitor, as well as calculating buffer zones or editing tables. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about QGIS?

QGIS was poorly developed in the printing settings. To print a meaningful map, adding a legend, labels, and titles was very difficult, close to impossible. In this sense, it was not possible to substitute the use of commercial software. I also dislike the point that sometimes it was crashing after a long time spent in calculation, without giving any output. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful yet lightweight, easy to use and extremely useful"
4.5/5
What do you like best about QGIS?

The best thing about Qgis is how powerful it is - I use paid gis software in my professional occupation and have to say that QGIS is by far the best program out there that provides so much for free. It is reliable - unlike the paid software that I use QGIS never crashes. It is functional and fast to load - I can do almost everything on it and it is for free. This is not a sponsored review, yet it would feel like one because I am grateful and happy that I learned about this program.

I use QGIS version 3.18.0 and I love the fact that it is free and available for both 32 bit and 64 bit, unlike its main competitor that has only 32 bit. QGIS is also available for all operating systems that I use i.e. Linux, Windows, and Mac which is great. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about QGIS?

I am still learning and to be fair the only thing I don't like is that I don't know enough about the program. Some of the tasks that I execute are slightly more time-consuming in QGiS in comparison to other programs out there. However, for a program that is for free and offers so much, I honestly feel that complaints should be out of the question. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great for spatial analysis"
4.5/5
What do you like best about QGIS?

QGIS is a free software that enables data amateurs to discover trends within spatial datasets easily. It's use of plugins and accompanying tutorials make it a great piece of kit and invaluable for any aspiring GIS techies. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about QGIS?

It is not as good with displaying datasets from different coordinate systems. ArcMap does a much better job. Additionally, regarding large vector files, it is more temperamental than ArcMap and certain features, that I take for granted in ArcMap are not as readily available in QGIS (ie: clip raster (Arcmap) - Clipper (QGIS plugin)). "Open source user friendly Geodata Analyst"
4/5
What do you like best about QGIS?

I specially regard this is an open source software, where there's always the possibility to improve by accessing user-base websites or just fast improvement of possible software issues that may appear on the go. It is easily accesible and usable for everyone who wants to start getting into the mindset of georeferenced data. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about QGIS?

You must understand how the software works to get specific outputs, for example the image export section is quite unhandy given that all the layers get exported as one file for graphic tasks. Thus is needed to export manually every layer and then re-format on a design software. Being an open source software there's constantly add-ons or extra features that can be downloaded to add to your workplace, but they don't get seamlessly added to your workplace, making your (QGIS) desktop crowded and hard to read. Basemaps cannot be added directly, you must search the dataset or online server that provides the needed information. Versus other software that work with geodata, this is quite unfriendly for new users and time-wasting for experienced users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
