The learning curve for Matlab in general is quite steep, but those who are familiar with any programming language should be able to pick it up quickly. Our university offers it for free to students and faculty, otherwise the cost of the products is high (if purchasing for personal use). Especially, the company charges an annual maintenance fee for some of their products which means you have to keep paying them even after you purchased the product from them.
