**Reviewed Date:** February 19, 2026

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

It's totally open source. There are no features behind a paywall.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

Besides the efforts to improve the dashboards, they are still not optimal.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Node-Red is great for backend operations. I’ve found it works well in many different scenarios, including IoT, DevOps, data processing, and network monitoring, among others.

  ### 2. A good way to program apps without code

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Diego Felipe M. | C# consultant, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 26, 2025

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

I love to use Node-RED frequently to make POC in a straightforward way because you don't need to code anything, its so easy to implement with other services, the simply graphical drag and drop feature allows to connect blocks of functions without write one line of code, so you can make an entire workflow in few steps and few minutes.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

The graphical approach will limits the option to add code, in certain blocks you can add javascript scripts but you always became limited by the blocks itself, so you need to be careful to maintain the Node-Red architecture once you try to export the design to its code equivalent.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can make an entire solution using preprogrammed blocks, I can modify my workflow only changing the links connections between blocks so it's nice to debug or experiment with many ways to solve your problem focusing on the usage of your application and not in the code. I can recreate a complete API with 3 blocks and 0 lines written, so you can test filters, functions, payloads, so on without the need to have many instances running and paying for each of those.

  ### 3. Flexibility and adaptability

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alessandro R. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

The Node-RED main strength is its simplicity. With a visual paradigm, managing IoT protocols, automation, and technological barriers is a piece of cake for almost everybody.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

Sometimes the number of nodes tends to be high, increasing the complexity and making interpretation difficult. Luckily, grouping and "sub-flow" mechanisms mitigate this frequent problem.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I connected several devices to improve domotics at home: doorbells, intelligent speakers, smart plugs, etc. The default integration provided by the app was limited. Node-RED allowed to integrate all of them defining the control system in details, in a visual way.

It is based on javascript which is probably the most used langauage in the world. Also it has great community support which is quite helpful for beginners.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

The documentation could have been better and in more detailed. There are a few concepts for which there is no clear docs available.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am able to run an Ansible playbook through Node-Red. Typically playbooks had to be run via terminal but with Node-Red I was able to create a node for user input and then initiate a playbook.

  ### 8. Easiest automation and IoT development

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gaurav G. | Student, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2022

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

Node-RED has a list of pre-developed libraries for almost all famous sensors. So, you need not to worry about writing long codes for each and every other sensor on your project. UI will help you to map out whole automation process and sensors.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

Node-RED comes with a bundle of internal dependent files and information which consume a lot of memory. So, if you're running low on memory then Node-RED isn't a good choice according to me.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Node-RED is a tool that makes use of NodeJS and helps in the development of IoT projects. It has a great community and comes with a lot of third-party libraries for the majority of the sensors.

Node-Red is a really simple to use "language" and HiveMQ simply works (seamlessly) with it

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

Nothing to disike about HiveMQ - with the web front end and ability to access the broker via node-red I have apps up and running within minutes (ok, maybe 30 minutes)

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

easy dashboards and display of internet of things information

  ### 11. Node-RED the visual programming tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raghunandan P. | Project Lead, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 20, 2021

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

The best thing about Node-RED is the ease with which we can program. Also, there is a node for everything; for MQTT, HTTP, JS Functions, SQLite, delay, split, I can go on and on. Since it supports npm packages, it is effortless to create any complicated flow. The other thing is since it is visual, it makes it that much easier to troubleshoot. The debug node is also very useful.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

One thing that's difficult to work around is the global / flow variable, especially when multiple messages are coming into the flow with less gap between them. You can always use the delay node at the start of the flow to ensure the completion of the flow before the flow variable gets overwritten. Other than this, I have not experienced anything that I would dislike, and I love it.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were working on an IoT project and used Node-RED for the device communication flow. Relayed heavily on MQTT messages for the communication and deployed on Raspberry Pi. We were able to develop and deploy the flow quickly.

  ### 12. Use friendly free software for connecting hardware components

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Austin D. | Software Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Node-RED?**

I used the Node-Red software for a research project in college where we were monitoring the pressure, temperature, and flow rate of hydrogen in a liquid hydrogen refueling container. I needed software to interact with the various mechanical components, preferably free and open source. The best part about Node-Red was that it was a free solution to our monitoring problem, and there was documentation available for connecting the 4-5 components we had to connect to monitor the hydrogen gas successfully. One example of the use was opening a solenoid valve when the pressure of the gas was too high, and implementing this in Node-Red was extremely easy and convenient.

**What do you dislike about Node-RED?**

When I first began using the software, there was documentation for Raspberry Pi, but we were using the Revolution Pi and didn't find as much documentation related to this product. Over the years, more flows have been added for the Revolution Pi hardware, but the discussion section was also helpful.

**Recommendations to others considering Node-RED:**

I would look into the documentation ahead of time to ensure it supports your hardware needs before choosing it as your solution. If you can find the documentation for connecting, this is a very easy-to-use and user-friendly tool.

**What problems is Node-RED solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A software tool that wires together hardware devices, APIs, and online services can cost thousands of dollars for a single license, but Node-RED offers this functionality free of charge with extensive documentation for understanding the provided tools.
