What is MariaDB, and what problem is it built to solve?

MariaDB is an open-source relational database management system and a popular alternative to MySQL. It is built to manage data through SQL, with MySQL compatibility intended to make switching easier for applications already using it.

What languages does MariaDB support?

MariaDB supports 4 languages: English, French, German, and Korean.

What company sizes and industries is MariaDB the best fit for?

MariaDB is used by positively rating reviewers across small, mid-sized, and enterprise organizations, with IT and software industries especially prominent. The strongest fit signals include:
  • Small businesses: Organizations with 50 or fewer employees.
  • Mid-market: Organizations with 51–1,000 employees.
  • Enterprise: Organizations with more than 1,000 employees.
  • IT and software: Information technology and services, and computer software.
  • Other represented industries: Telecommunications, education, financial services, and marketing and advertising.

How long does it take to implement MariaDB across a team?

Reported implementation times range from under a day to several months, though the most common reported timelines are under a day and under a month. Longer deployments also occur, particularly where implementation involves more complex environments.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Under 1 day Most common
Under 1 month Common
1–3 months Also reported
3–12 months or longer Less common

What customer support options does MariaDB provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Support is available through 24/7 live-rep service, as well as email/help desk and phone support. The support experience is mixed: users value community help and online guidance, while some find dedicated or enterprise support harder to access.

What is the experience like for teams switching to MariaDB from another tool?

Switching to MariaDB is most often described as a move from MySQL, with compatibility helping teams keep existing applications and queries working with limited changes. The reasons include reducing licensing costs, choosing an open-source option, improving performance or stability, and gaining replication or clustering capabilities. Transitions can still require compatibility checks, configuration work, or additional testing, especially with complex or older systems.

What tools and platforms does MariaDB integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

MariaDB offers 6 integrations, spanning search and data services, container orchestration, development frameworks, and content management:
  • Search and data services: Elasticsearch, Redis Software.
  • Container orchestration: Kubernetes.
  • Development frameworks: Laravel.
  • Content management: WordPress.org.
In everyday use, integrations help MariaDB serve as a database behind applications and web projects, fitting into existing development and service environments. Users describe smooth connections in some setups, though compatibility and configuration can take extra work in others.

What features or capabilities could make MariaDB even more useful?

MariaDB could be more useful with easier visual administration and clearer guidance for configuration and troubleshooting. The recurring improvements users would like include:
  • More capable graphical tools: Simplify routine administration, replication, backup, scheduling, and data management.
  • Clearer documentation and diagnostics: Make setup, upgrades, error messages, and troubleshooting easier to follow.
  • Simpler clustering and replication: Reduce the effort needed to configure and manage distributed setups.
  • Broader query and performance improvements: Extend query capabilities and improve tuning for large datasets and demanding workloads.

Is MariaDB considered safe and secure for handling data?

MariaDB is described as secure in practical use, with users pointing to access controls, authentication, encryption, and security updates as reassuring aspects. The experience also depends on careful setup: security configuration can feel opaque, and some users raise concerns about permissions or securing production environments, so teams should plan to configure and maintain access controls deliberately.

"Ideal for web development database management"

What do you like best about MariaDB?

It's great to use a tool that has a secure database, which is critical to our infrastructure. Other applications may be known to be less secure which is what our primary concerns are. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

Migration is not the easiest to use, compared to other applications I have used in the past. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about MariaDB?

FOSS software so you don't have to worry about licensing when using it, very stable and easy to integrate with almost everything. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

It's not 100% compatible with MySQL so when migrating databases you have to fully test it in case something important changed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Excellent Choice for Enterprise"

What do you like best about MariaDB?

MariaDB is something new in the market and toward the starting, I didn't know about making the relocation, but rather it has been extremely easy to use and has demonstrated a great deal of stability and speed. I really like it to be OpenSource with the software under the GPL license. This reduces many costs which gives a point in support while choosing it. I like that it has a large community where there are always people willing to help with any issue. Its design in the servers is quite simple and with very few resources can have the administration operational. I like that the hosting providers have included it at no extra cost, which makes me think of it a lot when I'm going to implement a content manager or an electronic commerce system. What do you dislike about MariaDB?

Although the community has tried to ensure 100% compatibility with MySQL, it is not entirely true when moving to MariaDB. It is necessary to change some data types that are not available. I didn't like that it is necessary to uninstall MySQL on my development servers in order to install MariaDB. This software is fine for small and medium projects, but it is limited when you need a robust database with many long and frequent queries, so for large projects, it is not a good option. "Suitable alternative to Oracle's MySQL"
4.5/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

The open nature of MariaDB is what I liked the most. You can fully see what was applied in recent patches and what they resolved. This is very helpful if a bug comes up and you're trying to figure out if a recent change was the cause. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

Openness. I am sure there are some not legit people looking at recent patches and seeing how they can exploit non-updated servers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A simple improvement of MySQL"
3.5/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

The price is also brilliant, that is, without dismantling. Very aware of rescue statistics. Extremely solid to apply in production structures. The exceptional factor I appreciated about MariaDB is that it became very easy to investigate and use. Additionally, the new features are usually faster for MariaDB. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

It is very difficult to discover what it is that one doesn't like about MariaDB, I suppose the reality is that it is not as scalable as its NoSQL counterparts. The scalability issues arise when the data is in a larger range of TB. This is true for a centralized database and small to medium-sized configurations. Also, from time to time we have faced positive issues with data replication. Additionally, from time to time we face positive issues with data replication. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about MariaDB?

Cluster function for wiki or WordPress, compatible with existing mysql. Most of the time I use it to serve woocommerce and it did really good. A lot of bash web server installation script may auto implement Mariadb to your server environment by default and compare to other paid DB, e.g. Oracle, it's works good enough for a blogger. It will be a good fit if you install the phpmyadmin for db control and edit. Cluster function for wiki or WordPress, compatible with existing mysql. Many configs to follow and some old posts on website may confusing me. The cluster function sometimes broken due to some notes reboot/dead and it can't auto recovered. It works ok in most of the time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

5/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

The fact that it is integrated with the LAMP server package group on the Debian install is great! I can spin up a new server in about an hour and my customers love it! It works almost perfectly like MySQL and is very easy to backup and maintain. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

There is not much to dislike about MariaDB. There's nearly no learning curve from MySQL. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"how good is mariadb"
3.5/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

MariaDB is a database management system that may not be the best, but it can be used for projects. It is lightweight yet adheres to the standards of database creation, indexing, table modification, among others. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

This Database Management System emerged as a result of the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, which was a very good company. I'm not against free software, but there's always a push towards proprietary. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
