What is MariaDB, and what problem is it built to solve?

MariaDB is an open-source relational database management system and a popular alternative to MySQL. It is built to manage data through SQL, with MySQL compatibility intended to make switching easier for applications already using it.

What languages does MariaDB support?

MariaDB supports 4 languages: English, French, German, and Korean.

What company sizes and industries is MariaDB the best fit for?

MariaDB is used by positively rating reviewers across small, mid-sized, and enterprise organizations, with IT and software industries especially prominent. The strongest fit signals include:
  • Small businesses: Organizations with 50 or fewer employees.
  • Mid-market: Organizations with 51–1,000 employees.
  • Enterprise: Organizations with more than 1,000 employees.
  • IT and software: Information technology and services, and computer software.
  • Other represented industries: Telecommunications, education, financial services, and marketing and advertising.

How long does it take to implement MariaDB across a team?

Reported implementation times range from under a day to several months, though the most common reported timelines are under a day and under a month. Longer deployments also occur, particularly where implementation involves more complex environments.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Under 1 day Most common
Under 1 month Common
1–3 months Also reported
3–12 months or longer Less common

What customer support options does MariaDB provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Support is available through 24/7 live-rep service, as well as email/help desk and phone support. The support experience is mixed: users value community help and online guidance, while some find dedicated or enterprise support harder to access.

What is the experience like for teams switching to MariaDB from another tool?

Switching to MariaDB is most often described as a move from MySQL, with compatibility helping teams keep existing applications and queries working with limited changes. The reasons include reducing licensing costs, choosing an open-source option, improving performance or stability, and gaining replication or clustering capabilities. Transitions can still require compatibility checks, configuration work, or additional testing, especially with complex or older systems.

What tools and platforms does MariaDB integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

MariaDB offers 6 integrations, spanning search and data services, container orchestration, development frameworks, and content management:
  • Search and data services: Elasticsearch, Redis Software.
  • Container orchestration: Kubernetes.
  • Development frameworks: Laravel.
  • Content management: WordPress.org.
In everyday use, integrations help MariaDB serve as a database behind applications and web projects, fitting into existing development and service environments. Users describe smooth connections in some setups, though compatibility and configuration can take extra work in others.

What features or capabilities could make MariaDB even more useful?

MariaDB could be more useful with easier visual administration and clearer guidance for configuration and troubleshooting. The recurring improvements users would like include:
  • More capable graphical tools: Simplify routine administration, replication, backup, scheduling, and data management.
  • Clearer documentation and diagnostics: Make setup, upgrades, error messages, and troubleshooting easier to follow.
  • Simpler clustering and replication: Reduce the effort needed to configure and manage distributed setups.
  • Broader query and performance improvements: Extend query capabilities and improve tuning for large datasets and demanding workloads.

Is MariaDB considered safe and secure for handling data?

MariaDB is described as secure in practical use, with users pointing to access controls, authentication, encryption, and security updates as reassuring aspects. The experience also depends on careful setup: security configuration can feel opaque, and some users raise concerns about permissions or securing production environments, so teams should plan to configure and maintain access controls deliberately.

What do you like best about MariaDB?

What I like most about MariaDB is its similarity to MySQL, so if you previously worked with MySQL managing databases with MariaDB will be a simple task. Another feature that I like is that it is totally free. I also like the fact that migration can be carried out without inconvenience. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

MariaDB is completely free and has an easy to manage GUI. Also, it shares the same source code as MySQL, so I don't have any negative comments about this software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about MariaDB?

I like MariaDB because it works under a relational scheme. It is possible to store, retrieve and manipulate data with ease. Another reason I like this software is that it has Aria as its storage engine, which allows complex queries to be made in short periods of time. Also, the data can be easily imported and exported. What do you dislike about MariaDB?

I have not had any problems so far with MariaDB, even its performance is very good thanks to its cache in RAM. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A great tool with high integration"
4/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

The tool comes with an excellent user interface, is easy to set up and use, and is very effective when it comes to database administration. What I highlight most are the Alert Table queries, as in MariaDB you can check progress on a list of processes, so you can always keep a visual track on the progress Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

Lack of personal support community approach Lacks GUI interface as far as I know to install in the Linux desktop environment. I've had some problems with scalability, but that's a small database and centralized data The migration is not the easiest to use, compared to other applications I've used in the past. What do you like best about MariaDB?

Very popular, a fork of the MySQL project after Oracle's acquisition, with a huge community supporting every problem or improving the system's behavior. It is supported on all operating systems. It is often provided in a bundle with various Php and Apache (LAMP for Linux and WAMP for Windows) offering all the tools to set up a Web server (Apache) and implement the logic (Php) using the DB. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

To have a high-performing system with a lot of data, it is really necessary to do very precise tuning, which requires a lot of work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"The transition from MySQL was pretty fast"
4/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

Like most users of MariaDB, we started with MySQL. When we wanted to switch, we thought the process would be tedious, but it actually was pretty quick and effective, with no reconfiguration or reprogramming required. This was great because we hold a big a database and this could’ve been problematic. All the reads on MariaDB are really fast and it’s compatible with all the apps developed to MySQLDB, so we still get to use the best features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

A couple of times I have found cases of malformed data with no particular reason. Also, when erasing cache data it takes too much time for a process so simple. Also, I think it lacks of some features, such as one that allows user to compute median values for the whole database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"MariaDB is very easy to use and is updated frequently"
4/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

For starters, what strikes me most about MariaDB is that it is open source. It is excellent that it has a large community of users that contribute to its development. On the other hand, it has GIS features which facilitates location data queries. In addition, it has excellent accessories such as Connect and Spider to improve storage. I can also highlight its simplicity to migrate, being a replacement for MySQL. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

I think this database manager is not as scalable as it is for example, MongoDB or Cassandra. I have had some problems with scalability, but that is a small database and centralized data. I have also had problems with the cluster, which stops due to inactivity. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"MariaDB is guaranteed solidity"
4/5
What do you like best about MariaDB?

MariaDB offers stability and is open source, which minimizes costs. The important thing is that it is supported on a large platform of users who frequently publish very useful solutions. As for its configuration, it is very basic and does not need a lot of computer resources. I like the modification in terms of the structure of the table in reference to MySQL. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about MariaDB?

I think the debugging tool fails sometimes, because it does not analyze the missing indexes. I also found some flaws in the replication of the database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
