## About Junie
Junie is an AI developer tool and coding agent that provides context-aware code generation and agent-based task execution within software development environments. It is designed for professional software developers and engineering teams who work in integrated development environments (IDEs) and terminal-based workflows. Junie assists with writing, modifying, analyzing, and validating code by operating directly within supported JetBrains IDEs and through a command-line interface (CLI). Junie enables developers to delegate structured or multi-step tasks while maintaining review and control over proposed changes. The system analyzes the project context, including source files and configuration, to plan and execute tasks based on user prompts. It supports common development workflows such as feature implementation, refactoring, bug fixing, and test execution. Junie is available in Early Access for supported JetBrains IDEs and can also be used through a CLI for terminal-based development and CI/CD processes. Key capabilities include: • Context-aware code generation and project-wide edits based on analysis of the existing codebase • Execution of multi-step development tasks, including running code and automated tests • Integration with JetBrains IDE features such as navigation, inspections, and refactoring tools • Command-line interface (CLI) support for interactive terminal sessions and automation workflows Junie works alongside existing development tools to support productivity and consistency across projects. By combining IDE-level project awareness with large language model capabilities, it assists developers in performing routine, repetitive, or structured tasks while allowing users to review, modify, or reject changes before applying them. This approach makes Junie suitable for teams managing complex codebases, individual developers seeking workflow support, and organizations looking to incorporate AI-assisted development into established engineering processes.

## Junie Reviews
  ### 1. Best AI CLI with IDE integration

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2026

**What do you like best about Junie?**

Junie is a terminal based AI CLI which startup time is relatively faster than the other industry based AI CLIs. Junie's intuitive user interface and the navigation is quick and it supports all the commonly used commands, shortcuts and more. Getting started also is very simple and quick. It supports and works in commonly used terminals and integrates well with the frontier AI models. Its auto update feature before starting the program is a timer saver. Junie seamlessly integrates with the IntelliJ IDEs which is s a smart feature and saves time in context switching. Pricing is also competitive where the users can switch between various models. Its AI harness helps in getting things done.

**What do you dislike about Junie?**

Long context window session sometimes I feel like derailing, not sure whether it is due to cache, or system prompt, or underlying models.

**What problems is Junie solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Junie helps in completing the MVP quickly, seamless integrations with the IDEs, and its plugins/extensions saves tons of time. Otherwise we need to search for the right skill everytime.

  ### 2. Deeply integrated AI coding agent by JetBrains

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2026

**What do you like best about Junie?**

The core strength of Junie is its agnostic approach to intelligence. Instead of locking you into a single proprietary model, JetBrains gives you complete control via Bring Your Own Key (BYOK). I can tap into bleeding-edge commercial models (like Claude, GPT, or Gemini) or open-weight models (like Qwen or DeepSeek). With the open-weight models, users have access to much cheaper models.

Furthermore, the pricing model offers excellent ROI predictability. By pairing a standard AI Pro or AI Ultimate subscription with our team's internal BYOK endpoint rates, we significantly lowered token costs.

The agentic reasoning is top-tier: its Plan Mode prevents the typical "hallucination loop" seen in other tools. Instead of writing code blindly, Junie generates a multi-step engineering checklist (.junie/plans) that I can audit, edit, and commit before it modifies a single file. The Live Prompting capability is also a plus, I can steer the agent mid-task or course-correct it in real-time without starting the session over from scratch.

By passing the time-consuming boilerplate and configuration wiring off to Junie, a task that normally eats up half a day of a senior engineer's time was completed flawlessly in under 15 minutes.

Beyond the IDE panel, its git and platform integrations are remarkably mature. It handles asynchronous task delegation natively via GitHub Actions. I can spin up a massive codebase migration, push it to my repository, let Junie execute the multi-file refactoring headlessly in the cloud or pipeline, and review the resulting pull request.

In the desktop IDE, the visual interface blends natively with JetBrains AI Chat tool windows. However, the real star is the Junie CLI. The terminal interface functions as a highly intuitive Text User Interface (TUI). Executing a step-by-step session directly from the terminal prompt makes it feel like a cohesive extension of an advanced developer workflow.

On the support side, if you do hit a roadblock during onboarding, JetBrains has provided an exceptional support ecosystem. They host a dedicated, active Discord server where users can ask for help directly and get answer from the Junie engineering team.

**What do you dislike about Junie?**

High Resource Overhead: Because Junie is built utilizing Java/Kotlin, its local footprint can become incredibly demanding. When running longer development or multi-step agent sessions, the memory and CPU usage spike significantly, occasionally dragging down system performance.

Restricted Subagent Flexibility: Advanced agent orchestration features, like subagents still feel overly restricted. They currently do not allow you to configure custom, user-defined models for specific sub-tasks, which limits the optimization of workflows.

Limited Open-Weight Selection: Junie deserves praise for allowing us to bring our own custom API keys and BYOK integrations. However, when it comes to the open-weight models that JetBrains natively cloud-hosts on its own infrastructure, the selection is mostly limited to families like Qwen and DeepSeek. I hope JetBrains broadens this first-party cloud-hosted catalog to offer a much wider variety of open-weight models.

**What problems is Junie solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Junie solves the common problem of AI agents blindly writing buggy code. Because it is a first-party tool deeply embedded in the workspace, it has direct access to the IDE’s internal semantic index, build configurations, and project structure. This deep context ensures that every modification respects your existing architecture, minimizing errors and context-switching.

Its standout feature is the Plan Mode. Instead of rushing to write application code, Junie first generates a structured, step-by-step engineering checklist (.junie/plans) right in your workspace. You can review, edit, and commit this blueprint before any execution starts, keeping you entirely in control of the implementation path while dramatically reducing wasted tokens.

  ### 3. Game-Changer at First, But Now Trails Competitors on Features

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** František K. | Tester - Analyst, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 09, 2026

**What do you like best about Junie?**

Junie was the first coding agent I tried and actually used. Honestly, it’s been a game changer for coding. Even though the UI felt a bit messy at first, it’s definitely more polished now than it was a few months ago.

That said, when I look at how other tools have developed over time—like Codex, Claude Code, and Github Copilot—it’s hard for me to point to things I really like about Junie. Right now, it feels like every other provider offers more features, and better ones, than Junie does.

**What do you dislike about Junie?**

To me, Junie feels like a coding agent that’s been left behind compared with other coding agents and providers. It doesn’t offer many integrations or customization options. Also, the pricing for Jetbrains AI feels crazy to me—Junie will eat through the monthly limit on the first paid tier in pretty much one productive day. Because of that, the limits just don’t feel reasonable.

**What problems is Junie solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helped us move from manual coding to agentic coding, and that was a crazy change and a real improvement. It was one of the first moments when I realized where AI in programming is heading. It also helped us move much faster, with no more writing unit tests for any code.

  ### 4. Smooth Plan-to-Review Workflow with the Right Model for Every Job

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about Junie?**

The workflow of plan -> implement -> review in combination with the right model for each job

**What do you dislike about Junie?**

It is tricky to select the right model for the job and that are not more open source models are available

**What problems is Junie solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It speed up the development and review process

  ### 5. Junie’s Flexibility Makes Trying Models and Adding an MCP Server Easy

I really enjoy Junie’s ease of use and flexibility

**What do you dislike about Junie?**

The only issue I had was keeping track of junie configs between global and local.

**What problems is Junie solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Flexible multi language coding agent. I've even used it for deploy assistance.
