The most stable and configurable UNIX on the market **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Tim B. | Systems Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2020 **What do you like best about IBM AIX?** I have worked with every major (and many minor) UNIX/LINUX distributions over the last 25 years, and AIX is hands down the most stable and configurable one I have ever used. For example, we had 0 seconds of unplanned down time with our hospital system's Electronic Medical Record for the seven years that it ran on AIX. As with any UNIX/LINUX, if your a skilled and creative administrator, if you can imagine something with regards to configuration, then you can probably make it happen. Finally, IBM support is excellent. You don't get flunkies when you call in a support ticket. You get a professional, seasoned expert who knows what they are doing, often with a direct transfer from the initial call-taker. **What do you dislike about IBM AIX?** The IBM sales team has never been great for us, as it seems bloated and bureaucratic, and they seem to take the attitude that they don't really care if they have our business (maybe IBM is too big?). Also, licensing of AIX is very expensive compared to other operating systems we use, and you don't get any slack regarding licensing (if your contract has expired, you don't get any grace for support...period), so we don't have it deployed for every small use case (firewalls, DNS, etc) where UNIX/LINUX is a good choice; in those cases we use Linux. But the stability of AIX and their Power servers makes up for the licensing cost and subpar sales team. Also, the initial opening of a ticket seems to take longer than it should, but the support you get is great. Finally, IBM's knowledgebase search for AIX is pretty much useless for me (no relevant results ever -- Google works better). **Recommendations to others considering IBM AIX:** Get used to the ODM for some configuration management (much like a Windows registry). It's different from other Unix/Linux and a little hard to get used to, but it does add to the OS stability. Also, AIX is a daunting operating system to those who are unfamiliar with it. It takes some time to master. **What problems is IBM AIX solving and how is that benefiting you?** Mission-critical databases and applications that cannot go down and with heavy loads work great on AIX. We have run our Electronic Medical Record on AIX (now use Red Hat), and we currently run our Finance/Payroll system and some mission-critical clinical hospital systems on AIX. We also run some enterprise backup (Tivoli) on AIX. ### 9. Not too many bells and whistles, but it does its job well. In my association with these machines (>years) never once did i face a OS issues in our application. Maybe the admin teams were that great but we have recently been trying to movr to a cloud based infrastructure and have run into quite a few issues and downtimes. But then again I have primarily worked on AIX and RHEL and prefer these too over all the other flavours of *nix OS'. One you get a hang of the multitude of commands its a breeze running this OS. **What do you dislike about IBM AIX?** Nothing much OS related. I personally love the seamless architecture but my problem is specifically with some.of the utilities options not having a way to bring things back out of the box like for example crontab -r **What problems is IBM AIX solving and how is that benefiting you?** We run all of out datawarehouse applications based on Oracle, Java, Python on AIX based servers. ### 12. With smitty it is easy to use even for novices. The IBM Power CPU is a great processor but I wish AIX could run on Intel. **What do you dislike about IBM AIX?** IBM Sales staff is nearly non-existent. They seem to reorganize every 6 months and I can't remember the last time I saw or even got an email from a sales rep. **Recommendations to others considering IBM AIX:** Technically AIX is a very good, secure and flexible OS but make sure you have good support and sales teams. **What problems is IBM AIX solving and how is that benefiting you?** We've used AIX and TSM for our backup environment for nearly 20 years. The ability to shrink filesystem size live without issue makes it a better LVM than Linux in my opinion. IBM's support is pretty good. The granularity of control of resources with IBM's virtualization is much better than other virtualization options. **What do you dislike about IBM AIX?** Upfront cost is a higher which means most organizations don't pay for enough hardware to be n+1 It's more of a niche operating system which means most software companies don't support it well or port their application to it with little support or missing features. **What problems is IBM AIX solving and how is that benefiting you?** AIX runs all of our on prem unix applications reliably and securely ### 17. The only advantage I have detected so far is the nmon utility, its great for monitoring memory, cpu usage among other important metrics. The lpar reports on cpu and memory are very good, also the filesystem cache feature is great, it puts the most user files on memory cache, using iddle memory for this. **What do you dislike about IBM AIX?** I guess it offers the same as it competitors, power 8 systems run ok, its performance is great. Actually I guess I have zero complaints about rhis product. **What problems is IBM AIX solving and how is that benefiting you?** We currently use this for Oracle 10g, 11g and 12c databases, jboss app servers in cluster enviroments, rac databases , weblogic servers among others ### 19.
