  ### 3. Cloudant for a distributed offline first app.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Joshua B. | Site Supervisor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 10, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Setting up databases in IBM Cloudant is fast and easy.

Most of the CouchDB API is implemented.

Cloudant is likely the best CouchDB replacement on the market. It is compatible with PouchDB and other CouchDB clients.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

The documentation could be more detailed. Some features are not described at all.

Functions pertaining local couch documents are not available. For example, you cant list local documents.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Make sure to optimize your document structures to save on cost. While the Cloudant service is excellent in itself it's also pricey and therefore needs planning to assure that no unnecessary costs are generated.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used IBM Cloudant for a distributed offline first app. It was important to us that we had a master-master database that enabled us to have write access even when no internet connection was available.

  ### 4. IBM Cloudant - a perfect solution for distributing data!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John L. | Translation Consultant - I served in both part-time and full-time capacities since 2007., Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 11, 2020

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

The best thing about IBM Cloudant is the peace of mind that comes from knowing that our data is safe, geographically near where it will be accessed, and is being professionally maintained/monitored by qualified data engineers who know their stuff and who can alert you to any issues that arise.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

As far as I can tell, there are no downsides!

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

It's the perfect solution for database as a Service applications!

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

IBM Cloudant was my first exposure to using a non-relational database as a service (DBaaS). My experience with non-SQL data storage, structuring, manipulation and retrieval was very limited at that time, and I wasn’t sure about “outsourcing” our sensitive data. I found Cloudant easy to use. The built-in resources and JIT support services were amazing. Support personnel provided necessary clarifications and never condescended to this “newbie.”

  ### 5. Reliable no sql db

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 04, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

For our customer, we needed to develop a complete cloud solution. We needed a database, but SQL DB was too strict about performing our goals.
After spent a little bit of time in R&D, we decided to adopt cloudant.
IBM provides a complete managed service, so you not have to care about configuration.
Despite SQL DB, you did not have to manage a strict data structure, but you are free to customize data structure according to your requirements.
GUI is straightforward. Just a few clicks and you can begin to work.
IBM also manages replica so that you can build a very reliable solution into the cloud.
Forget zero downtime.
You can also find very complete documentation on the IBM cloud. Many examples explain what you could do and how you could do
IBM provides several SDK so you can build solutions using node js, java, etc.
There is also an online navigator which allows you to explore your data. You don't need third part tools to connect to cloudant .You can do everything in your browser

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

There is not something disliked, but i spent a little bit of time understanding the price model. I had some difficulty comprehending the query price plan.
Consider every customer wants to know "how much cost it" before starting.
Many times i had to read couch DB documentation to learn something.
Cloudant doc is quite complete, but many times i had to search information using couch DB documentation

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

It's hard to give a recommendation for a product. But if you are looking for a no SQL DB, if you don't want to use MongoDB but you want something similar, IBM cloudant is the right product.
You can leverage your knowledge in node js to write queries, if you've already other IBM services you have not to change cloud vendor to find other solution.
By the way, spend a little bit of your time trying it before selling it to your customer.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Just only one answer."Time to market".In the first phase of the project, we changed many times our data structure to adapt to our requirements. Cloudant allows you to change data structure without destroying db.Do you need one more field? No problem, add it.No SQL script to adapt. You only have to change and "old data" keeps on working as well as the new.
Do you need a system administrator to manage your instance? Answer is "no".
You can log in to your account and perform commons operations without needing help from an administrator.
Talk about support. In case you should face a problem, you have two options:
1) doing by yourself
2) ask support to IBM

According to my experience, Last option is the best
I had to deliver a product no spend time to solve the administration problem.
So support is super fast, you must open chat, provide customer id and in a couple of minutes someone of support will help you to solve the problem

  ### 6. Provision an instance in seconds, no operational concerns, reduced time to market

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 20, 2020

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

It is extremely simple to create an instance and get it running.
Therefore, the effort required to develop a scalable, performant application or proof of concept can shrink significantly.

On top of that, Cloudant provides some capabilities that distinguish the product in the no-SQL landscape, such as full-text search and geospatial queries.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

The creation of complex queries can be a difficult task at first, especially in an environment more used to relational databases and SQL editors/sytax.
When the complexity of the project increases, more attention must be paid in the writing and maintenance of less obvious views.

Another drawback may be represented by a combination of cost and fit to the use case.
It may be stated that Cloudant is more expensive than other no-SQL solutions. I personally disagree with this statement, in the sense that Cloudant provides several features (both functional and non-functional) that contribute to its cost.
Nevertheless, if the use case does not benefit from any Cloudant's specific capabilities, then comparable results for the customers may be achieved with other, generally less expensive options.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

By leveraging Cloudant's ease of use it is possible to flatten the time and effort required to deliver a proof of concept or MVP.
Basically, Cloudant makes a breeze to start developing an application guaranteeing scalability and performance with minimal effort and no operational concerns.

So, a first benefit of Cloudant is the removal of effort and costs related to storage provisioning, database application development and planning for scalability.

Then, depending on the use case, Cloudant's specific capabilities may be leveraged.
For example, a solution involving the storage of text document files may benefit from the full-text search capability built upon the Apache Lucene APIs, which is the search index used by state-of-the-art engines such as SOLR or IBM Watson Explorer Analytical Components, allowing an easy and more efficient search among the text content of the indexed documents.

  ### 7. Easy to use NoSQL Database

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Works really well in combination with other IBM services like openwhisk however it is very easy to use same with Aws services like lambda with help from @cloudant nmp package.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

It takes a bit of time to get used with it’s indexing and querying feature.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

I must say it is worth giving a try while you are evaluating different options of NoSQL databases. I am sure you will be able to use it for your requirement.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using Cloudant we wanted to achieve flexibility of database design, using that we were able to have benefit of maintaining e.g. payments status information.

  ### 8. A really nice NoSQL database

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Deekshith M. | Software Enginner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2020

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

The one thing that I personally noticed about Cloudant is its not only a best choice for a NoSQL database but also an ideal fit for applications that handles geo-coordinates. For example, USGS applications.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

This isn't something about the database itself. There could've been better video content made available for the users.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Overall it's a good choice for NoSQL database.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used this for a personal project of mine, which analyses the earthquakes data from the USGS API. I found the filters for latitude and longitude very useful to retrieve the objects that fall under the circle I'm looking for.

  ### 9. Smooth UI and easy to work with even as a beginner

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kopal S. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

The best thing I liked about Cloudant was the easy navigations and the ease with which I could pull out the data.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

One thing which I didn't like was that anyone with the credentials could make changes to the database. May be there should be some version control inside of Cloudant where a manager or admin can only approve the changes, if at all required.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my previous organization, I used IBM Cloudant to store documents of chatbot's conversations to provide solutions step by step. The documents were written in HTML/CSS format to show a little UI.

  ### 27. Distributed Database on cloud

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Veronica N. | Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 04, 2019

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Dashboard to manage db and its content, is really good.
Monitoring features, to provision DB use is a valid tool to gather information on throughtput, number of reads and number of writes.
Database is classic document-oriented DB, nothing special.
Also, query system in JSON style is very intuitive and powerful.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

Thinking in a classic way (SQL oriented) is very difficut to make valid queries without wasting time dealing with the JSON-like format required to retrieve information.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Free version can be a good choose during development startup.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Fast database based application development, with no needs to spent time to project database scalability.

  ### 28. Instant REST access to your data from anywhere

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Carl L. | Mobile Lead, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2019

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Cloudant allows me to access my data from mobile and web apps without having load database drivers or create CRUD APIs. It can be provisioned and up and running in minutes and modified with ease. You can very easily change the data structures and information captured. The addition over CouchDB of GeoJSON makes visualizing the data on a map very simple. It was very easy to integrate with PouchDB for local storage on mobile devices when network connectivity was unavailable.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

Since it is NoSQL, a relational background can be a detriment. Moving from SQL queries, tables and columns to documents in a repository can be jarring. It is difficult to set up complex queries into the data without some additional training.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Learn about NoSQL and carefully consider your use cases. That being said, Cloudant offers a great way to experiment with the data without being tied down to a given structure.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Cloudant allows me to enable data capture at the edge. Getting data from field devices right to the cloud is quick and painless, allowing instant capture and response.

  ### 29. Simple to get running

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sal U. | Programmer analyst, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 12, 2019

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Setup is a breeze and no drivers required to access the data. Integration with things like pouchDB for offline storage and sync makes creating offline ready web apps very simple. GeoJSON is a great addition over couchDB, since it has quick default views of data points on a map. Also, love the fact that I can modify the data fields(attributes) in documents without the need to modigy tables.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

Views and queries can be a bit complex to set up originally. There is a learning curve when coming from a relational db background. Lack of good code, index, query examples on the IBM site. CouchDB is a great resource when starting out.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Get familiar with NoSQL databases and REST security. It makes the transition very easy.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Simple data capture from web apps with quick deployment. It makes setting up demo apps and PoT efforts a snap with no time lost in provisioning systems or contacting engineering groups to stand up a new database. No DB knowledge required to start creating records (documents) in a data store.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Make querying easier. Make writing those views (map / reduce) easier and more interactive.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Most of our usecases are transactional, but very small datasets for our microservcies, so we were trying to fit in Cloudant db as that's the only db offered on our catalog with replication, encryption at rest, and other compliance stuff

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

It's efficient and dependable enough to run our employee search, which is really handy for my job,

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

It does not work very well in our Citrix environments.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Make sure to reallly understand which version is best for you. Also, know what you're buying.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's difficult to set up from scratch time wise.

**Reviewed Date:** May 07, 2018

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

The most part is that anyone can easily set up and can scale their db. The app I used needed backups in case if the data was lost, so it helped me in getting the backups and create our own manual backup if needed

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

The initial implementation involved a lot of steps and switching between different services was very confusing.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

storing relational data in the cloud and reduce the interruptions.

It was very easy to store and access data from multiple locations

  ### 38. Best cloud-based service

Cloudant's service provides integrated data management, search, and analytics engine designed for web applications

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

To have a sort of LUW - Logical Unit Work when many documents are involved into a single update process.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

IBM Cloudant is a fully managed JSON document store for progressive web and mobile applications that maintain data access and availability at extreme scale.

  ### 39. Very impressive choice for JSON database.

**Reviewed Date:** October 05, 2017

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

Back by big blue. That says a lot. The interface to modify and update the database was very nice. It had most of the features I would expected from a big service like IBM.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

THE PRICE! They really didn't seem to do their homework. Competitive products with more features are much cheaper. Seems to only have the base CouchDB engine with 3 additional features.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Shop around. There are other CouchDB-ish hosting companies. Make sure the program fits your needs. Features over support.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were looking for ways to offload data management to a cloud based service. We were able to see the potential in scaling to millions of transaction per day with very little effort.

  ### 40. A good product for CouchDB beginners

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

--Cloudant Sync : For now Android and IOS SDKs are available for sync functionalities and more for IOTs and .net are on the way . Cloudant Sync's local db have almost al feature of CouchDBs view model . You can create view indexes and query them on local devices . When device is offline all the data are stored on local DB . When networks come it sync device with cloudant and this is working like a charm for me.
--User Interface : IBM has done a great job creating cloudant UI it is very easy to use and straight forword.
--Cloudant offers all CouchDB functionalities out of th box like Cross-Datacenter replication for both with remote or shared database.
--Cloudant also offer both database model for business where either you can use shared database or can host your custom nodes across the geographic region .
--Supports geo-special indexing and querying ,

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

-- Pricing : Cloudant is free(shared database) for small extend of use but when you create a large amount of key value pair you are easily gonna cross the uses limit after that price you pay is very expansive.
-- Platform Limitation : Although cloudant is independent of platform cloudant sync is only available for android and ios it leaves windows and blackberry platform which also cover some amount of market . also it has less functionalities compare to couchbase lite like sync gateway.
-- Cloudant has a very good dash board for limitation but due to security override it is difficult to use many plugins in this database where as couchbase comes with more plugin support out of the box.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

If you are beginer or a startup you can use this product it has more than enough resources to get you live . You can easily go live without any prior couchdb experience but if you are large business than consider other option also my Favorited couchbase

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We uses this initially while migrating from mongo db but later on when we realised that it is becoming too expansive for our customers so lateron we hosted our own couchbase server with multiple nodes and that is cheap compare to cloudant.
It has almost all benefits of couchdb and it offers more uptime for your sever as all maintenance is done by cloudant .

  ### 41. Excellent technical support but sales people are a crime.

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Micha v. | Co-Founder & Managing Director, Computer Games, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

We worked very close to the technical team in UK. They have very good ideas and more then open to give the right feedback and help you to the next steps. We had many troubles with combining Cloudant on an Amsterdam server and Microsoft Azure somewhere in West Europe. The technical staff was reacting fast to find out that there was a router problem with at Azure.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

Our experience is that the sales team from Cloudant is the worst nightmare. They give the wrong advice and try to sell the biggest configuration possible. The only thing that counts is sales, sales and sales and do not care about startups and what the needs are from the client. Also the administration is a mess. Wrong invoices, invoices with a delay from 4 a 5 months is quite normal.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

DO research what you really need. Cloudant sales always try to sell the max.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Scalable full service cloud solution where you do not have to take care of backups, peaks on your database when you launching a new game.

  ### 42. Cloudant Review

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2016

**What do you like best about IBM Cloudant?**

I used cloudant late in 2014 for our couchDB host provider. It was a great platform for getting us rolling at first, we had a hosted couch solution out of the box with no configuration and security to worry about. THey take care of everything for you and make the ramp up time is minimal. It has all of the features you'd expect from Couch, views, reducers and rest like data queries. Overall it's quick and easy.

**What do you dislike about IBM Cloudant?**

It's pricing. We ultimately had to dump it because we had a very write heavy application that had a lot of versioning and would write hundreds of thousands of records in a day. If you have an application that needs a store and is not write heavy this is the solution for you.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM Cloudant:**

Bulk Posts. Get everything in there at once if you can, it gets expensive in a write heavy situation.

**What problems is IBM Cloudant solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We used it for data storage of a web mining application to process info we scraped and transform it.
