There are many built-in features that make it extremely powerful such as the ability to use Google Spreadsheets as your database or connect to any outside databases or APIs using the URLFetch commands. You can not only use this to feed data into a spreadsheet but can also build full featured web applications on top of it. It is an awesome development platform and you get a seemingly infinite amount of resources to use. It allows you to connect your Google Sheets with Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and numerous other services. A TON of scripts can be found online, and even with only a rudimentary knowledge of coding, I have been able to Frankenstein scripts together to accomplish numerous things. The usage limits are very generous, and it will not end up costing you extra $$ to create very sophisticated automated workflows. If there is specific data you need to get into a Google Sheet from an outside source, I've found most out-of-the-box tools like Zapier to be very limited, whereas Apps Script had the power and customizability to do exactly what I needed. **What do you dislike about Google Apps Script for G Suite?** Apps Script uses some version of JavaScript, and there is definitely a learning curve to get started with it. Getting reliable scripts does take some skill. Example 1: Getting the "Something went wrong" dialog. Something specific triggered this dialog. Can you at least try to be a little more helpful with information? Worse yet, the dialog blocks me from saving hours of my work. The Dismiss button DOES NOT dismiss the dialog. The dialog blocks is a top-level window that keeps from from working with the editor pane underneath. So I am prevented from trying to salvage my work. Example 2: The API documentation needs work and leaves out important details, leaving users to figure things out on their own via trial and error. For example, for a Sheet's Range, getFormulas() returns a 2D array of Strings representing formulas. An empty String shows that no formula was found in the corresponding cell. Google's documentation doesn't explain what happens when setFormulas() is used with that same 2D array. You might expect that added or edited formulas in the array would update the corresponding cells with new formulas and that blank values in the 2D array would leave existing cell contents alone. Not true and not document. The empty Array values ERASE prior contents of the cells. This is a design flaw but I could have worked around it more easily if it had been better documented. The documentation for Apps Script and its API is far inferior to the API documentation for other platforms, e.g., Java. You leave me guessing and wasting time by searching for answers from other users who have had similar problems. **What problems is Google Apps Script for G Suite solving and how is that benefiting you?** Validating fields in a Google Sheet and automatically propagating and calculating new values require more extensive functionality than typical formulas provide. It allows me to generate tables of acceptable values for cell ranges and then replace user-entered values to a formula reference to a hidden table of acceptable choices. This makes it easy for me to validate user entries, where a menu of choices is too long and cumbersome. Moreover, it makes maintaining the data easier since I can edit the target of the formula reference and have the change reflected instantly through the multiple sheets of a spreadsheet app. I like the power and the customization that Sheets and Apps Scripts provide me but I grind my teeth in frustration at the poor API documentation and the design flaws of the IDE's editor. ### 16. First off, sometimes when there is an error in your script, it can be a little difficult to tell what has gone wrong - meaning the error information is very vague, but this is similar to using any scriptwriting app. Secondly, because Google is constantly making updates, sometimes when you find a script to use from an older forum it will no longer run the way it used to when the author made it. Not all functionalities are recognized, and the format of responses sometimes make setting up arrays or using certain functions tricky. I had to do a lot of editing and researching to convert my "normal" code to work in Google. I am currently overhauling a major information access system from within a our SAAS CRM into Google Fusion tables via the Google Apps Script. The information is initially entered using a Google Form that I have set up as a workflow. Aside from triggering emails to facilitate and track the process of the workflow the data is entered is stored in a Google Sheet. In the past I have used a merge document option to display data and simply pasted it into the CRM. However, frequent changes to that data required Admin access to the CRM and thus consumed a lot of my time. Google Fusion tables can display that data as cards (which can be customized using html) and I can simply insert the URL to the published card in the CRM. I can allow the owner of the information access to edit their own rows within the fusion table and eliminate my need in the ongoing information update process. What Google Apps script facilitates in this situation is the automatic sync from the Google Sheet entry into the Google Fusion table upon the Google Form Submission. So there is no up front change to the process for the users, only in the ongoing maintenance portion. This has been received well because I had required a workflow form submission to be sent for all information changes, after complete adoption this will be unnecessary and they will be allowed to edit the information in Fusion Tables, which immediately updates the Fusion Card Display. ### 41.
