We have compared the results of the security vulnerability scans to other product scans and confirmed Fortra VM is a great value for us. Our teams use the security vulnerability scans to assess our endpoint posture and the reports help our teams narrow down on where we need to perform remediations and address critical and high risk findings. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** To be honest, I can't recall anything I dislike about the platform and service. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Fortra VM compliments our external CISA sponsored vulnerability scans. This and the notes features keep our team on the same page while remediating vulnerabilities. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** Currently, my biggest concern is that there is no way to get debugging or command-line access to the scanners. The best would be a remote console into the scanners from the dashboard that would allow us to do things like connectivity tests in a customer's environment without having access to their network itself. A debugging view of what a scanner is doing during a scan would also be beneficial, possibly access to a log file from a scan's run to better help us troubleshoot failed scans or failures to discover anything. Finally, I continue to find broken links and references to documentation that's moved throughout places like frontline's site, AWS marketplace, and the dashboard itself. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Helping us better understand customer environments and find vulnerabilities that we can assist them in remediating. There are suggestions on how to fix each detected issues. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** The active view page does not seem accurate. I correct issues on scans, then re-scan, and it goes away on the new scan, but it does not ever leave the active view for some reason. The UI is good overall, but if you're looking at a vulnerability its tough to jump to systems affected. I suspect there were one or two false positives on missing patches. The systems scanned had all of their patches. Reports dictate how to remdiate and improve your "grade". There are some similar better priced options out there in my opinion. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** The biggest downside would be pricing and the inability to fine tune it yourself in a lot of areas without using support to do so for you. Until you dial everything in expect a lot of alerts as it seems to try to brute force devices on your network, and if you have any form of reporting setup via email - it can get a bit ugly. **Recommendations to others considering Fortra VM:** Is a good product but a bit on the pricey side, but very hands off. If you're looking for something turn key to generate nice reports and alert you to any vulnerabilities in a user friendly portal then this is it. There are, however, other tools that will do basically the same thing for a fraction of the price, just without all the bells and whistles and require more setup and management. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Depending on network size, it can find some old devices that are out of support or unpatched, so it definitely helps in those areas as well as external scans to find any weak spots in your security. ### 26. They walked us through setting up both the internal and external security scans on our network. Once a quarter, we get a detailed report of every device internally. Not only will it list the vulnerability that needs to be remediated, but in most cases, it will give detailed instructions on how to remediate it. This little extra in the report saves a lot of time in researching when trying to remediate issues in a large network. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** I could be wrong about this, but I believe you only get so many scans a year or a quarter. So far, I have been able to do re-scans on individual assets without any issue. My score may change if I run into a limit. I would not want to wait until the end of a quarter to make sure an asset is 100% good to go. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Discovering severe CVEs that you did not even think about patching (because you didn't realize it existed) is worth its weight in gold. Remediating assets also gives me something to do on those slow days. ### 27. This makes it easy to click through and see what vulnerabilities exist, and also which devices have vulnerabilities. The lists are highlight via severity so you can focus on which ones are most severe first if you prefer. When questions have arised in the past the customer support has also been responsive and able to solve the problem. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** I don't have any major dislikes, but in some cases I wish the details on some vulnerabilities could be more specific with solutions. Sometimes the solution is clear, but other times it can be more vague, or it may not be clear which patch is the correct patch for the machine if there are multiple versions of the patch. Also creating your own scan from scratch is not always that intuitive when setting them up, if you are not experienced with the scan settings. **Recommendations to others considering Fortra VM:** When setting up an account, try to learn how the different scan settings work. We have a monthly scan set up with predefined settings that allows us to rescan vulnerabilities found in the scan using the same scan settings which is easy, but it's also nice to be able to create new scans if needed. There are different settings for internal and external scans, as well as for authenticated scans versus scans that are not authenticated. Knowing how that works is essential when setting up new scan types on your own. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are able to maintain a high score on our network security by reviewing the Frontline scans and correcting vulnerabilities, especially critical and high vulnerabilities. The scan reviews have been very beneficial not just in keeping our company's network secure, but helps keep our audit score high during annual audits. ### 29. The reports are very easy to decipher, scanning has been super smooth, and their support has been quick to respond and helpful with each step in the process. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** So far we haven't found anything I could say we dislike about the product or services. I create accounts for our clients in the cloud portal and it requires little to no training for them to get the hang of it. The interface is intuitive, and besides occasional lagginess, pretty responsive. I can set up a virtual appliance and cloud portal in under half an hour and get scheduled scans and reports to the client within the same day. Their support team has been open to my suggestions and quick to CC the developer team to make improvements or fix bugs. **What do you dislike about Fortra VM?** The "threat rank" feature (comparable to Nessus "VPR") seems half baked. The ranks don't seem to be updated at frequent intervals and assigns questionable scores to SSL/TLS type vulnerabilities that exist in apps that don't transact anything sensitive. I'd like for signatures in general to be added at a quicker pace (e.g. new critical Exchange or Windows bug comes out, I'd like to see a signature within the same day). **Recommendations to others considering Fortra VM:** Frontline is cheaper the more IPs you're scanning. If you know ahead of time you're going to be scanning big IP blocks or on behalf of other organizations, purchase the higher tier. **What problems is Fortra VM solving and how is that benefiting you?** Frontline helps prioritize vulnerability remediation, provides detailed remediation guidelines, and consistent tracking of remediation progress over time.
