## About Faronics Deep Freeze
Deep Freeze is a system restore software solution that preserves computer configurations by returning systems to a predefined state upon restart. It falls under the category of endpoint management and reboot‑to‑restore software, designed for IT administrators managing shared or public‑access computers. Deep Freeze is commonly used in educational institutions, libraries, corporate training environments and other settings where devices are accessed by multiple users. The software functions by 'freezing' the desired system configuration. Any changes made during a user session - including software installations, downloaded files, or system setting alterations - are discarded upon reboot. This ensures a consistent, secure and predictable computing environment while significantly reducing IT workload and support requests. Key features and benefits include: Reboot‑to‑restore functionality: Automatically resets systems to their original state with each restart, eliminating the need for manual reimaging or troubleshooting. Custom configuration options: Allows the creation of Thawed partitions where users can store files permanently, supporting operational flexibility. Prevention of configuration drift: Ensures that malware infections, software misconfigurations and user‑introduced changes do not persist. Centralised administration tools: Supports remote deployment and control via cloud‑based or on‑premise management consoles for multiple devices. Extended device longevity: Reduces downtime and maintenance, helping organisations maximise their IT investment. Deep Freeze is especially effective in high‑turnover environments where user activity can compromise system stability. By automatically restoring machines to a clean slate, it helps organisations maintain reliability and reduce operating costs.

## Faronics Deep Freeze Reviews
 ### 1. Essential for Protecting Lab Computers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James M. | Senior Technology Integration Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 11, 2026

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

I like that client install and configuration changes are easily done through the admin console with Faronics Deep Freeze. The software provides the ability to install remotely and manage settings, which is a great benefit.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The server install seems a little antiquated.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Faronics Deep Freeze to protect lab computers from inadvertent OS changes, manage storage by erasing profiles upon restart, keep computers clean, and allow for remote management.

 ### 2. Keeps Laptops Clean, But Enterprise Management Is a little Complex

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jon S. | education project officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 04, 2025

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

It's the ideal software to manage our course laptops. To let them stay clean every time the laptops are turned off and on again

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

We use the enterprise version at the moment which makes management more complex.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We frequently work with groups of students who use our laptops to develop their computer skills. These laptops undergo heavy use, and Deep Freeze has proven invaluable in keeping them clean and simplifying maintenance. Additionally, it streamlines the process of deploying Windows Updates and other software updates, making our management tasks much more straightforward.

 ### 3. Deep Freeze Works Great For our Appication

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tony M. | Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 31, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The ability to wipe session data and essentially restore machine to a clean status.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

I would like some more audit capabilities built in but I use other software for this.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

Deep Freeze is a unique tools that is valuable for quick assurance that a device is clean and restored back to its initial state. And it does it well.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use this for public kiosks and need to be sure that we protect users and the system. Being able to essentially restore to a clean image after each session is great.

 ### 4. Don't run a computer lab without it!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nathanael C. | Network Systems Specialist, Primary/Secondary Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 13, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Deep Freeze takes a snapshot of the computer it's installed on, saves it in a partition, and restores that snapshot every time the computer is rebooted. This is a godsend for school computer labs, and any other situation where users might cause destruction to the OS, such as accidentally downloading malicious files or changing configurations they're not supposed to. One quick reboot and the computer is restored to its former glory.

There are four components to the system: the Seed, which prepares a unit to receive Deep Freeze, the Workstation client, which is installed on PCs to be managed, the Configuration Administrator, which allows you to set policies for your clients, such as when they get Windows Updates or when they shut down, and the Enterprise Console, which is installed on a network server in order to manage clients.

The Seed and Workstation Client need no explanation, they're a simple and quick install like any other executable.

The Enterprise Console is simple to use and understand, and has a lot of other options such as Wake on LAN support, Windows Update, and remote launching apps on the client.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The Enterprise Console frequently refresh and it's easy to lose your place in the list. This has been a problem in several version and drives me a bit nuts to be honest. Also, their Wake on LAN solution is a bit hit or miss so if a client is offline or not able to contact the Deep Freeze server, you have basically no control over it.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For years, we have used Deep Freeze in K-12 computer labs to provide always-ready computers that are easy to use and easy for us to maintain. Once the Seed and Workstation Client are installed, the PCs automatically report back to our server, and we can push Windows Update maintenance periods, automatic shutdown schedules, and even create a "Thawspace" so that our testing software can run off the local hard drive and be unaffected by Deep Freeze's rewrite after every reboot.

Despite the concept, Deep Freeze really doesn't slow down a unit much if at all. Reboots even occur about as quickly as they would without Deep Freeze installed, and any slowdowns are well worth not having to constantly re-image our computer labs.

 ### 5. Solid answer for public kiosk systems

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shon O. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

My first implementation of Deep Freeze was for a couple of public use kiosk systems in a hotel. I was having to do system cleanups from drive-by malware infections on these systems roughly every 3-4 weeks. I installed Deep Freeze on the systems as a test and after 2 years now I have yet to do a cleanup on either system.
Very simple to unfreeze the OS to do regular updates and maintenance and freeze it again.
Onsite hotel staff can simply reboot a system if a user borks it up and have it back up and running in minutes, no service call needed.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

A time-based temporary admin bypass would be helpful, I find that people forget to refreeze the OS if they are allowed to do a simple install task. An auto freeze timeout for a temporary bypass account would be helpful so it would refreeze the OS after X minutes.
It would also be handy if the product could be integrated into some existing RMM solutions available currently for a SPOG system.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

Get a system and do some testing with a trial, go out and purposefully mess up the system and reboot, pretty hard to make a better selling point than that.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Deep Freeze is a must have for managing and maintaining public facing systems. This will cut hours off of management time per system every month.

 ### 6. Great for student labs

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 29, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The software is simple to use and gets feature updates regularly. You can make a hidden thawspace (with Data Igloo, that is included) and redirect windows logs or registry keys for software that needs to dynamically update for licensing purposes.

Security is great with this as a reboot clears any data or changes left on the machine.

The software also allows you to manage your PCs by shutting them down and turning them back on to save on power usage. You can also send automated messages to users and setup times for windows updates to run. Windows Update features now know if the system is in a pending reboot state after getting an update and will reboot the PC before the maintenance interval.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

There isn't much I don't like that hasn't been addressed with updates. It is necessary to keep maintenance as every windows feature update may cause issues. You may need to delay feature updates and upgrade the console before your client PCs, but this is really a Microsoft issue and they have done a good job keeping up.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

If you are not using Virtual Desktops, this software is a must have.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problems is computer lab PCs must be protected from unwanted changes and the benefit is a great management tool.

 ### 7. the Best choice for Training room/ kiosks/ or visitor machines

this product makes managing multiple PC simple. if your setting up a classroom or lab machines or training room this is a no brainer. this allows you to maintain consistent performance without any additional tasks other than to reboot the machine.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Dont get the standard version as this makes windows updates tedious. if you upgrade to enterprise this will automate patching

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

upgrade to enterprise as the basic version doesn't include the ability to automate windows patches.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we are using this in a training room environment and in open use machine for the public. Before buying this maintaining these machines was difficult and had constant complaints about the machines being slow.

 ### 8. Perfectly Operational

**Reviewed by:** Claire Z. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Fast with restoring and rebooting! And I love that it automatically updates and maintained itself.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

There as no free trial option so I was forced to do a lot of my own research before making the decision.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Installation of software that was not wanted sometimes that was install knowing or not knowingly. As well as developing a restart schedule on computer.

 ### 9. Deep Freeze in the lab

The price can get expensive when you have more than a few stations.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

It is worth the money if you have remote sites that you need to "control" and not worry about.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have several lab PCs that are "abused" my users and this locks them down.

 ### 11. Excellent software to protect public computers

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** June 29, 2020

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Reboot and all is reset back to your chosen state of operation.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The configuration was a bit tedious but well laid out, small icons for older eyes.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Student computers in Labs and libraries and loaner devices.

 ### 13. Makes managing computers easy and keeps them clean!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2019

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

I like that when a user has an issue or downloads a virus or deletes anything pertaining to the OS that if I restart, it is a clean slate! Also if our students decide to place their homework or anything on the desktop, it is gone the next day or restart.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The enterprise console is a little picky at times on waking computers on LAN, but that could be our network making it an issue.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can implement restart schedules on computers to wipe out any changes a student has made on the computer or homework that they saved that they are not supposed to. If something breaks, we just restart!

 ### 14. DF Enterprise (within Higher Ed)

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Seth B. | Applications Administrator, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 17, 2019

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Love how you can install it, and let students pretty much do whatever on the machine. then once rebooted, it goes back to "default" and ready for the next user. I also like using the Admin Console where i can see all the computers, who is logged in, if the computer is frozen or thawed, and what version of DF. Also like the idea of having different configs for different rooms\labs. The program also is password protected so to even use it, you have to type a password. And it does not show up in Add\Remove Programs.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

What i don't like is the non-cloud version console does not support Macs. So we have a console for windows computers then on a Mac, we have it install for the Mac clients. Sometimes when we thawed lock the machine, and do our stuff, then freeze the machine, it sometimes shows us in the console the machine is frozen, but it's still lock. We then have to reboot the machine and try again.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

The Enterprise Edition is great, but maybe getting the Cloud-based edition would be even better, but since we don't have a lot of Macs currently, our current setup is ok to work with.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allow us to let students use computers with few restrictions, and if they delete files\folders, then a simple reboot will restore them. The flip side if they save files to the hard drive, and reboot, those files are not recoverable. We have it configured to reboot daily and every weekend they thaw and install updates.

 ### 15. Great but could be more user friendly

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 28, 2018

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

It is a great software! Plenty of utility and works well all the time

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Not user friendly for beginners and lacks some premium features. No comete remote control of devices supported

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Prevents library users from installing or uninstalling software and keeps cokputers running safely

 ### 16. Tool for Public Computer Sustainability

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 19, 2018

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Product reliably restores the set configuration on each reboot. We can comfortably leave the public computers in use after hours and not expect support calls.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Without a license upgrade, updates take some consideration to implement through scheduled tasks.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

There are licensing tiers depending on what options you want to include in your Deep Freeze subscription. the base package is cloud portal, but also includes some limited update options. Higher tiers allow easier updates for frequently used software, but cost more.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Deep Freeze prevents users from modifying configurations on the computer in a lasting manner (such as sound or video settings) . Because of this, we can reliably assert that after a reboot, the computer will be functional for the next user in a public setting.

 ### 17. BEST SOFTWARE FOR A SAFE SYSTEM

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** RAVI B. | EXCEL & DATA PARSING EXPERT, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The deep freeze software is one of the most useful software's I use. I no more need any kind of anti virus software's since I started using the deep freeze software.
This deep freeze software saved me lots of time, effort and money for other antivirus software's etc.

.The Deep Freeze software allows the users to freeze the system attributes at a position where you want.
.This position of the system is changeable.
.If there was any crash in the system, with a restart of the system, everything will be back to the previous stage where the system is frozen using the deep freeze.
.There is no scope for retaining any kind of virus because of the presence of deep freeze.
.The system retains the previous frozen state when ever it is restarted.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

There is nothing i dislike about the deep freeze software. This software saved my system from effecting with any kind of virus since years. I dint get a need of any kind of anti virus software's all these years.
This software reduced most of my work of deleting the unnecessary files which are saved in my system. All the cache and unnecessary files will be deleted and my system regains its old state with every restart.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

I highly recommend the users to go for Deep Freeze instead of all other Anti virus softwares. This is an easy way of saving your system from the virus.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

. It removed the need of antivirus software.
.This freezes my system at desired attributes.
.I can save all files that are unnecessary in a particular location and freeze that location with no files using deep freeze, this will retain the location with no files.
.This reduces the time and strain on deleting the unnecessary files.

 ### 18. Excellent Product

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nidhi S. | Author, Publishing, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

While trying to install a new product from internet, unknown and unwanted tools are also installed may be of our unawareness or ignorance, so i always try to install it with Deep Freeze. Once it works as i desire, then i boot thawed. Then reinstalled... a great facility.
1. Prevents all unsafe installations.
2. Best protection from viruses
3. The best for data recovery
4. Worth a lot more than the price
5. Very handy and easy to use
6. Unique security option

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

i think i like this most and a bit difficult to find dislikes, but still i would like to mention few. we need to take care and be conscious about the frozen or thawed condition is active otherwise ....
1. Saving a file in a frozen drive and reboot. we should remember to relocate the file to an unfrozen drive, otherwise we will loose the entire file data.
2. Any driver installations may will not work if installed in frozen condition.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

i feel every PC need this now a days. As it is very easy to use and learn about what it does i suggest everyone to use it for the most safe and secured use of your PC.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Many to explain in brief but still i will put some of them.
1. My staff cannot install unwanted apps.
2. None can delete my crucial data
3. None of the file get corruputed
4. No need to do regular software maintenance
5. No antivirus required
6. Performance of the system remains the same always
7. Settings and notifications can never change by any other users

 ### 19. Great for Lab Management

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Networking | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 12, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

You can control the PCs that are used. You can wake, sleep, or even remote into them from the command console. You can also easily unfreeze and refreeze machines.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The interface feels clunky and outdated. Sometimes PCs are not reachable from the command center interface, and require hands on assistance.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

If you have labs that need to be in a certain state or have software that needs specific configurations, use this. It also acts well as an antivirus. If a PC gets infected, all you need to do is restart the PC, and you are back to the original configuration that you set.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have labs that do not need users saving anything to, and also have software configured in a certain way that shouldn't be messed with. Deep Freeze allows us to keep those labs in one state.

 ### 20. Efficient, but behind the times

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 03, 2018

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Restores On Reboot easily enough
Can be remotely managed

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Expensive
Too many costly add-ons
Many incompatibilities (Encryption, Windows Updates, etc)

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

Make sure you find out costs for features you'd otherwise expect (ie Update Management, Remote Management) as these costs can easily put Deep Freeze at three to four times the cost of competitors with similar features.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping machines clean

 ### 21. Great solution to lock down labs

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Primary/Secondary Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

I enjoy the fact that they have done several updates in the recent past to improve the functionality of the software.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

I wish the cloud service was grandfathered in with older customers, rather than an add on service.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to lock down our school labs and keep users from modifying.

 ### 22. A great service to restrict student access.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

There are some limitations regarding windows update that are slowly getting addressed.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are able to control what students put on school desktops.

 ### 23. An excellent way to completely protect computers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thomas Z. | Systems Analyst, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 20, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

When using this software you can easily create a working setup and just reboot or have the user reboot if anything is changed (including malware). After reboot you are back to the original working setup.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Due to the nature of the software it can be difficult to administer remotely.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Public computer setup, i.e. - in conference rooms, is implemented this way so that the machine does not have to be constantly reimaged. The other benefit is that one does NOT have to worry about most malware infections.

 ### 24. Another way to lock machines down

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Networking | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 27, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

The ability to have a machine revert to a fresh working state each time it is rebooted.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Need more external/scripting methods of management and integration with IT tools.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeps machines clean when unknown/guest users are using them.

 ### 25. A workhorse for years

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mark F. | Director of Customer Care - Office of Information Technology, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 12, 2017

**What do you like best about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

It locks down a computer tight and still gives us the flexibility to work properly with little intervention. It has been a trusted tool for a long time.

**What do you dislike about Faronics Deep Freeze?**

Over the years we have run into conflicts between Deep Freeze and Symantec End Point protection. Eventually it gets patched but we have run into it twice.

**Recommendations to others considering Faronics Deep Freeze:**

Go past just locking down a computer. Make sure to do maintenance windows and scheduled restarts.

**What problems is Faronics Deep Freeze solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This allows us to put a kiosk computer out to the public, but it stays locked down. After reboot it is a fresh install like it had never been touched.
