**Official Response from Damien Ponthier:**

> Hello, thank you for taking the time to review the product and provide your feedback. We are glad to hear it is supporting your architects to share knowledge about application architecture. Regarding your comments on what you dislike, CAST Imaging supports custom-built applications made of multiple layers and technologies, tens of thousands of objects, and created over the years by hundreds of developers who are no longer around to answer questions. That complexity can slow down responsiveness of teams to help in setting up the analyzers. Once done, CAST Imaging provides a unique value to architects and development teams, as you mention. CAST Management Studio (CMS) is a historical component used to analyze an application before we can visualize its architecture blueprints in CAST Imaging web-interface. We are simplifying the components of the analysis process with web-based interfaces and CMS issues will no longer exist.

  ### 21. CAST Imaging helps maximize value from portfolio and applications' analysis for modernization

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Karpagam S. | Principal Technology Architect, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 18, 2022

**What do you like best about CAST Imaging?**

CAST Imaging leverages the core data produced by the CAST Application Intelligence Platform (AIP). Its ability to support almost all technologies including most of the mainframe technologies and the trending ones like Spring Boot, Spring Batch, mobile and cloud makes it unique among all application analysis platforms. The parser is very efficient and stores metadata which can be leveraged for developing our add-ons for customized analysis.

We are redesigning and developing both the core apps on the IBM mainframe and client-facing applications, as part of a large transformation initiative. AIP with Imaging greatly helps structure this analysis and also produces an execution plan for our transformation. It seamlessly identifies interdependencies across all inter-platform components, helping us derive insights into the sequence in which applications' capabilities can be rebuilt and rewired. One of the frequently used use cases is that for each UI screen, we could gather all, directly and indirectly, related java services and mainframe stored procedures.

CAST Imaging complements it further by helping the analysts annotate and maintain the history of these processes accelerating analysis and reverse engineering. This helps new analysts' onboarding, structured knowledge retention and transition too.

**What do you dislike about CAST Imaging?**

I don't dislike any feature of CAST Imaging.

**What problems is CAST Imaging solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Application Transformation through Reverse Engineering, Portfolio analysis and process rationalization

**Reviewed Date:** July 25, 2022

**What do you like best about CAST Imaging?**

Imaging provides a large varity of views for the implemented architecture, which is so valuable for systems without documentation, or systems with documentation of processes but no technical documentation.

**What do you dislike about CAST Imaging?**

It takes quite some effort to learn to scope and set up Imaging, but CAST can support with this. After installation and scope, the system is ready to use, and has a huge knowledge base (online training, help videos etc).

**What problems is CAST Imaging solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Imaging is the google maps for software systems, so if you know a starting point, and would like to identify all transactions to and from that starting point, Imagining solves this. For a large scale application, Imaging can save you weeks of work, to understand the implemented architecture.

**Official Response from Damien Ponthier:**

> Hi Emil. Thank you for reviewing and sharing how CAST Imaging is helping you in documenting and understanding the inner-working of applications.

  ### 23. CAST Imaging - blueprints of your applications

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mark P. | Operations & Improvement Group | MMC Technology | Application Management Services (AMS), Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 14, 2022

**What do you like best about CAST Imaging?**

CAST Imaging is a compelling and innovative product from CAST. If Organization implements it and methodically trains teams in a controlled environment for daily tasks, it may have a tremendously positive effect for the particular application team and the Organization in general if used by the majority of the applications teams.
Main idea of CAST Imaging is to provide visualization blueprints for applications developed and maintained in Organization. Repository of the code, including definition of the schema of the database (not data!) should be provided for the scanning engine. Scanning results are uploaded on the CAST Imaging dedicated internal servers and transferred to the visualization GraphDB (Neo4j technology part). Visual blueprint representation is reflected on the CAST Imaging web application provided to the team members.
CAST Imaging does not change your code or database. As processing is conducted on internal servers, there is no risk of intellectual capital exposure. Both scanned code and digest of the results remain in the organization. Your repositories remain the “master records.” A new scan will bring all new and modified objects and relationships between the objects, which will reflect the recent release. As such, you will have up to date architectural blueprint of the application, being updated as the application evolves along with new releases.

**What do you dislike about CAST Imaging?**

Key to the success and maximal effect if you want to get the most from the product is control and encouraging the actual usage of CAST Imaging in Organization, starting from the very top. It implies SDLC process culture adjustments on the Organization level to integrate CAST Imaging for regular use.

**Recommendations to others considering CAST Imaging:**

Organizations with dozens or even hundreds of applications will benefit the most.
Medium-Large-Huge Applications, legacy Applications with complicated code, applications candidates for the re-write, or partial upgrades will benefit the most.

**What problems is CAST Imaging solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The application team can use it for a wide variety of purposes:
•	As permanent self-updating architecture documentation of the application.
•	Explore relationships and dependencies between different application layers and objects.
•	Teach new developers, or brush up knowledge for existing developers switching to the new application areas.
•	Analyze and predict effect and LOE for new development areas.
•	Analyze replacement of particular modules and components and identify candidates for micro-services.
•	Trace data flow from the screens to tables, identifying more efficient and optimal data management methods.
•	To search components by the name of technology types and create custom views or export inventory of the objects related to the search parameters for further analysis or discussions with the team.
•	To export visual architectural applications diagrams for sharing and discussions.
•	To predict and plan accurate regression testing when there are changed business objects or fields in the database that can affect multiple screens.
•	To plan modernization or component version upgrades, assessing the volume of work on the application level accurately.
•	Document comment or intended actions directly on the CAST Imaging screen.
•	It is even possible now to reflect found Possible Vulnerabilities on Open Source components in CAST HL and export this information to CAST Imaging to begin actual analysis for upgrade or replacement.

**Official Response from Damien Ponthier:**

> Mark, thank you for your review. We really appreciate you taking to time to share your experience and feedback. You are right, encouraging the usage of the product to get the most out of it is key:having a passionate person with an expert knowledge of CAST Imaging helps tremendously.
