## About CANopen
CANopen Magic is a versatile software tool to monitor, analyze, trace, configure, simulate and test CANopen and CANopen FD networks and devices. It contains functions for the entire lifetime of a CANopen network: from development and test to system integration and performance analysis. Use sophisticated trace filtering and node access to monitor, analyze and test all aspects of your network. Simulate nodes that are still under development.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

CANopen integrated services for network management (NMT), publish-subscribe model  using PDO, and client-server model using SDO for large data transfers and runtime configuration

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

Difficult to estimate latency and jitter for data transfers between the nodes. if there are hard real-time constraints, synchronous PDO transfers shall be used

**Recommendations to others considering CANopen:**

It would help if you also considered EtherCAT depending on the requirements of your network. Please pay special attention to CANopen implementation you plan to use since it could include faults, provide reduced functionality, or have limiting constraints.

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CANopen provides solutions for deterministic control networks and networks for control and telemetry data exchange. CANopen advantages include communication compatibility and interoperability, ease in network configuration and management, and massive support for HW devices, controllers, and SW applications.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

SDO, PDO and very clear objects classification

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

Sometimes there are too many objects and certain designers abuse it by adding too many custom objects.

**Recommendations to others considering CANopen:**

It is highly recommended because of simplicity , network topologies and compact deployments.

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The CANOpen is helping to model APIS for end applications. Like valve control and configuration is being done in top of CANOPEN with ease.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

Openness and possibility of applying for many industries for data communications

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

CANopen is not scalabe with respect to other bus communication technologies. Physical layer can be made intact.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

The flexibility it brings compares to other industrial protocols like Profibus or Profinet, and the excellent communication structure (SDOs, PDOs, etc..)

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

Perhaps for someone that hasn't been in touch before with a CANOpen the learning curve might be a little tricky (but for the rest, the benefits outweigh the problems).

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are designing a new machine using two stepper motors (that are controlled via CANOpen protocol). The possibility to set a specific set of registers that the steppers can be reportings in case of changes (e.g., Temperature of the Motor, torque, etc...)

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

You can set priorities By the arbitration.

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

The speed is low and that limits the range of the application.

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I did networks between motors and sensors. A Linux machine was the master and sent commands to them. The communication was very stable and I was able to set priorities with the most critical devices to have the highest. This way, I built a trustworthy communication for my machine.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

Multi Master functionality is most useful function of CanOpen

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

Maximum number of Application data that can be sent in single frame

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used Canopen for wind energy application. Here master has good control over its slaves and due to multimaster functionality any slave can feed emergency data to master any time.

**What do you like best about CANopen?**

I like how you can view the status of multiple devices on the single interface. I also like how you can configure nodes from your laptop.

**What do you dislike about CANopen?**

Difficult to get understand the canopen magic interface. Takes some time getting use to. Not very intuitive.

**What problems is CANopen solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am configuring CAN devices for a mining machine.

communication validation at hardware level, possibility to connect multiple devices to one data bus

need to program any type of message into the device

If you are familiar with other protocols based on CAN, I recommend you start with CANopen

retrieval of data from critical equipment at specified times.

Integrity of packet for corresponding destination, collision free communication

There is nothing to dislike about CANopen

I have implemented CANopen for communication between multiple nodes of ECU in our embedded Linux projects. It is completely finite state machine based protocol which helped me to solve multiple issues in our project.
