I don't think the use / development is well documented. I think I fault IBM' for the obscurity / lack of documentation in Tririga Form reporting with BIRT. **What problems is BIRT solving and how is that benefiting you?** It provides a good interface to IBM Tririga (facilities management) software. It is a strong enough tool to do much of the reporting required. ### 3. Also, getting a report set up properly can be challenging. It does require a bit of an understanding of database structure and how the TeleStaff database is specifically set up. **Recommendations to others considering BIRT:** BIRT is a great product once you get it installed. Unfortunately, UKG does not provide a lot of support since it's a 3rd party software. Once you conquer that hurdle and understand the database structure, BIRT is great for customizing frequently used reports as well as pulling custom data out of TeleStaff. **What problems is BIRT solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have the ability to export information not available by default in TeleStaff (such as notes attached to records). It also allows me to customize certain reports and save a template of them for easier use. ### 4. There are many features that make BIRT a powerful platform and highly popular among other BI & Reporting players, for example, Multi-pass aggregates, Templates, Flexible Charting wizards, XML as Data sources, and Libraries. With the latest BIRT 2.0, it now supports CSV output, HTML pagination & Table of Contents. **What do you dislike about BIRT?** The UI is still traditional and surely demands a revamp to enhance the User Experience, as the product should be a fit in all angles, performance, experience, features, robust & scalable, security, and ease-of-use. Apart from the UI part, I don't find anything else which needs to be optimized or changed as of now. But there is a scope of improvement always. **Recommendations to others considering BIRT:** Do get your hands dipped and dirty with BIRT, then you would love to play with it every day. **What problems is BIRT solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have been creating very deep and complex Data Visualizations for Business Users, Sales Team & Project Managers, which have made the entire process very transparent and are now more accountable. A good visualization helps you to identify trends, patterns & anomalies in the data. So that you can improve where your process lacks, and optimize even more to get even better results, which we are able to achieve with BIRT. ### 5. It can connect to all different types of datasets, you can configure your queries to control how your report is displayed, and you can design many different kinds of reports/documents from Charts to Letters! **What do you dislike about BIRT?** The software is pretty heavy, Java-based, and not as lightweight as some other open source tools such as iReports. **Recommendations to others considering BIRT:** Great Tool if you are on a budget. **What problems is BIRT solving and how is that benefiting you?** I used BIRT to create Inventory Reports for a system designed to keep track of internal computer inventory. Thus I created reports to display how many items were at a particular location, how much of a particular item was in-house and who it was assigned to, as well as, designing approval letters. Thus it was mostly Tabular reports and letters. ### 6. Free. But more than that, I like the functionality. I like that it is a full-featured reporting tool with an amazing charting engine. After testing several other tools, this one is the simplest to use. It has an eclipse-based designer tool that can be used to not only design reports, but to run them as they would run in production. It also has a server that is easily installed onto Apache Tomcat or other java servlet container. I like that I do not have to pay double for both production and test environments. I like that I can have as many instances as I want and I wont go broke! It has libraries to centralize things like database connection so they are defined once and used on many reports. It can take data from more sources than I have ever seen before, including web services and Java POJO classes (and I have used them!). **What do you dislike about BIRT?** I am admittedly nervous that development has slowed on the project, but not so nervous that I would worry. It is open source, after all, so the code will always be available, and I have never really needed any commercial support or services to run it! Even with the recent lack of development, it is head and shoulders better than any other open-source tool I have used. Another thing I found to be puzzling initially was that It is a bit too easy to 'break' the report through changing queries and report item naming, but as I got to know the tool I learned how to fix or avoid all of those issues quite easily. **What problems is BIRT solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am deploying reports to places that would otherwise not have the budget to run these kinds of reports. We can easily stand up a remote server with a BIRT container (docker/podman) on it and provide reporting without a lot of fuss. I am also able to export to PowerPoint (or similar) for upper-level and board meetings, which saves hours of work that would otherwise be spent doing pain-staking copy, crop, paste, and format. (Use the PPTX export option, not the one labeled PowerPoint) I have not found another tool that exports to PowerPoint so nicely. ### 7.
