## Berkeley DB 12c Reviews
  ### 1. A mediocre NoSQL database.

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian A. | Application Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2020

**What do you like best about Berkeley DB 12c?**

Once you're setup you can create tables kind of quickly. There really isn't much else to like about it at all. I do not believe this database was a huge benefit to our team.

**What do you dislike about Berkeley DB 12c?**

Seems like its missing a lot of the features that other NoSQL databases have. The API is confusing and the documentation is terrible. Due to literally nobody using it, if you have any issues, it's hard to find help on stack overflow if you have any issues. I can't think of any situation I would ever use this database over other databases. Part of this was due to us using a NoSQL database instead of a SQL database since our data was very structured and a NoSQL database was ill suited for our task. A SQL database would have been much preferable to using NoSQL. I personally would have liked to have used Postgres since it is the best SQL database in my opinion. Did I mention it was really really expensive? It was way too expensive and for what little value it brought to us it should really be alot cheaper. I think we were just using it because we had already started with it.

**Recommendations to others considering Berkeley DB 12c:**

I would not try a different SQL database.

**What problems is Berkeley DB 12c solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We were using it to create a human resources system. You could create tables quickly was the other real benefit. Not as quickly and easily as other NoSQL databases, of course, only more quickly than an SQL database.

  ### 2. A rare gem

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 03, 2020

**What do you like best about Berkeley DB 12c?**

Our team used Berkeley DB Java Edition in the past for a highly scalable middleware product. The product quality was outstanding. The team left largely intact after the Oracle acquisition provided phenomenal support. The user forum is also very active and often we could get a response on the forums from architects on the team.

**What do you dislike about Berkeley DB 12c?**

Occasionally we ran into some regressions. At times, the database format changes requires some extra cycles to work around in our application.

**Recommendations to others considering Berkeley DB 12c:**

Familiarize yourself with the documentation and APIs first to get a good grasp on how easy it is for developers to use this database
Keep up with new releases and schedule time to make version changes to reduce the risk of regressions introduced by the library
Look out for changes to the database format and decide how your application should handle migrating existing databases to the new format. Consider allowing your users to revert to a previous version or format if necessary

**What problems is Berkeley DB 12c solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Highly-scalable key-value store that is heavily weighted for reads and mostly cached in memory.

  ### 3. Painless experience with a great document-based DB

Maybe isn’t that well known as other nonSQL Berkeley DB when it’s features sometimes exceeds other more popular DB managers

**Recommendations to others considering Berkeley DB 12c:**

Very suitable to integrate in dynamic environments and to store volatile data. Also one of the best approaches for mobile data storage

**What problems is Berkeley DB 12c solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I’ve used Berkeley DB mainly as secondary DB to storage settings for app and user profiles. Also big use in mobile environments
