## About Azure Application Gateway
Azure Application Gateway is a web traffic load balancer that enables you to manage traffic to your web applications. Unlike traditional load balancers that operate at the transport layer (Layer 4), Application Gateway operates at the application layer (Layer 7), allowing it to make routing decisions based on attributes such as URL paths and host headers. This capability provides more control over how traffic is distributed to your applications, enhancing both performance and security. Key Features and Functionality: - Layer 7 Load Balancing: Routes traffic based on HTTP request attributes, enabling more precise control over traffic distribution. - Web Application Firewall (WAF): Protects applications from common web vulnerabilities like SQL injection and cross-site scripting by monitoring and filtering HTTP requests. - SSL/TLS Termination: Offloads SSL/TLS processing to the gateway, reducing the encryption and decryption overhead on backend servers. - Autoscaling: Automatically adjusts the number of gateway instances based on traffic load, ensuring optimal performance and cost efficiency. - Zone Redundancy: Distributes instances across multiple availability zones, enhancing resilience and availability. - URL Path-Based Routing: Directs requests to backend pools based on URL paths, allowing for efficient resource utilization. - Host Header-Based Routing: Routes traffic to different backend pools based on the host header, facilitating multi-site hosting. - Integration with Azure Services: Seamlessly integrates with Azure Traffic Manager for global load balancing and Azure Monitor for centralized monitoring and alerting. Primary Value and User Solutions: Azure Application Gateway provides a scalable and highly available solution for managing web application traffic. By operating at the application layer, it offers intelligent routing capabilities that enhance application performance and reliability. The integrated Web Application Firewall ensures robust security against common web threats, while features like SSL/TLS termination and autoscaling optimize resource utilization and reduce operational overhead. This comprehensive set of features addresses the needs of organizations seeking to build secure, scalable, and efficient web front ends in Azure.

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

In general, it is an excellent way to manage all your servers in the cloud, and it is fast and quite reliable, you avoid common failures in physical servers, in the same way, it is easy to group by projects and to give permissions as well as to deny them.
Additionally, it offers several ways to manage our projects, such as creating disks, private networks, virtual machines according to the capacity we need.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

It is difficult to find faults I consider that the least pleasant thing is the cost issue in some things the prices are a little excessive however they manage to compensate some of this with the reservation issue if you need to have machines for example for more than a specific time.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

It is important before starting to get advice and shield yourself in every way as to whether your project or company requires it, as well as to make a detailed analysis of all the costs that your migration or implementation will entail and in this way evaluate if it is necessary to make reservations. which in my opinion is an excellent option to minimize expenses.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At the moment, we are working on the migration of some physical servers to the cloud, this to minimize impacts on physical servers and migrate everything to the cloud, all benefits in theory the datacenter that we have physical will disappear to avoid many problems this Migration has been of great help to the company.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ajit Kumar k. | AWS Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

Azure Application Gateway(AGW) is a helpful tool for web traffic managers & it works similarly like AWS Application gateway wherein we can make routing decisions based on URI or host headers. e.g we can route traffic based on the incoming URL. If /images or /Videos are in the URL, we can route to the specific set of servers configured for Images or Videos. It can also be used for SSL/TLS temination as well. In some cases unencrypted communication to the servers is not acceptable because of security standards/compliance etc, In those scenarios AFW is helpful for end-to-end TLS/SSL encryption.

  ### 15. Best in class experience and Great and powerful cloud platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vijay K. | Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

Azure provides end to end life cycle. Starting from the development to automated deployment, you will find [a] bunch of options. Custom hook-points allow [integration] on-premise resources as well. Excellent documentation around all the services make it easy for any novice. Overall support by [the] community and Azure Technical team is exceptional.BOT Services, Computer Vision services, ML frameworks provide excellent results compared to similar services offered by other giants in the same space. Azure data services provide excellent support to ingest data from different sources, ETL, and data consumption for BI purposes.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

The reliability of hardware is low as [compared] to AWS. Sometimes processes of allocation, deallocation of resources take quite a long time without having any intimation. If the instances are costly, such delay in stopping incurs extra cost. The overall cost is much higher for ML and BI Services. Essential storage and compute cost is also a bit more as compared to AWS. Azure can surely do better with overall DevOps support. Cloud formation needs a lot more maturity and features.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Microsoft Azure for cognitive services like natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning for built-in open-[source] frameworks like Tensorflow, MXNet, Keras, etc. It is used based on customers' needs, as we are in the service industry. It helps with scaling, security, and reliability.

-custom error pages

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

User interfaces needs to be improved.Does not have flexibility to used public IPs

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

Application gateway is quite helpful for fadt routing and exact routing in your particular tag mentioned in URI. Efficient load balancing .

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can route to specific header or page directly rather than just a source ip routing. Extra headers in URI can leads to specific routing.

  ### 17. Data engineer

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Alternative Dispute Resolution | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 13, 2022

  ### 18. Azure Application Gateway - A good option but needs refinement

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eusuf K. | Software Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 08, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

The gateway works as expected once appropriately configured. The tool is a native of the Azure platform so works well with other services and no issues were encountered while configuration or after deployment. Another benefit is that you can automate its deployment once you know the entire configuration.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

The documentation is a little bit incomplete and confusing. The terminologies are also somewhat confusing for complete newbies. The major drawback is that you require all the information beforehand before configuring the Gateway otherwise you'll have to go round and round configuring it again and again. The automated deployment template gives off some issues and needs fixing sometimes. Also, the deployment time is also quite long and needs some improvement. The gateway documentation is complete but very tedious to browse through. This could be improved as this causes delays when we need to quickly deploy something and some error is encountered.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

Since this is the only native option offered, we are stuck using it but read the documentation thoroughly first, and then it will be less cumbersome. The Azure Application Gateway is quite powerful but needs some work which I have no doubt the Microsoft Azure team is already taking care of so hopefully, it will be easier to use in the future.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We deploy multiple workloads using the application gateway and host a SaaS application on Azure which incorporates the Azure Application Gateway in its pipeline. The main benefit is that it is a native service, so it integrates well with other components, and once you get familiarized with the tool, it is pretty simple to configure and use if you have all the required details handy. The deployment has the added benefit of being automated and this can benefit multiple workloads which needs to be deployed. The gateway documentation is complete but very tedious to browse through.

  ### 19. Microsoft Azure Application Gateway as Software as a Service

**Reviewed Date:** April 05, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

Traffic management, autoscaling, and security features that we like most of all.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

There are integrating opportunities with other vendors' software and difficult realization.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

If you want your WEB service to be more secure, app-level routing, scalable and load-balanced, use Azure Application gateway.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In my working sphere, we solve local projects and tasks, also support other integrated projects.

  ### 20. Load balancing is the foundation of cloud-nativity

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Janne M. | Technical Product Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 22, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

The best things in Azure Application Gateway is the way it autoscales to the needed load. Cloud is supposed to be exactly about this; automatically scaling resources for the demand. Azure does this probably best in the market.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

Different application gateway Tiers can be confusing, as they represent something only existing in Azure world.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

It makes zero sense to build load balancing on your own, when you can have Azure Application Gateway doing this on behalf of you. The cost of 30 dollars a month easily is paid back by removal of all the worries about stability and scaling of the solution.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

To have a business application that can scale for public use from all the way from zero use (0 instances load balanced) up to a very large number of serving instances. Normal maximum for our deployments has been 10 instances.

  ### 21. Works best for WAF requirement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Puskal S. | Cloud Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 08, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

WAF is integrated with Application gateway whereas there are other third party products available and thus increase overall cost.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

Type and Version is sometimes create confusion such as V1 and V2 cannot be cleared described in the portal to confirm which version of App gateway are we using.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

If you have basic requirement of WAF and using any third party products then you can replace with App gateway.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Earlier we were using Barracuda WAF which is having BYOL and thus adding more cost to our solution, after using App gateway we reduced our cost and it fits to our basic WAF requirement.

  ### 22. Azure App Gateway

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** KASTURIKA B. | DevOps Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

The best part I liked about it was the routing of an HTTP request based on the URI, which made it easier for me to make routing calls to different APIs.
One more thing that I liked about it was the more straightforward integration with other endpoints.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

The things I disliked about app gateway were I felt the price was on a higher side, there should be more data packet filtering options available on the app gateway level.
Logging needs to be more refined for the app gateway.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basically we are using Azure Application Gateway for solving our routing problems with different URIs.

  ### 23. Challenges faced while using Azure Application Gateways

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 31, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

re-uploading root certificate to an existing Application Gateway doesn't undergo any downtime, and hence the best part, in my view

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

1) Moving your Application Gateway from SKU tier standard to SKU tier standard_v2 or vice versa needs downtime as Azure won't allow you to do this if the subnet used for both are the same.
2) If using Application Gateway (SKU tier standard_v2), it becomes mandatory to use a static Private IP, and I can't create the Private IP's dynamically using terraform
3) If using Application Gateway (SKU tier standard_v2), it becomes mandatory to use a Public IP even if I do not want to use the same and want to communicate to the other application internally via Private IP.
Public IP sits without any listener associated with it.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

using Azure Application Gateway as the load balancer for all our microservices

  ### 24. It's still in testing mode. I used it because I need to have a load-balancer over VM scale sets.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Abbas H. | DevOps Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 18, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

It's good to use for load balancing, and you will get rid of your webserver. I also liked the logs monitoring and the metrics collected. The redirection of http to https is easy to be applied. It has also many features like TLS/SSL termination, routing decisions based on URI path, and WAF.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

It was all great except for Websockets. The WebSocket was not returning data, but the application established the connection. I was unable to discover why.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

If you are working with WebSockets, make sure that it's working fine.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have a spring boot application that has an embedded tomcat server. The application is exposed through a public URL by Nginx. I tried to remove this layer (Nginx) of proxying to have a more reliable connection from external clients accessing my application.
I need to deploy VM scale sets, so I decided to use the Azure GW to route traffic between servers.

  ### 25. We use Azure Application Gateway to Secure Access to our Production Environment

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dima K. | System Administrator and DevOps Engineer , Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

Provides load balancing for the Layer 7 traffic

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

The configuration is very specific right now and needs to be much more flexible.

**Recommendations to others considering Azure Application Gateway:**

My advice is to consider using the application gateway if you have a need to secure your application.

**What problems is Azure Application Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The solution is easy to set up and doesn't require maintenance. Provides WAF, load balancing and routing rules

  ### 26. Azure Load balancer

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Prasanna K. | Developer and Site Contributor, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2021

**What do you like best about Azure Application Gateway?**

It really helps us to manage incoming traffic and evenly distribute the traffics. Also, the configuration is simple to understand.

**What do you dislike about Azure Application Gateway?**

I really dont think, there is much of disadvantages. but, if the interface can help us to demonstrate how things logically happens may be in gif or small video instead of just a static image, it will be really helpful for everyone.
