If comparing it with other API management platforms they are offering varieties of capabilities, tools, features and options but then they are lacking the ease of interface. Various azure integrations are provided in it but it should provide integration with other external services. It also needs improvements in their on-premises services. It is providing several policies and usage regarding APIs. Multilayered protection for APIs is provided in it. It provides proper insights and visualization for APIs. It provides excellent links for API communication, modernizes the standard of delivery and monitoring of queries and resources to use, I love having all the connections and data in one platform and connect to the back-end from wherever and the best everything is protected from end to end to ensure your integration. First evaluated when we tried to break the applications into functional pieces and micro pieces by introducing microservices and developing RESTful APIs. Once we started developing RESTful APIs, we were in need of test those APIs, educate developers about the models, publishing catalogs, authenticating and authorizing users for API usage, expose some of the APIs externally available in a central place. Tried AWS API gateway, swagger and few others and end up with using Azure API management because of below reasons: 1. Existing relationship with Microsoft Azure 2. Heavy use of DocumentDB 3. Very cost effective 4. Extensive monitoring & logging capabilities 5. Helpful Admin & Developer portals 6. Easy AD integration 7. Multi-region deployment 10. HA and fault tolerance If you campare with AWS API Gateway, it is not the best but good enough for my need. Azure API management is essentially PaaS. You need to move your all controls to internet/cloud. It took long time for our information security and legal to work on to come to an agreement. Long frustrating wait time. Azure API management does not provide a way to generate SDK. You need to copy sample code from developers portal and use. Recommendations to others considering Azure API Management: Compared to other two similar API management tools in market, Azure API management is not the best but emerging and can be good enough for your need. I am fully satisfied with Azure API management capabilities and recommend others to use it. Reasons? 1. Cost effective solution 2. If you already in Azure Cloud environment, this is just matter of few hours to start, up and running 3. Provide fine grained access 4. Effective monitoring and logging capabilities 5. We broke our giant functionalities into fine grained microservices which need development of RESTful APIs. As we moved more and more towards the goal, we were in need of a central place for APIs catalog, model definition, testing, authenticating and authorizing us of APIs and externally expose APIs safely.
