I guess this is a pretty regular case when you don't fully migrate to cloud infraestructure. I played around with File and Volume gateway and eventually went with file gateway as per my project requirements. Connecting the gateway to AD and mapping it to server/PC is really simple. I have implemented this solution instead to use on prem storage services. On the top, it's cheaper than other solutions. **What do you dislike about AWS Storage Gateway?** EC2 host as gateway is not fully developed and definitely not easy to implement. I used Vmware Esxi as a solution and that worked out great. but i tried with ec2 first and that wasn't working with public ip. We used a Stored Volume gateway in order to retain data local for quick access, and adding the VM into our VMware enviornment was quick and easy. **What do you dislike about AWS Storage Gateway?** Increasing the size of Stored Volumes was a bit of a pain. Typically you had to restore from a previous snapshot onto a larger disk on your VM. On large volumes in environments with slow internet connections, this will result in long periods of exposure where you are not getting snapshots of your data for backup retention. **Recommendations to others considering AWS Storage Gateway:** I would recommend carefully sizing your volumes with the AWS Storage Gateway, especially if you plan to use Stored Volumes. Increasing the size of these types of volumes leaves you exposed for a minimum of a period of a few hours to potentially a few days, depending on your environment. **What problems is AWS Storage Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?** Before implementing the AWS Storage Gateway, we were not backing up data off-site. Usually, it is not a hard thing to do, most of the times you already are set with what you use for your teams storage, but it's nice that it connects with the other parts AWS has to offer, so there is less confusion there. **What do you dislike about AWS Storage Gateway?** I wish the documentation and help to learn this was a bit better. They have decent documentation on how to get things started and working, but of course they always think in the way of a perfect world where things work and don't go wrong. I often find myself looking online from other websites like Stack Overflow, in order to find a way to get things working. Great for very basic file ingestion to S3 and Glacier. We continue to use the SMB gateway to write from legacy applications and ingest the data sets to S3. **What do you dislike about AWS Storage Gateway?** We've had problems with performance on Virtual Tape Gateways, NFS Gateways and SMB Gateways. The gateway has no problem keeping up with uploading objects to Glacier and S3. However, virtual tapes had issues retrieving data virtual tapes - we were only able to restore 1 file at a time when attempting batch restores. SMB & NFS gateways were able to upload to S3 as fast as we could send data, but failed to flush the buffer - resulting in failed writes. **Recommendations to others considering AWS Storage Gateway:** 1. Ensure that you're meeting the sizing recommendations for the virtual appliances. 2. Be aware of your data sets sizes - we needed to churn the maximum cache size every 8 hours. The appliance was unable to do handle this level of ingestion. 3. If you're doing a 1-time ingest from legacy storage, check out the aws cli s3 sync tool (for small datasets) or rclone (for large or complex datasets). **What problems is AWS Storage Gateway solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used the Virtual Tape Gateways with our backup product.
