"AWS AppSync Makes Scalable GraphQL APIs Fast with Powerful Multi-Source Integration"
4/5
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

AWS AppSync greatly simplifies building scalable GraphQL APIs by handling query execution, real-time subscriptions, offline synchronization, and data source integration, without requiring developers to build and maintain custom GraphQL servers. I especially appreciate its support for multiple backend sources within a single API, which lets applications pull data from Lambda, DynamoDB, Aurora, OpenSearch, and HTTP endpoints through a single, unified set of GraphQL queries.

The console includes a clean schema editor, resolver management, and query testing tools, so onboarding feels relatively straightforward. Performance is excellent as well, since AppSync resolves only the fields requested by clients, which helps reduce unnecessary network traffic. Although AppSync itself isn’t an AI platform, it can integrate smoothly with Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker via Lambda resolvers, making it possible to expose AI capabilities through GraphQL APIs. What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

Resolver mapping templates, especially Apache Velocity Template Language (VTL), have a learning curve and can be difficult to debug for complex business logic. Although JavaScript resolvers have improved the developer experience, maintaining large GraphQL schemas still requires careful planning. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Managed GraphQL, but a Steep AWS Learning Curve"
2.5/5
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

Managed GraphQL service: You get a fully managed GraphQL layer with less backend boilerplate, so you can focus more on the client and schema than infrastructure. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

Steep learning curve: You often need to understand GraphQL plus several AWS services (Cognito, DynamoDB, Lambda, etc.), which many see as overkill for smaller teams or projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"AppSync vs AWS API Gateway"
4/5
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

AppSync is the best service and feature provided by AWS. As this is GraphQL, there is more that AWS delivers in AppSync. The subscription feature lets the cloud/server connect and send information to users that are connected. AppSync connects you to DynamoDB directly without using Lambda, which also reduces billing. What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

AWS AppSync has a bug that our organization encountered 4 days ago. It may be a bug that requires fixing. As AWS AppSync recently announced custom authorization that allows custom implementation using Lambda. It also allows selecting specific authorization on priority. But it did not work with custom authorization as done using the following steps:

1. Custom authentication

2. API Cognito Pool

3. API key

In GraphQL we have schema e.g.

type Query @aws_cognito_user_pools {

getSites: genericResponse

getToken: genericResponse

}

type genericResponse {

statusCode: Int!

body: String!

}

Following query executed with token generated through cognito_pool and uses aws_cognito_user_pools authentication and it does not work and throws 401 error. This issue requires fixing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Brings the comfort of GraphQL development"
5/5
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

I like how AppSync helps decompose big building blocks into smaller primitives and removes my need of having a GraphQL server up and running. I can also link a DynamoDB table as a data source directly, without having to write custom resolvers, which is nice. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

The lack of a centralised data access layer is my single biggest issue about using generic index attributes in my data model while using AppSync. The frontend for AppSync is a clunky mess and makes the development process harder. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
