Deployment for our application was quite streamlined. We use Aptible for our production deployments as well as our staging environment. Integration with the various external API services is seamless. Once the servers are configured and running, deployment of application upgrades happen without any discernible downtime. We could spin up additional servers and resources whenever we needed to and reduce them when we did not require them anymore. Support has been responsive and would resolve issues quickly. We could also do most of the tasks with the self-help tools provided, including learning from the documents available. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** Sometimes it would be a bit slower in the support queues when some major incident would occur. Perhaps some extra templates to help with logging might help us. But generally, very little to dislike. **What problems is Aptible solving and how is that benefiting you?** Aptible provides us with the platform to provide secure teleheath and pharmacy services without needing a team to maintain the underlying servers and platorm. ### 2. If you work in healthcare, this is such a good starting point. When getting your HIPAA compliance, oh- look -- all the documentation is done for you. Oh and you want a database? So straightforward to set up. Oh and HTTPS and managing certs? a thing of the past. Just point your DNS and their proxy takes care of the rest. In short, if you're trying to bring SaaS to healthcare, I can't think of a better place to get started. P.S. You get real human, expert support. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** Doesn't support FedRAMP and custom hardware configurations; eventually your company may grow faster than the Aptible feature set. That's okay -- getting started is the hard part. While functional equivalence among more mature competitors (e.g., AWS), Aptible truly shines in the choice of user-facing abstraction and simplicity. For my trial of the platform, I deployed a sample rails application. During the trial, I was able to appreciate the workflow for deployment that the Aptible team is proposing and it is now a strong contender among the current giants in the industry (in my opinion!) **What do you dislike about Aptible?** I can't pinpoint any specific aspect of the platform that I did not like. However, I think what would make the Web UI better would be more on-hover tooltips to provide the user insight into the various fields/options. **What problems is Aptible solving and how is that benefiting you?** A common pain point I am dealing with is the lack of proper CI/CD infrastructure. A lot of the difficulties can be attributed to the nature of large platforms such as GitLab which are a "jack of all trades" solution. By placing a heavy emphasis on deployment, Aptible streamlines both the CI and CD of applications with very little setup costs. ### 5. These processes can be long and painful, but Aptible makes them seem like nothing! While it hides away abstraction, by keeping the user informed at stages, it allows the user to look up what exactly Aptible is doing in the background. A tool I definitely see myself using for personal and work-related projects. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** Not a downside specifically, but I was unsure about large-scale feature discovery. If we were to move from an IaaS (e.g. GCP, AWS) to here, what features would be missing, if any? Hiding away abstraction is a tradeoff for these corner cases, where it's unclear whether certain features lurk below the surface or don't exist at all, which could make specific migrations infeasible. **What problems is Aptible solving and how is that benefiting you?** Getting my application out in the world in the most hassle-free way, so that I can focus on the product and less on these logistics. ### 6. I got started with aptible about a year ago, and at this point I use it almost every day. Deploying updates to our apps is always super easy and fast. The number of steps normally required to do this are integrated in Aptible and the pain points are removed. With security built in, much of the stress around a public facing endpoint is alleviated. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** Nothing in particular though I did find that the directions on the dashboard were sufficient enough to disregard the quickstart guide. It uses some databases and has a caching layer. I have a few services that go along with it. Oh, right, and it needs to be secure and HIPAA compliant and all of those things. So... we deploy it via Aptible. And it works, and it is backed up, and Aptible helps us meet a lot of the security things we need. It just works. Support is great. They make steady progress on features and listen to customer needs. As for the title, when I'm explaining to (technical) people what Aptible is, I use the phrase, "like Heroku, but with all the security stuff." That explanation *normally* works. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** The one thing that I keep pushing on Aptible is better auto-scaling. They do have some upcoming solutions that help address my underlying needs, which is good, but it is the one (big) feature which I'd like to see improved. **Recommendations to others considering Aptible:** I'm a fan. It solves a real need and helps me sleep at night. **What problems is Aptible solving and how is that benefiting you?** As mentioned above, we have certain compliance requirements, HIPAA in particular. Practically no wrong buttons to click. And as I understand it, they helped provide some of the more standard materials that our organization used in the final training courses that we administered on there. They have a hosting platform among their offerings, but I didn't use this part. While I had to Dockerize our application in order to transition to Aptible, I received generous, competent help from the support team that made the transition possible. And this was before we'd even signed a contract for the service (since clearly we had to see if it was going to work before we committed.) **What do you dislike about Aptible?** We had one incident early on where they incorrectly reported our usage and caused me to panic that I'd spent all this money... that was no fun. **Recommendations to others considering Aptible:** If you need HIPAA compliance and don't want to roll your own, Aptible is wonderful. Nice UI to setup components and environments which eliminates the complexity of setting up and managing AWS directly. Allows me to worry about the code instead of the underlying deployment infrastructure. The support staff has been great at responding to incidents and proactively taking measures to ensure our application remains available. The CLi tools are well documented when these operations are required (setting configuration, database tunneling, manual deployments). Having it based on git deployments helps with our existing workflow and inherently provides another remote backup location in case of disaster recovery. Docker has been equally nice to have in that each application components only needs what it needs to operate leaving much less on the server to worry about in terms of vulnerabilities (that we had with our dedicated server). These containers have proven to be very fast and their zero-downtime deployments are critical to our continuous integration process. **What do you dislike about Aptible?** Getting started with Docker was a little tough, they do not provide much support on setting up the actual Docker & Proc files based on your requirements, but as time has gone on, its become easier and I've gotten good support on setting up additional modules. **Recommendations to others considering Aptible:** Great for smaller startups who need HIPAA-compliancy and a scalable cloud-based infrastructure but do not have the resources internally to maintain people on staff. If you are looking at running containers but don't know exactly how the orchestration works, this is a better, easier alternative than Heroku **What problems is Aptible solving and how is that benefiting you?** Scalability. We went from a dedicated server to a multi-component HIPAA-compliant infrastructure.
