When you are not familiar with AWS and its services already, it can be really confusing to set up. **Recommendations to others considering Amazon Route 53:** If your team is already using AWS, this is a great tool to help you manage URLs. One great thing about it is that you can group URL alias into hosted zones in Route 53, so when you are adding HTTPS certs, you don't need to know where the services/sites are hosted. It is an easy tool to use with great integration to AWS services. It doesn't require a great deal of technical knowleged to use. The introduction of Alias records seems to solve the problem of not being able to have a CNAME as an origin record. It can be used to load balance between regions and can be updated via code. This is especially nice with things like cloudwatch events. **What do you dislike about Amazon Route 53?** It would be nice to be able to upload / convert existing bind files to use a a starting point or a template. Beyond that I haven't ran into any roadblocks. **Recommendations to others considering Amazon Route 53:** Make sure that you know how to use it for load balancing between regions. Be aware of the existence and use for Alias records -- especially with load balancers. Use Cloudtrails / Cloudwatch to monitor your DNS events. **What problems is Amazon Route 53 solving and how is that benefiting you?** Secure management of DNS without maintaining Bind. We don't have to maintain or secure a bind server. It is also highly available. It is easier to configure than Bind. We don;'t have to do as much training for users to use it. Amazon provides API connectivity as well, allowing me to automate the process. After automation, we can use our continuous integration deployment software to automatically update all settings in Route53 quickly. **What do you dislike about Amazon Route 53?** We have some domains that have hundreds of subdomains, and sometimes searching for a specific subdomain to adjust it can be quite slow. Additionally, the documentation for the API is quite sparse, sometimes outdated, or slightly confusing. **Recommendations to others considering Amazon Route 53:** Route53 is a great solution for any business looking to solve all of their dns problems in one location.
