Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) Reviews & Product Details

Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) is a scalable, high-performance block storage service designed for use with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances. It enables users to create storage volumes that can be attached to EC2 instances, allowing for the creation of file systems, running databases, or other block storage applications. EBS volumes are automatically replicated within their specific Availability Zone to protect against component failures, ensuring high availability and durability. Key Features and Functionality: - Multiple Volume Types: EBS offers various volume types to optimize performance and cost, including SSD-backed storage for transactional workloads and HDD-backed storage for throughput-intensive tasks. - Scalability: Users can dynamically adjust capacity and performance specifications of EBS volumes without downtime, accommodating changing application needs. - Backup and Recovery: EBS provides snapshot capabilities, allowing for point-in-time backups of volumes. These snapshots can be used to restore data or migrate it across different AWS accounts, regions, or availability zones. - Data Encryption: EBS supports encryption to secure data at rest and in transit, utilizing AWS Key Management Service (KMS) for cryptographic key management. - High Availability and Durability: EBS volumes are designed for 99.999% availability, with automatic replication within an Availability Zone to prevent data loss due to hardware failures. Primary Value and User Solutions: Amazon EBS addresses the need for reliable, high-performance, and scalable block storage in the cloud. It enables businesses to run mission-critical applications, such as databases and enterprise applications, with confidence in data availability and durability. The service's flexibility allows users to optimize storage performance and cost according to their specific workload requirements, while features like snapshots and encryption enhance data protection and compliance. By integrating seamlessly with EC2 instances, EBS simplifies storage management, allowing users to focus on their core applications without the complexities of traditional storage solutions.

"Works reliably and as needed"

5/5

What do you like best about Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)?

They're easily deployable, attachable, configurable, scalable, movable, and reliable. My organization doesn't do anything fancy with them but we've had no issues related to EBS failures. The option to encrypt (along with the management features for encryption KMS) is convenient for our security-minded organization. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)?

Not elastic. Unsure if there is an easier way to operate via OS level or whatnot, but it would be nice to be able to scale down snapshots and AMIs to the minimum amount of space required rather than the native EBS size of the snapshot/AMI created. Otherwise, nothing else is wrong. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS):

If you have no extreme requirements and simply require an easy-to-use, straight-forward solution for direct-attached storage for EC2 instances, EBS should be an appropriate solution for your business. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) solving and how is that benefiting you?

They're the most efficient, straight-forward, and reliable solution for our direct storage solutions. We can move them around as needed, back up, restore, reconfigure, and scale. Our organization is still new to AWS but EBS has been an easy-to-learn feature in partnership with EC2 instances. We require decently-sized volumes for critical data.
