"20 Years with Allplan"

What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

1) Its flexibility: from very quick architectural design to construction modelling, from buildings to detailed joinery, from new buildings to historical ones.

2) The way information is organised: the "building structure" is one of the smartest feature to manage BIM

3) Interface with spreadsheet: we've developed a system to estimate the cost of the building, progress of work, etc, linking the model with third party pricing book (e.g. RICS).

4) Its scalability: allows to be very efficient as one-man-band or working as a team

I start using Allplan after graduating and I never stopped. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ALLPLAN?

Modules like "stair" which have been pretty much unchanged in the last 20 years...

Unfortunately is not well-know as other software. However, having previous experience as teacher at the University, I always managed training in-house.

Few things I would like to see in the next releases:

1) Developing further modules for timber and steel construction (boosting the use of macro and smart parts)

2) Introducing a basic module to calculate U value and Glaser Diagram (that is a very straightforward improvement) would be beneficial.

3) Introducing a module to do the daylight calculation (something like Velux Daylight Visualiser..)

4) introducing a basic module for MEP as standard feature for architecture Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is ALLPLAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

I never worked with traditional CAD in my professional career.

Just the idea of working in a 2D or 3D non-parametric environment is simply madness in my view.

Since the very beginning (20 years ago) I've experienced at least 50% of time savings for standard architectural drawings.

In the last 6 years I started developing construction models (initially in architectural firm, later in a construction company).

With Construction Modelling I solve 95% of problems occurring on site in 5% of the time.

More recently, with a friend and colleague, I've developed a system to synchronise the model with third party pricing books: we obtain estimate of cost in a matter of minutes.

The accuracy of our cost estimate is exceptionally good.

Using a specific platform (BIM plus) we are now experimenting the use of the model directly on site to check on details, materials, etc.

After 20 years I can certainly say that I'm working BIM completely with all the 5 dimension (3+ Cost + Time) which is a great achievement.

The biggest benefit is that, once built on screen, any project will be built on site without any surprise, missing information, uncoordinated information.

I'm not a fan of the so-called "federated model" as roles and responsibility are still rigidly dictated by the traditional way of working.

Nonetheless, I've exchanged information and pieces of model with colleagues structural engineers without problems improving coordination and clash detection. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

I like a lot the interface ALLPLAN uses. I find it a lot easy to grasp, even if you are a beginner user. It is pretty user-friendly, without needing to do extensive research about how to do things (for basic tasks at least). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ALLPLAN?

I like using ALLPLAN by itself. But I cannot not admit that it is being brutally replace by other BIM software. It is getting more and more difficult to find producers that develop ALLPLAN libraries and also even searching the net for a solution to some problem is becoming quite impossible given the fact that more and more people are using said other BIM software instead of ALLPLAN. Recommendations to others considering ALLPLAN:

I would recommend users who have not used ALLPLAN to have a look at it especially if they need such type of software for a specific tasks. It would take them a lot less time to do it with ALLPLAN than other similar software that has a lot more complicated interface. Still, if you are going to need to start using BIM software continually (which at least in my industry is becoming a 'must') I would recommend having a look at other, more 'popular' software and developers. What problems is ALLPLAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

In my company we have generally been using ALLPLAN for getting a complete 3D model and consistent information for our projects. It was a lot more useful to use than the purely 2D drawing software we used before switching to ALLPLAN. The transition cost us time but it was totally worth it. "One of the best softwares for planning buildings"

What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

I like the structure of the program, and the freedom to open different drawings (editable and non-editable) at the same time. The drawings can be used as reference or as primary file. The platform is able to co-working at the same time thanks to the structure. And the structure of ALLPLAN is clear, easy to use and very easy to learn. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ALLPLAN?

Not being able to work from separate computers (from physically different places) on the same project at the same time smoothly. With large files and with lot of data ALLPLAN can be slower at the editing. There are failures what don`t have any reason and can cause dataloss. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering ALLPLAN:

If they need it for 3D modelling or for 2D drwaings then ALLPLAN is the right tool for them. In a smaller or also in a bigger office is the perfect software for small buildings and even for very big projects. You can manage it very easily all within ALLPLAN. What problems is ALLPLAN solving and how is that benefiting you?

Producing plans in a timely manner; the time required to finish a plan is reduced, thanks to Allplan. In 3D modelling are a lot of possibilities. "Resourceful, easy to use"

What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

BIM capabilities, easy and efficient measurement and export of quantities, efficient actual drafting tools and workflow, capabilities to organize and tackle big projects, capabilities of collaboration between all involved in the construction process Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ALLPLAN?

for actual architectural conceptual or first design not an ideal tool in comparison with, for instance, sketchup, although great for error-proofing of designs in a second step. Creation of macros, although a very powerful tool, suffers from an awkward interface. Data connection with/to some very popular local/national cost/offer management systems is lacking or poor/awkward. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering ALLPLAN:

If you are looking for an all round modular package to get all work done, which any building challenge may throw at you, Allplan is a very good candidate. Especially its BIM capabilities are very good and future proof. Caution with too high of expectations regarding a sketchup-like first draft/design approach though, Allplan is not the right tool for that particular job. Be aware also of the fact, that your local/national system of construction progress may not be a 100% mirrored by the structure that Allplan provides you. General construction work planning and work in reformation or repair of existing buildings. The main benefit I and our studio get out of the use of Allplan is the huge time savings compared to other products and the flexibility and speed with which we can respond to changes on site or in user and customer requirements. What do you like best about ALLPLAN?

Since also reinforcements can be modelled in 3D it is much more easy to have an overview of the reinforcement positions in densely reinforced zones such as joints and overlapping zones. Since severall design codes are included it simplifies the process of reinforcement detailing. Another plus is that several cross sections, materials and element types are already implicitely defined in the software, whereas for more complex structural systems with non-regular cross section types it is possible to defined manually the elements. Generation of drawings is fast and easy. If the structure is properly modelled the list of quantities can easily be exported by choosing different filters. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ALLPLAN?

With Allplan Engineering, models can be created quickly and quite accurately. Reinforced concrete drawings can be generated straight from 3D model including bill of materials.

the fact that I can draw the plans, reinforcements and even have the option to verify my calculations is very convenient. I can draw any kind of elements (prefabricated or not), add any missing insert and even edit the existing ones.
