## OpenVAS Reviews
  ### 1. A powerful and free tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Victor Hugo M. | Security Delivery Senior Analyst - Vulnerability Management , Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 30, 2023

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

OpenVAS is a great free software for vulnerability scans, offering good performance compared to other free tools. Easy to deploy and well configurable.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The UI of OpenVAS can be confusing for new users. The options are hidden and not very intuitive. The lack of a more well-developed and organized inventory can also be a point of improvement.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use OpenVAS for external and unauthenticated scans of critical hosts and firewalls. Using the QoD at 80% brings me good results by reducing false positives and avoiding triage issues. The report standards in CSV, PDF, and JSON are great, with the PDF format being superior to tools in the same niche that are paid.

  ### 2. Openvas pros and cons

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Talha A. | Senior Cloud & Security Engineer | Deputy Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 18, 2021

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

Automation of openvas is really best, It just take the IP and start the scanning.
Alien vault taking this product as in built in its features.
On the other hand multiple operating systems are supported by openvas. It is opensource based and free of cost as usual and use full to small business coverage.
It has been built to be an all-in-one scanner which is being updated or recurring basis, you can either select it manual or take a scheduled job on automatic basis. Overall this is really a good product and support many scanning engine in a single pane of glass.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

Its Input method is quit annoying for beginner users, secondly it could deep inspection as manually a person could do. on the web scanning some times it leave very basic vulnerabilities due to automation. and one thing I would like to add more about its scanning result its covering the less vulnerabilities as compare to other products.
false positive also been observed in openvas.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

Its Free
OpenSource Based
Fully Customizable
Easy to manage
work faster on a large scale

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

scanning the whole network or a bunch of devices in a frequent manner is a problem to me, but openvas can do this in a single pane, secondly finding a relevant cva against vulnerabilities is quit easy with this green-bone tech.

  ### 3. OpenVAS is a free DIY vulnerability scanning tool that all businesses should leverage

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Frank B. | Senior Information Technology Auditor, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

OpenVAS is helpful in providing a vulnerability scanning application that can be paired with a GUI for allowing IT security groups to deliver effective reporting in providing technological risks. I like the plug in using greenbone security assistant to enhance OpenVas with a graphical tool to make easy of use even better.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The Open source nature can make it difficult to run when dependencies break as a result of Linux distros updating or upgrading. The pdf report generation is commonly what breaks most often.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

I recommend that users trying implementing OpenVas through Kali Linux first. Try playing around with the tool and use modules in the msfconsole to get further insight on how some of these vulnerabilities can be exploited. The ideal scenario for business deployment is to use OpenVAS on a headless CentOS VM either on prem or as an EC2 instance in AWS.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a consultant, security tools have been an expensive barrier to entry in order to get serious about analyzing IT risk. OpenVAS has been a savior for non-profit groups that need to meet compliance whether it be HIPAA, PCI, etc. In times where procuring Nessus licensing can be tough, OpenVAS has filled that void. For audit purposes, OpenVAS has been a valuable addition for checking Nessus and Qualys scans to validate that results are accurate.

  ### 4. The best Open sources for vulnerability assessment and security incidents

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pappu M. | Cyber Forensic Analyst, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 15, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

It is an excellent suite of tools created to be able to follow, Keeping a state of full visibility of vulnerable hosts within your network allows individual systems engineers to deploy effective measures to prevent intrusions aimed at exploiting those vulnerabilities. It automates our manual task of scanning and searching vulnerabilities within our network and gives detail analysis and reports based on severity pointers which helps us to take appropriate action.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

There is no negative because it is open sources project and the result is getting far better then any other sources

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm Cyber security professional and i'm using this tool for finding any vulnerabilities in our current IT infrastructures which include Network switches, NAS Storage and HPE Server which is dedicated for Ediscovery . It give me overview report of my IT Infrastructure which include severity of IT Infrastructure and i can immediate action against those severity.

  ### 5. The best free and unlimited security auditor for IEC/ISO compliance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rita T. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 06, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

The ability to plan tasks on a daily, monthly or yearly basis allows you to devote your time to different objectives and leave OpenVAS to do the "dirty work" and generate valid and descriptive reports of the problem or vulnerabilities found.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

it is a bit difficult to configure in the initial part regarding the number of Redis processes (used to store the logs), an incorrect configuration will in fact make the VM / server resources jump to the maximum and will not allow you to end the scan and the reporting process.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Every year my company needs to renew the IEC 27001 certification relating to information security and it is therefore necessary to produce a series of documents, reports and graphics that show the total integrity and confidentiality of our systems, thanks to OpenVAS I can demonstrate that the same they are not at risk of being compromised by vulnerabilities or attacks.

  ### 6. Great for automatically searching for vulnerabilities in web applications that are developed or in development

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Arnaldo B. | Web Designer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 03, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

I like the fact that there is a quick deployment option using a virtualized image, it is also generally good for Free to implement small-scale projects, it provides substantial feedback and yet not exaggerated by the results without a shadow of a spectrum causing forced hacker entry.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The best thing about this tool is the large, free, and developed community. It quickly finds common vulnerabilities and provides a correct report. Good for small businesses. It comes bundled with Debian, deft Linux, and backtrack, and gives fast results. Easy to use, user-friendly GUI.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

I advise setting up a full scan of your LAN network correctly and in advance, so as to have a benchmark and a comparative method for evaluation for subsequent scans and the related mitigations you will apply.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The plugins are not updated regularly for the latest vulnerabilities, so most of the latest vulnerabilities are missing. It does not support all available operating systems. There is a need to increase support for all accredited operating systems. Scans cannot be done correctly with this tool.

  ### 7. OpenVAS Review

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Research | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 12, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

OpenVAS has a good amount of feature for vulnerability scanning and vulnerability management. when using it for my projects, comparing OpenVAS with other tools like it, OpenVAS was able to find more vulnerabilities, showing how accurate OpenVAS is. Another benefit to OpenVAS it is a free tool, allowing to have access to everything the tool has to offer, unlike other tools where only part of the tool is free. with the open souce nature of OpenVAS this give the user option to create their own plugins to use with OpenVAS, this makes OpenVAS very felixable.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

there are only few thing i dislike about OpenVAS , compared to other tools the UI of OpenVAS looks bit outdated. another point to make on the UI is insted of seeing total threats, it would be better to see what threats are connected to which device on the dashbord insted of having to navgate around the UI to find it. As when using other tools the treat information for each device is shown stright away.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

use the tool first and get use to it before having to impletment it fully and do not be scared to ask the communtiy for help.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

the problems i was solving with OpenVAS was securing my home network and reconnaissance for pentesting. when using OpenVAS i did not realized how some devices i had connected in my house was as vulnable as they where and with the information from OPenVAS i was able to secure them. When OpenVAS was used for reconnaissance this has been a massive benefit as it as found expolits or other avenues of gaining access to a network that i would not of thinked of.

  ### 8. I have been working with OpenVas for over 4 years.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Augustine Michael U. | Information Security Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 31, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

The most helpful thing about OpenVAS is the fact that it can accomplish everything that non free vulnerability Scanners can accomplish and yet free.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The downside of OpenVas is the fact that sometime, you may get some false positives. But i think this is absolutely fine because almost all vulnerability scanner does the same. Hence the tool just need to be continually improved to get better and better

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used Openvas as an Enterprise vulnerability scanner and it has helped me to fixed vulnerabilities in my organization network and improved security immensely.
And i have done all that free of charge.

  ### 9. Good Vulnerability Scanning and management Tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Prashant B. | Product Development Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 13, 2020

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

As Openvas is open-source tool and also comes packed with Kali Linux.
It helps me to perform vulnerability scanning, which allows me to work on particular vulnerabilities.

Best part of Openvas is it supports vulnerability scanning for both host and network and generate a report contanting all vulnerability or threats with their risk matrix such as high, medium and low in understandable format.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

Plugins are not updated frequently as other vulnerability scanner and little bit slower than other tools.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me to complete my security assessment little bit faster due to scanning a particular vulnerabilities.

  ### 10. Manage your software vulnerabilities in a completely automatic and planned manner

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul M. | Senior Security Specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

OpenVAS is not a SIEM but allows, just like the more expensive software in the sector, in a completely free manner and without additional costs or limitations, to add the inventory of your hosts and devices and to plan in total simplicity and interactively through a GUI the various scans to be executed in search of software, server, and service vulnerabilities and their code, also allowing you to choose and fully manage the depth level of the scans themselves.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The recommended installation method on GitHub on the OpenVAS - Greenbone page, the only method that allows you to automatically receive scan engine updates, does not work due to a bug in the recommended Redis configuration. To fix it, I had to search on unofficial forums, which is not pleasant.

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

Constantly keep your CVE rules updated using the appropriate commands to initiate the download of databases related to new vulnerabilities. This will help you avoid falling behind on vulnerabilities that are released daily, some of which are serious.

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to control and plan the launch of vulnerability scans completely automatically and to issue, always automatically, the reports related to findings/results to present them to the teams that will handle the fixing has simplified my life and allowed me to speed up troubleshooting and vulnerabilities management operations.

  ### 11. Open source VA Tool

**Recommendations to others considering OpenVAS:**

please make GUI more simple its little complex

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

All the VULNERABILITY which are there in our web apps and network get resolved by using this tool
We get the accurate report from openvas

  ### 12. Excellent open source software for vulnerability management, a must-have for small and medium enterprises.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dario O. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2019

**What do you like best about OpenVAS?**

OpenVAS, also known as Greenbone Assistant or GVM, is a free and open-source web app for major Linux distributions that, leveraging the powerful OpenVAS scanning engine, allows you to obtain and test any hosts or any subnet of hosts against all vulnerabilities found and reported on CVE and other authoritative historical datasets containing such vulnerabilities. The GUI allows for the immediate creation or scheduling of manual, scheduled, or repeated tests through an event scheduler, and through the same GUI, it is possible to see the progress of the scan as well as any issues encountered and/or vulnerabilities found in real-time without waiting for the scan to finish. I consider OpenVAS the most authoritative tool for conducting non-destructive security audits on one's infrastructure, and the speed and simplicity with which it allows you to quickly achieve results of significant value for security and business make it the first tool to install and learn to use for any expert/operator in the Security field.

**What do you dislike about OpenVAS?**

The default Redis configuration is not suitable for handling scans with large numbers of hosts and their open services. Therefore, it is necessary, although not officially documented, to perform a very complex tuning to avoid crashes and the unavailability of the VM where OpenVAS is installed, which would result in the loss of data and control over ongoing and past scans. Furthermore, the log export option does not allow filtering what to include in the PDF report and what not (e.g., false positives or already resolved issues).

**What problems is OpenVAS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With OpenVAS installed and running, I can keep track of individual vulnerabilities and their resolution status and severity, as well as plan continuous, automated, and in-depth scans on my LAN and corporate public IPs at times that do not impact work activities, with corresponding alerting to the designated figures (Security operators) in case of new serious vulnerabilities emerging. The time I save through the automation of scans and the creation of PDF reports is immeasurable; OpenVAS is a godsend and allows me to dedicate the time usually spent performing individual scans at various levels of depth to activities of greater interest or training.
