# What are the long-term engagement strategies and retention support in language learning platforms before signing a long-term vendor contract?

Language platforms are very easy to evaluate during a four-week pilot. Everyone is new, participation is high, and the leaderboard still feels interesting. The harder question is what happens in month eight.

Before signing a long-term language-learning contract, I would ask vendors to show:

monthly active usage after six and twelve months

learner return rates after inactivity

manager nudges and cohort campaigns

live coaching or instructor support

role-specific learning paths

proficiency progression rather than lesson counts

what the customer-success team does when usage starts dropping

G2 currently tracks a large business-language-learning market, with products such as Duolingo, Memrise, and Busuu serving enterprise language programs alongside self-paced and instructor-led learning. For L&D teams running a program for more than a year, what actually kept people coming back after the launch push ended?

I’d look closely at what happens after participation drops, not just the engagement features available at launch. The stronger vendors are probably the ones that can identify inactive learners early and help L&D teams re-engage them with targeted nudges or coaching.
