I use 7-Zip for really basic things: opening ZIP and RAR files, sending folders with documents and compressing screenshots before sharing them. What I like is that I never have to think about it. It's lightweight with a very small footprint (in terms of disk space and memory usage). It's easy to install and integrates seamlessly with the Windows operating system optionally added to context menus. It can be used via the command line and thus be easily incorporated into scripts (batch files and Powershell scripts for example) as well as be used interactively with the provide GUI app. The installer even comes with a comprehensive help file - no need to launch into a web browser. Best of all - it's free and open-source! It is one of the first apps I install on a brand new machine and receives regular updates and is actively maintained. What do you dislike about 7Z? 7Z lacks some features found in WinRAR, for example the Archive tab of the File Properties showing stats including number of files, packed size and unpacked size along with a visual bar indicator showing the compression ratio. Portabilty and compatibilty of a zip archiving tool that is free and straight-forward to install and provides much more functionality than the built-in Windows zip archiving functionality with fast performance and high compression ratios.
