# Which owned media platforms simplify audience growth through built-in recommendation systems?

One of the quiet advantages I've always loved about some owned media platforms is that they help you grow without paid ads through built-in recommendations that surface your content to the right readers. I've loved this aspect of it as a creator, and hence I've been researching the Owned Media category for the platforms whose reviewers actually credit those cross-promotion and recommendation features with adding subscribers.

beehiiv: Reviewers single out the recommendation network and referral program as genuine growth drivers, alongside analytics that show where subscribers come from. The learning curve on initial site setup is the main early hurdle they mention.

Substack: Its Notes feed and cross-writer recommendations get specific credit for helping creators reach new readers without an existing following. Discovery for brand-new creators can still be slow, and it's off the current Grid with a small review base.

Ghost: Supports newsletter recommendations and integrates widely, so it can plug into a growth stack, though reviewers treat it more as a solid publishing base than a discovery engine in its own right.

Patreon: Helps convert an existing audience into paying members, but reviewers are candid that discovery is largely on the creator, since built-in promotion is limited.

And did recommendation-driven subscribers stick around as well as the ones you brought yourself?

For sustainable growth, test whether the platform's recommendations drive subscribers who actually open emails and convert to paid, not just subscribers who clicked once.

My guess is that recommendation-driven subscribers stick around about as well as anyone else, since the recommendation itself is really just a warmer introduction to content that already matches their interests. The bigger variable is probably what happens in that first email after they join, not how they arrived.

### Comment 3

I’d expect built-in recommendations to contribute a meaningful share of early growth because they put the publication in front of readers who might never find it through the creator’s own channels. The bigger test for me would be retention. If recommendation-driven subscribers keep opening and reading at similar rates to organically acquired subscribers, that’s when I’d consider the recommendation engine a real growth channel.

### Comment 4

Curious how much the recommendation network actually moves the needle for people on beehiiv. Like, are those subscribers sticking around or is it a lot of churn from people who clicked through something random? Growth numbers look nice but retention seems like the real test.
