&lt;p&gt;There&#39;s an observable answer to the thinking-versus-presentation question: check whether maps get revisited. A map that shaped real thinking keeps getting edited after the meeting it was made for, because the thinking continued; a presentation map is finished the moment it&#39;s shown, and a workspace full of untouched maps is a decorated graveyard. By that test, the linking of maps to actual work items matters more than canvas polish, since a map wired to live tasks has a reason to stay alive.&lt;/p&gt;
