Underwriting & Rating Software Discussions
I've been comparing notes on which comparative rater for independent insurance agents has the most carrier integrations, and the raw numbers from the underwriting and rating software category are easy to line up, so I'll give them first and then the catch that recent reviews add. All counts are the vendors' own: PL Rating claims access to over 320 carriers, TurboRater claims 200+ carriers across all 50 states, and EZLynx claims hundreds of carriers across 48 states. Here's what the evidence supports beyond the counts:
- PL Rating: The biggest stated number at 320+ (vendor-stated), and more usefully, recent review confirmation that coverage holds in practice, with a busy office noting the majority of their carriers work with it. The catch lives in its cons: carrier limitations rank among its most-cited complaints, and recent reviews describe carrier-specific question setups producing quotes that change after bridging, which is what a carrier integration existing but working shallowly looks like.
- TurboRater: The 200+ claim comes with the all-50-states detail (vendor-stated), which matters more than the headline count for agencies in states the bigger raters treat thinly. No recent review text tests its carrier depth, so the count is a starting list for the only check that matters below.
- EZLynx: Hundreds of carriers across 48 states with daily carrier downloads keeping policy data current (vendor-stated), and recent substantive reviews confirm real-time quoting working as a daily habit. Its inaccuracy cons apply here too: connection count and connection quality are different measurements.
- QuoteRush: Publishes no count and simply claims all of your carriers from one screen (vendor-stated), which is honest in its own way: for a regional agency, the eight carriers you actually write are the only integrations that exist.
The catch recent reviews add to every count above: an integration that returns a rate is not the same as one that returns your rate, with the right questions, credits, and coverages for that carrier in your state. The check that beats every published number: take your top eight carriers by premium volume, run one real risk through each in a trial, and compare against the carrier portal directly. A rater that nails your eight beats one with 300 logos. Anyone willing to share their hit rate: of your appointed carriers, how many actually rate accurately in your rater versus needing the carrier site anyway?
The distinction between connection count and connection quality is a good one. PL Rating's 320+ carriers give a broad reach, and reviewers confirm strong coverage in daily use, with depth that varies by state and line. So the most useful measure is accurate coverage for the carriers and lines you actually write, rather than a headline number. Respondents naming their state and lines would make the comparison much more actionable.
Accuracy across the carriers an agency actually writes would matter more to me than the headline integration count. If several quotes still need to be rechecked in carrier portals, a 300-carrier network doesn’t really reduce the workflow enough to justify itself.
I’d go one step beyond whether a carrier returns an accurate rate and check how much information survives the round trip. If the agent still has to re-enter coverage details, endorsements, or applicant data after moving into the carrier portal, the integration may be technically available without removing much work from the quoting process.
Rekeying is the tax every agency pays twice, once entering the risk to quote it and again entering the bound policy into the AMS, and I went through recent underwriting and rating software reviews specifically asking what insurance rating tools integrate with agency management systems to avoid rekeying data. The short answer is that three tools credibly attack it from three different directions, and the reviews also show where rekeying sneaks back in. Here's the short list:
- TurboRater: The most explicit no-rekeying promise in the category: at bind, insured details, coverages, premiums, and effective dates transfer automatically into the connected AMS, in both directions, across 50+ AMS connections (vendor-stated). It's also the promise with the least recent review verification, so pilot it on a real bind before believing it, but as a stated design goal it's precisely this question's answer.
- EZLynx: Removes the hop by being both systems: eliminating duplicate entry is core positioning (vendor-stated), and recent substantive reviews describe quoting, client records, forms, and policy documents living in one place so nothing gets retyped between systems. The rekeying that survives, per the same recent reviews: the platform sometimes creates duplicate client records on its own, which means cleanup work that is rekeying wearing a costume.
- PL Rating: The established bridge: instant synchronization with AMS360, QQCatalyst, and Sagitta that the vendor positions around eliminating manual tasks (vendor-stated), with a recent review confirming information bridging into two other systems as daily routine in a high-volume office. The recent con that reintroduces typing: when a quote errors out or data is incomplete, reviews describe starting fresh on the carrier's own site, and everything typed there is rekeying by another name.
- One honest addition from the review evidence: rekeying doesn't only hide between rater and AMS. Recent reviews across these products describe retyping at the carrier bridge, after unexplained errors, and during duplicate-record cleanup, so the AMS integration is necessary but not sufficient to kill it.
To actually measure this before buying, run one week's real workflow in a trial and count keystrokes-twice moments end to end, quote, bridge, bind, AMS, not just the rater-to-AMS hop the sales demo shows. The tool that wins this question is the one that minimizes total retyping, and per recent reviews, that leaderboard can differ from the integration-count leaderboard.
What's the one field you still retype every single time despite your integrations? Mine would be a revealing thread.
EZLynx reviewers value the all-in-one setup that removes most double entry, and occasionally mention tidying duplicate records. PL Rating reviewers note they sometimes finish a quote on the carrier site when data is incomplete. So the field that still gets retyped is usually whatever a specific carrier bridge does not carry across, which makes this more carrier-specific than tool-specific.
We really need to track our new busienss and renewal retention and would like any help you may have on this issue!
