What Are Load Balancing Algorithms? All You Need To Know
Picture a restaurant host seating incoming guests in different parts of the restaurant to distribute the workload among the waitstaff. The host aims to ensure that no single server feels overwhelmed or becomes responsible for more tables than they can handle. This process also means guests receive timely service.

Yes. The HAProxy ALOHA virtual load balancer ships as a pre-packaged image with native support for VMware, alongside Microsoft Hyper-V and KVM. You deploy it on the hypervisor you already run and route production traffic from the same environment as the rest of your stack, with no appliance to rack and no procurement wait. Since it runs as a standard VM, it slots into your existing operations: you can snapshot or roll it back like any other virtual machine, and scale or relocate it without touching physical hardware. It carries the full Layer 4 and Layer 7 load balancing of the HAProxy ALOHA line, and PacketShield DDoS filtering is included as well, since it works at the Linux kernel level. The difference is performance: without the dedicated hardware NIC, PacketShield on a VM will not always reach line rate, which is where the ALOHA hardware load balancer comes in.

Both are available. HAProxy ALOHA ships as a 1U hardware appliance if you want a dedicated box with predictable throughput and patented PacketShield DDoS filtering at line rate. The same Layer 4 and Layer 7 load balancing also comes as a virtual load balancer for VMware, Hyper-V, and KVM if you would rather not rack hardware. Both are built on HAProxy Enterprise, so the load balancing matches either way. The one hardware-specific piece is line-rate PacketShield DDoS filtering, which runs at wire speed on the HAProxy ALOHA hardware load balancer.
