GitHub Copilot

345 reviews

GitHub Copilot is powered by a combination of large language models (LLMs), including a customized version of OpenAI’s GPT that translates natural language to code and additional models from Microsoft and GitHub to further hone and improve upon results. Available as an extension for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Neovim, and the JetBrains suite of integrated development environments (IDEs), GitHub Copilot works alongside developers in their preferred editor, where they can either type as they go or write comments to get coding suggestions. As a result, developers spend less time creating boilerplate and repetitive code patterns, and more time on what matters: building great software. GitHub Copilot was developed with security, privacy, and responsibility in mind. GitHub Copilot for Business never retains customer code from prompts or suggestions. Only users who are on an individual license and choose to opt-in will be retained. Additionally, users can enable a mechanism that blocks suggestions that match public code, even if the likelihood of matches is low.

How GitHub Copilot Changed the Way I Code Me in Flow and Saves Hours

Honestly, the biggest win for me is the time it saves. The autocomplete is scarily good — it doesn't just finish a line, it'll suggest entire functions based on a comment I wrote. It also keeps me in flow. I'm not jumping to Stack Overflow every few minutes for syntax help, especially in languages I don't use daily. And writing tests? Way less painful now. Copilot handles a lot of that grunt work. Overall, it just makes me a faster developer.

My Experience Using GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is like my friend sitting next to me while I code. I use it mostly inside VS Code, and since my projects are connected to GitHub, it fits naturally into the way I already work, I talk with copilot like peer to discuss code best approach and all. A lot of times I use it when I get an error and cannot immediately see what is wrong. Instead of searching through different websites, I ask Copilot for suggestions and it points me in the right direction. I also use it when building small applications from an idea. For example, if I want to create an API, a form, or a new feature, I can describe what I want and get a basic version that I can work on. Another thing I like is that it helps with repetitive code. Instead of writing the same type of code again and again, I can use given suggestion and then make small changes based on what I need.
