"Powerful Modeling and Engineering, but an Outdated UI and Slowdowns on Large Models"
3.5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is how much it speeds up going from an idea to a usable database design. I can sketch entities and relationships visually and then generate the structured query language directly from the model, instead of manual writing large scripts. The reverse engineering feature is equally valuable because it lets me pull an accurate model out of an existing database so I can clearly see the current updated structure. With the shared modeling environment, developers and analysts are all looking at the same latest version of diagram, which has already helped us catch relationship issues early and avoid rework. What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

The downside for me is the user interface. It does everything I need, but the design feels dated and the navigation isn’t very intuitive, especially with so many nested menus. When my models grow large (over 150 tables), the tool can become sluggish and the automatic layout often produces diagrams that are hard to read, so I end up spending extra time rearranging entities by hand. There’s also a noticeable learning curve at the beginning—I needed a couple of days of trial and error just to get comfortable finding the right options. On top of that, the license cost is higher than some lighter or open-source alternatives, even though it does become a dependable workhorse once you’re past the setup and learning phase. "Essential for Visualizing and Comparing Complex Data Models"
4.5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I really like the complete compare feature in erwin Data Modeler. It allows me to compare my data model against a live database and see exactly what's different, helping me prevent schema drift. If someone made a change in production without notifying others, I can see it instantly. This feature also helps me generate the specific alter script, saving hours of manual SQL writing. The tool is invaluable for bridging the gap between business requirements and actual databases by allowing me to create diagrams and visualize table-column relationships before coding. It enforces consistent naming standards and data types across the enterprise, and it's also great for impact analysis. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

Erwin still relies heavily on a Mart for collaboration and doesn't play well with modern Git workflows. I would love to see a native Git-friendly format so I can branch, merge, and request my data model just like I do with my application code. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Review of erwin Data Modular an Powerful Data Modeling tool."
5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I use erwin Data Modeler for designing databases, and it really helps reduce poor database design. It also cuts down on data redundancy and inconsistency. What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is that instead of reading hundreds of SQL lines, I can see tables and relationships instantly, understand how data flows, and spot design issues early. I find the Diagram Editor (ER Diagrams), Forward Engineering (SQL Generation), Model Validation, Reverse Engineering, Metadata Manager, Naming Standards Editor, and the compare and merge functionality especially valuable. Also, handling complex relationships and large models is much easier with this tool. The initial setup wasn't difficult because we received clear steps from the support team, which was helpful. What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

The UI can feel a bit old compared to modern tools. The license cost could use a revision as well. Performance with large models needs improvement. Integration with modern data tools isn't seamless, as it's not fully 'cloud-native'; it’s still primarily a desktop-based tool, and the cloud features feel like add-ons rather than native components. "Robust Tool for Managing Complex Data Models"
4.5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I use erwin Data Modeler mainly to design and maintain our database schema, and it helps me map relationships clearly, catch structure issues early, and keep the whole data model consistent. What I like most is how clearly it helps me visualize the whole data model and spot relationships or design gaps before they become problems, making planning much easier. It saves a lot of time when updating or explaining the structure to others. The setup was pretty much easier compared to other competitors. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

One thing that could be better is the learning curve, especially if you are not using it every day. Some parts of the interface also feel a bit dated, so a more modern experience would make it easier to work faster. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Robust and Complex, Ideal for Professional Environments"
4/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is the clarity it brings to database design. It allows me to visualize relationships, document complex structures, and maintain an organized and consistent model, something especially valuable in professional environments. Besides its modeling capability, I greatly appreciate how well it organizes complex structures and facilitates documentation. It works especially well in large projects, where maintaining clarity, consistency, and control over changes is essential. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

What convinces me the least about erwin Data Modeler is that it can have a steep learning curve and a less modern interface than expected. Although it is a very powerful tool, in small projects or for new users it can feel somewhat complex and cumbersome. I think erwin Data Modeler could improve in several usability aspects. The interface feels somewhat outdated and, at times, navigating between functions is not as intuitive as it could be. It would also be useful to have a more user-friendly experience for new users, with wizards, better-guided templates, and a less steep learning curve. In large models, I would appreciate more modern options to organize, filter, and visualize elements more efficiently. Additionally, a more accessible licensing structure could make it more attractive for small teams or projects with less budget. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A Strong Tool for Better Data Modeling, Governance, and Collaboration"
4.5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

It makes it much easier to understand relationships between entities, maintain consistency across the data model, and document the overall architecture. I also appreciate that it supports both logical and physical modeling, which is very helpful when moving from business requirements to implementation. Overall, it’s a strong tool for improving data design quality, collaboration, and governance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

What I dislike about erwin Data Modeler is that the user experience can sometimes feel outdated and less intuitive than more modern tools. For new users in particular, the interface and certain workflows take time to learn and get comfortable with. On top of that, some tasks feel more manual than I would expect, and collaboration or integration with other modern platforms isn’t always as seamless as it could be. Overall, while it’s a powerful tool, there’s clearly room to improve usability and day-to-day efficiency. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Intuitive Design, But Performance Lags on Large Models"
4/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I really enjoy using erwin Data Modeler for designing visual maps of my database, as it makes the schema accessible to everyone. The design is very user-friendly, and I don't need several applications to cover my needs. I appreciate that there are no more manual syntax errors or typos when deploying new tables. The visualization is complex, ensuring no messy tables. I also like the ability to rename or change several tables with one click, which saves a lot of time. The initial setup was very easy and understandable, with no need to watch tutorial videos. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

I think the point for improving for erwin Data Modeler is performance with huge models, cause if you have a 1000+ entities and complex relations it can lag or even crash. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Empowers Our Team with Centralized Data Modeling"
4.5/5
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I like the ease of use that erwin Data Modeler offers. Its reporting capabilities are really beneficial, especially when I need to generate various reports to share with team members who don’t have access to the software. The ability to contribute as a team with an enterprise license is crucial for us as we're a large, non-colocated team. The check-in/check-out feature helps eliminate silos, allowing multiple team members to work on the same model efficiently. I appreciate having a centralized place for both logical and physical data models. The software also allows us to quickly start with logical models and then convert them to physical models, which is great for proofs of concept. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

Exporting PDF version of the data model for large files doesn’t work as expected. Also, sometimes creating reports from the modeler takes longer, and the software crashes or doesn’t respond. Printing the model as PDF requires manually fitting the file and adjusting the print ratio, which can be challenging. Additionally, switching between devices requires reallocating the license to a new machine. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
