  ### 8. Reliable for Large-Scale Data Architecture Diagrams on AWS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thrishikha J. | Front Desk Staff, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 09, 2026

**What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?**

I used erwin Data Modeler on a large-scale data engineering project on AWS, mainly for creating block diagrams to map out and communicate our data architecture. Here's my honest take across the key areas:
UI/UX
The interface feels functional but dated. It gets the job done, but it's not the most intuitive experience — especially if you're coming from a modern cloud-native tooling background. There's a learning curve, and navigating some of the menus takes getting used to. Once you're familiar with the layout, it becomes more manageable, but onboarding new team members to it wasn't seamless.
Integrations
For an AWS-heavy project, integration support was adequate but not exceptional. It connected well enough with our data sources, but I'd have liked tighter native integration with AWS services like Glue or Redshift. Some workarounds were needed to fit it smoothly into our existing pipeline.
Performance
On large-scale models with complex relationships, performance held up reasonably well. There were occasional slowdowns when handling very large diagrams, but nothing that was a major blocker. For the scale we were working at, it was acceptable.
Pricing / ROI
The pricing is on the higher end, which may be harder to justify for smaller teams or short-term projects. For an enterprise-scale project where data documentation and architecture clarity are critical, the ROI makes more sense — but it's not a budget-friendly option.
Support / Onboarding
Support was decent when we needed it, though response times could be improved. The documentation is fairly comprehensive, which helped during the initial setup. Formal onboarding resources exist but feel a little outdated compared to what you'd expect from modern SaaS tools.
AI / Intelligence
This is probably the weakest area currently. AI-assisted features are limited compared to newer tools entering the data modelling space. For automated suggestions, smart mapping, or intelligent schema recommendations, it doesn't yet compete with more AI-forward platforms. This feels like an area where it needs to invest to stay relevant.

**What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?**

Expensive licensing, hard to justify for smaller teams or one-off projects
Pricing model feels behind the times compared to modern SaaS alternatives
Limited native integration with AWS services (Glue, Redshift, S3 etc.)
Requires manual workarounds to fit into modern cloud pipelines
Doesn't play as nicely with modern DevOps/DataOps workflows

**What problems is erwin Data Modeler solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Visual Clarity at Scale

Large-scale data pipelines are hard to communicate without a visual reference
erwin gave a single source of truth for how data flows and relates across the architecture
Made it easier to spot gaps, redundancies, or design issues early
Team Communication

Translating complex data architecture to stakeholders, developers, and analysts is difficult
Block diagrams created in erwin made cross-team discussions much more productive
Reduced back-and-forth by having a clear visual everyone could reference
Documentation

Large AWS projects generate a lot of complexity that's easy to lose track of
erwin helped document the data model formally, which is useful for audits, onboarding new team members, and handovers
Kept the architecture organised and traceable

  ### 19. As a Must-Have for Enterprise Data Management

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Denis S. | Web Developer, Information Technology and Services, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 19, 2026

**What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?**

I primarily use erwin Data Modeler for visualizing and documenting the structure of our databases. I really like the reverse engineering feature, which helps create diagrams, understand relationships between tables, and identify bottlenecks in the architecture. This speeds up the process of understanding the project and preparing for changes. My favorite feature is Complete Compare. It is the best tool for bidirectional synchronization, allowing for a detailed comparison of the model with a live database or another model file, highlighting all differences and generating a script. This eliminates the need to write complex SQL queries manually and minimizes the risk of errors. Erwin Data Modeler automates data quality control and keeps documentation up to date, especially in high-speed development scenarios. The ability to perform reverse comparison helps find changes made by database administrators and import them back into the model. This ensures consistency between the physical database and the model logic, which free alternatives cannot provide.

**What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?**

The main and most obvious drawback is the outdated user interface. This creates a high entry barrier for young developers, as time is spent memorizing nested menus. erwin Data Modeler really excels at translating data into real-world physical representations that are easy to understand and share. It’s also easy to integrate, which makes it straightforward to fit into my workflow.

**What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?**

The upfront cost can be hard to swallow, especially when you’re working with larger teams. If you’re new to data modeling, the interface can feel a bit overwhelming to learn at first. I also find that resolving conflicts through the UI can be difficult to manage.

**What problems is erwin Data Modeler solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I recently had a situation where I needed to compare two older versions of the same database to determine what had changed over the years. The database had grown significantly, and manually reviewing the schema or comparing SQL scripts would have been extremely time-consuming. Using erwin Data Modeler, I was able to reverse-engineer both versions of the database into separate data models and then perform a model comparison. The tool quickly identified tables that had been added or removed, columns that had changed, modifications to relationships and keys, and other structural differences that would have been difficult to spot manually.

What would have taken days of investigation was reduced to a much more manageable process. In a large ERP environment such as Epicor ERP, where hundreds or thousands of tables may be involved, having a tool like erwin Data Modeler can provide a clear picture of schema changes and significantly accelerate analysis, planning, and troubleshooting efforts.

  ### 37. Powerful Modeling and Engineering, but an Outdated UI and Slowdowns on Large Models

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vignesh K. | CyberSecurity Analyst, Security and Investigations, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 17, 2026

**What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?**

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is how much it speeds up going from an idea to a usable database design. I can sketch entities and relationships visually and then generate the structured query language directly from the model, instead of manual writing large scripts. The reverse engineering feature is equally valuable because it lets me pull an accurate model out of an existing database so I can clearly see the current updated structure. With the shared modeling environment, developers and analysts are all looking at the same latest version of diagram, which has already helped us catch relationship issues early and avoid rework.

**What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?**

The downside for me is the user interface. It does everything I need, but the design feels dated and the navigation isn’t very intuitive, especially with so many nested menus. When my models grow large (over 150 tables), the tool can become sluggish and the automatic layout often produces diagrams that are hard to read, so I end up spending extra time rearranging entities by hand. There’s also a noticeable learning curve at the beginning—I needed a couple of days of trial and error just to get comfortable finding the right options. On top of that, the license cost is higher than some lighter or open-source alternatives, even though it does become a dependable workhorse once you’re past the setup and learning phase.

**What problems is erwin Data Modeler solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Before erwin Data Modeler, everything was a mess. Marketing would request a new feedback field, I'd tweak it in Visio, devs would code the SQL on their own, and production always ended up mismatched from our plans. We'd discover busted reports monthly because the database model was stale—total frustration and wasted effort.

Now it's streamlined. I maintain one authoritative model as the single source of truth: update it visually, forward-engineer precise changes to the database, and the whole team stays aligned. No more version conflicts or "which file is latest?" emails. Our survey data and product feedback tables are now consistent and reliable, cutting my monthly workload by 8–10 hours while giving me peace of mind that reports reflect the real structure.
