"A “True North” for Complex Data Ecosystems with Strong Version Control"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is its ability to serve as a “true north” for complex data ecosystems. In a landscape where data drift and undocumented changes are common and it provides version control, conflict resolution, and a centralized repository that functions like "Git for data models, Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

What I dislike the most is it's high pricing and old fashioned interface while they have made improvements, erwin still feels like a traditional desktop program and also it's not easy to learn easily. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Revolution in Database Management, Interface that Requires Improvements"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I like how erwin Data Modeler makes everything much clearer. Although the database I inherited was a complete mess with strange names and undocumented relationships, the reverse engineering offered by erwin allowed me to connect the tool with my database and generate a diagram automatically. This was a revelation, as I was able to visualize the more than one hundred tables, their relationships, and easily detect bottlenecks. It's like turning on the light in a dark room. Additionally, it helped me organize the entire database I had, solving many problems along the way. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

Well, I would say that it is a tool with which there are many clashes with the interface. It is quite old, and it is very complicated to use. There are menus within menus, windows on top of windows. You have to make many clicks to get to something that should be just 1. And a lot of time is lost on that. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Enterprise Data Modeling, Held Back by UI and Performance Hiccups"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is its strong support for complex data modeling and governance. It handles large, enterprise-scale models reliably and offers clear visualizations of data structures, which makes it easier to understand relationships and dependencies.

Its forward and reverse engineering capabilities are also very helpful, since they let you keep databases and models in sync with minimal effort. On top of that, the integration with data governance tools supports consistency by reinforcing standards and keeping documentation aligned across projects.

Overall, it’s a solid choice for organizations that need structured, scalable, and well-documented data modeling. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

What I dislike about erwin Data Modeler is its outdated, sometimes unintuitive user interface, which can slow down my workflow. The learning curve also feels fairly steep, especially for new users who aren’t already familiar with advanced data modeling concepts.

Performance can become a problem when working with very large models, with occasional lag and, at times, crashes. On top of that, the licensing costs are high, which may be hard to justify for smaller teams or for simpler use cases.

Finally, the collaboration features feel limited compared with more modern, cloud-based tools. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Modeling & Reverse Engineering, But UI and Performance Need Modernization"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is how it makes complex database design easier to understand through clear, well-organized visualization. My favorite feature is reverse engineering, because it lets me create database schemas from models or build models from existing databases—something many other tools don’t handle very well.

It also supports working with stored procedures, triggers, and views, and it includes version control so I can track different builds over time. On top of that, it generates accurate DDL scripts, which saves me time and helps reduce errors.

I’ve also used its automation features, which speed up my work. More recently, it introduced GenAI-based automation, and that has made the overall process even easier and more efficient. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

Although erwin Data Modeler is a solid solution for enterprise databases, I ran into a few challenges while using it. The UI doesn’t feel very user-friendly compared with more modern tools, and performance can slow down when working with large models—especially during tasks like zooming and panning, or when multiple users are working at the same time.

I also found that many features are somewhat hidden, which makes it harder for new users to learn the tool and discover what it can do quickly. On top of that, the licensing cost feels high, particularly for smaller teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Excellent Visual Clarity. There is Room for Cost Improvements"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I use erwin Data Modeler as a blueprint for my projects, to design/ document database structures. It helps me see everything in one place, like relationships and attributes, and keeps things organized, which helps catch issues earlier. The visuals make it easier to understand relationships and tables, which is very helpful when working with large projects. They also assist when I need to explain the model to other people, especially in meetings. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

I wish there were more affordable packages for smaller teams. Some of my colleagues also complain about large upfront costs. We believe that well-defined packages with costs adjusted for each package could make it more accessible and allow the costs to be more aligned with 'what you use'. "Lifesaver for Database Design with Outdated Interface"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I use erwin Data Modeler to design databases from scratch and keep all our data models organized, which helps developers and business folks stay on the same page. It solves the problem of undocumented, messy databases by providing a clear visual map, and it helps maintain consistency in data naming. I really appreciate its reverse engineering and 'Complete Compare' tools. These tools save me from the tedious manual work of mapping old databases and ensure that I don't accidentally overwrite anything important when syncing up changes. The reverse engineering feature is particularly valuable, as it generates a visual representation of a database in minutes instead of spending days manually reading SQL scripts. 'Complete Compare' acts as a safety net by flagging differences between my design and the live database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

The UI is clunky and outdated. Plus, the initial setup and licensing are a pain to deal with. Make the UI look like a modern app instead of a 2010 spreadsheet. For licensing, move to a simple email login instead of making us manage annoying license files. Honestly, not very easy. Like I mentioned before, dealing with the old-school license files and getting the server connected was a headache. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I use erwin Data Modeler mainly to design, understand and communicate data structures. I appreciate how it solves problems around clarity, consistency, and communication in data work. I like the visual clarity of data structures that it provides, as it helps in fast understanding with fewer mistakes. Reverse engineering is a huge time saver when onboarding, and impact analysis ensures safer changes and better decisions. I also enjoy its forward engineering, impact analysis, and data lineage visibility features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

1. UI/UX feels outdated, 2. Collaboration is limited, 3. Performance with large models, 4. Integration with modern data stack, 5. Automation and scripting could be stronger., Setup could be easier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Predictability and Versatility for Database Design"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

I really like that erwin Data Modeler generates very clean DDL scripts, which saves me from having to spend a lot of time manually editing the code after uploading it to the server. The tool supports almost all the databases we use, which really speeds up my work. I don't need to double-check every line of code for syntax errors or incompatible data types for a specific DBMS, because erwin does all this itself. For me, the value of the tool lies in its predictability and versatility. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

The most frustrating thing is the interface; it looks quite outdated and cluttered. Sometimes, you have to make too many clicks to find the necessary setting. I would like to see simplified navigation and menus, improved search filtering, and the option to choose between light or dark themes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful Modeling and Engineering, but an Outdated UI and Slowdowns on Large Models"
What do you like best about erwin Data Modeler?

What I like most about erwin Data Modeler is how much it speeds up going from an idea to a usable database design. I can sketch entities and relationships visually and then generate the structured query language directly from the model, instead of manual writing large scripts. The reverse engineering feature is equally valuable because it lets me pull an accurate model out of an existing database so I can clearly see the current updated structure. With the shared modeling environment, developers and analysts are all looking at the same latest version of diagram, which has already helped us catch relationship issues early and avoid rework. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about erwin Data Modeler?

The downside for me is the user interface. It does everything I need, but the design feels dated and the navigation isn’t very intuitive, especially with so many nested menus. When my models grow large (over 150 tables), the tool can become sluggish and the automatic layout often produces diagrams that are hard to read, so I end up spending extra time rearranging entities by hand. There’s also a noticeable learning curve at the beginning—I needed a couple of days of trial and error just to get comfortable finding the right options. On top of that, the license cost is higher than some lighter or open-source alternatives, even though it does become a dependable workhorse once you’re past the setup and learning phase.
