The web interface is common to most Netgear routers and is easy to use. The Netgear ProSAFE FVS336G is a VPN firewall that works well and is ideal for small businesses and remote offices. It also offers protection against DoS attacks and unwanted traffic as well as SYSLOG, and SNMP, which allow for detailed network monitoring. **What do you dislike about Netgear ProSafe Firewall?** We found the internet access controls limited and manual VPN setup could give you nightmares. Mild learning curve required compared to a home router. VPN performance could limit some high-bandwidth connections. **Recommendations to others considering Netgear ProSafe Firewall:** The main thing the FVS318 has going for it, in what is fast becoming a commodity market segment, is the fact that it's an 8 port product, at a price the other guys charge you for 4. VPN performance is par for a product that doesn't have an IPsec co-processor, and will be ok if your VPN traffic isn't too heavy. **What problems is Netgear ProSafe Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?** THIS WAS USED AT A PREVIOUS COMPANY. Easy setup. Scheduleable keyword-based website filtering. The firewall defaults to blocking all unsolicited inbound traffic, but this can be modified with custom rules, and Netgear provides a comprehensive list of predefined services. You can block or allow specific traffic and use one of three schedules to determine when they're active. ### 2. It does take a while to setup and get installed but following the directions, this makes it an easy task. Have had relatively few issues. There are a ton of security features, which is exactly why we've used it! The 8 ports also make life a little more easier once everything is up and running! **What do you dislike about Netgear ProSafe Firewall?** Well it's already quite a few years old and it took me some time to figure out that my internet wasn't slow, but that it was the Netgear unit that was reducing my bandwidth in half and pretty much costing me a little extra each and every month. I was quite disappointed to find the VPN client license was not included. Nothing in writing gave any indication of this matter either. **Recommendations to others considering Netgear ProSafe Firewall:** It seems to be a little outdated as there are other and much more up to date options on the line now available. Netgear prosafe firewall may have been ahead of its time when it first came to the market, but competition as caught up and surpassed it's adaptability and ease of use in my opinion. **What problems is Netgear ProSafe Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?** Besides purchasing the product for its main purpose of firewall protection, this was also mainly for VPN purposes, in regard to providing VPN client company staff access to test servers.I highly recommend using the VPN FVS 338 Model. Faster CPU, more RAM, higher switching fabric, and faster throughput. ### 3. It has been reliable and fast with very few issues. There have not been too many Firmware updates and the updates worked reliably and did not crash the firewall. Well, actually, I cannot say what I like best. We just had to stop using NETGEAR, because we kept getting hacked!!!! People were downloading movies and doing who knows what else. It went well for a few years, but I guess something happened and someone was able to get through and use our IP address and they started downloading movies and then our internet company saw what was happening and accused us! They told us that we were going to lose our service and that WE could possibly go to jail for stealing movies! They thought it was US! So, we just had to drop NETGEAR and go with something else! **What do you dislike about Netgear ProSafe Firewall?** What do I dislike? Well, I didn’t like that we weren’t protected. It went well for a few years, but I guess something happened and someone was able to get through and use our IP address and they started downloading movies and then our internet company saw what was happening and accused us! They told us that we were going to lose our service and that WE could possibly go to jail for stealing movies! They thought it was US! Thankfully it was easy to get rid of and easily started using a different product! No issues with our new one! This product met all of our basic requirements and offered wonderful security against potential attacks/threats. The installation process is easy and there is a decent amount of support on NetGear's site that can help you troubleshoot whenever needed. A pleasant upside for us was that NetGear works exceptionally well with a Mac environment. **What do you dislike about Netgear ProSafe Firewall?** When I was using this product, NetGear was unable to provide support remotely with VPN solutions, but from what I've read recently, this has not changed. I don't have any other dislikes or issues. **What problems is Netgear ProSafe Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?** The NetGear ProSafe Firewall offered security and comfort for us. There was a relief in the fact that important information could be transmitted successfully and securely for our customers, in addition to being convenient and efficient. The Netgear FVS318G is what I ordered as it has 8 ports and I was able to hook up my public facing devices to it via DMZ and then plug in my additional switch for internal network connectivity. **What do you dislike about Netgear ProSafe Firewall?** Heavy traffic causes frequent lockups and hangs the unit. Often required hard reset/reboot to get it back up and running. External connections to ISP would drop regularly forcing a reboot to get it back up and running. Other routers with my ISP did not have this issue and I even tested by putting a small Cisco unit and a Linksys unit in to see and confirmed it. **Recommendations to others considering Netgear ProSafe Firewall:** There are more robust platforms, if you have more than 15 users, this unit gets bogged down quickly and will hang. High utilization externally resulted in frequent lockups to the ISP requiring reboot. Just know what you are getting and size it right. **What problems is Netgear ProSafe Firewall solving and how is that benefiting you?** Limited feature set, but enough to designate/isolate traffic with vLans and route public access in/out to my public facing servers. I needed something that could do basic threat management and packet filtering for a small remote office with VPN access. I like that I could set the MAC of the unit to what my ISP was looking for and it would pull DHCP and get me connected quickly and easily. Netgear allowed me to have a solid home network. VPN access was simple to setup for external users to connect to the network and it allows SSL certificate. I was able to setup a site to site VPN with our main site for file server and application access. ### 7. This solution worked great for what we needed, but sometimes we did feel our connection slow down. The connection is constantly glitching and locking up.
