pfSense has great documentation and even better support. Even TAC Lite users get to enjoy pretty much immediate professional support with staff based in Texas!

Their support is a bit clunky, and the ordering process was opaque.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Bas S. | Founder, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

Netgate's pfsense devices are robust being based on FreeBSD. And if for some reason something goes wrong you have a rapid netgate support department to help turn things to the better.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

I don't see any major downsides. If one, I liked the metal casings of their smaller models better.

Secure access while still having a simple firewall setup you can explain to any first line of support employee

The features of the product, the ability to use add-on packages.

The documentation for some features is not really the best.
Slow updates on some packages.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Super-clear network monitoring tools

  ### 9. Nice features, ease of use, good updates

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

They are committed to the project, and software is quite stable and efficient. Ease of use, number of features, ease of implementation and ease of integration are key points

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

They dropped the free home/lab version support...

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

pppoe session to my ISP, better nat system and better dhcp support

> We're glad to hear that you appreciate the commitment to the project and the stability and efficiency of our software. We understand your disappointment with the free home/lab version support, and we are constantly evaluating our offerings to provide the best value to our users.

  ### 10. Versatile Software & Reliable Support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Networking | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

pfSense is incredibly stable & reliable. I enjoy the monitoring capabilties the most as a network engineer at a home automation & networking company. They are great for disputing service issues with ISPs.

If there are to be issues, support is quick to respond & give you a helping hand. We've had most of our issues resolved within a few emails.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Honestly, I do not see many downsides to using pfSense. If you are exploring pfSense, you are likely a network admin/engineer or a more advanced end user. So while I would not call pfSense beginner-friendly, I would imagine that is obvious.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not so much problems, but needs:

- VPN for remote staff & remote access in general.
- Firewall is reliable & not horrible to set up.
- AD/LDAP integration.
- Swift access through firewall & VPN. Speed is not compromised severly like it is with other brands we have used.
- **Versatility/Customization!** We have used pfSense in completely isolated systems solely to bring together IP-based security systems. We have also used pfSense for office networks with many VLANs, advanced firewall needs, VPN access, etc. For monitoring services with our service contract clients with residences filled with home automation (Savant, Crestron, Control4, etc.), we have used pfSense in the past, too. We are actually planning to bring them back for our new clients who ask for monitoring as we have yet to find another router/software capable of pfSense's accuracy & reliability.

  ### 11. Great open source product

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacob R. | Blogger, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2024

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Used pfSense software on a FreeBSD machine. When I saw Netgate was offering pre-configured hardware that was running it buying it was a no brainer.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Did have to contact support when I could not upgrade the Netgate 1100 to the latest build.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Not putting a network onto the Internet without a hardware firewall.

**Official Response from Esther Cheng:**

> We're glad to hear that you found our pre-configured hardware to be a great fit for running pfSense. Thank you for your support!

  ### 12. Robust, great thoughput, stable and extremley reliable.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2024

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The product provides high level of security with high troughput, and is extremely relaible.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Can be a bit daunting with a high learning curve to set up the first time, for a non technical person.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Reliable firewall platform, that allows me to work at home without interuption in connection nor degraded connection speed.

**Official Response from Esther Cheng:**

> We're glad to hear that you find Netgate pfSense to be robust, with great throughput and stable reliability. We understand that the initial setup may be daunting for non-technical users, and we're continuously working to improve our user experience.

  ### 13. A solid performing firewall platform, ideal for budget conscious applications

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Non-Profit Organization Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 10, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Low cost (in many cases free) firewall solution which can be run on no-brand hardware.
Very stable.
Advanced features such as load balancing, traffic shaping, multi-WAN support, hardware encryption support for VPN, etc. The capabilities of pfSense is comparible to very expensive enterprise grade systems that most SME's would be unable to afford.
Incredibly flexible configuration allow policy based routing and incredibly granular control over how traffic is handled.
Paid support available if required, making it ideal for budget commercial applications.
Dedicated hardware is available if a turn-key solution is desired. However, the branded hardware is expensive for what it is, but comes with suppport, etc.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The move from pfSense CE to Plus has made the platform feel a little less "open" (although still based on open source software).
Now, the only install images available are old and need to be upgraded to from CE to Plus,to get the latest release.
Some of the advanced features, if customised, can produce unexpected behavior. For example, I'm using traffic shaping and multi-WAN and have unresolved issues with incorrect shaping being applied during WAN fail-over scenarios.
Branded appliances are a little expensive for their technical specs.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Providing a secure, multi-WAN firewall for my SME. I have 3 x WAN connections (2 high speed land-lines plus a 4G backup) and pfSense has the capabilities to dynamically load balance across on connections, or fail-over. Which LAN devices use which WAN connections can be fully customised via policy-based routing, allowing me to offload certain traffic to certain WAN connections to maximise the benefit of multi-WAN.

  ### 14. Powerful, simple and good value

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sam H. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 27, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

I like the ease through which I can set up network services. For instance it took minutes to create a self signed certificate for OpenVPN server and then setup clients on multiple operating systems including iOS. Now I can get to my gear behind the Netgate pfSense firewall using transport layer security from anywhere in the world without breaking the bank or fraying my nerves with complex setup.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The process of an upgrade from a blank device to a fully functioning set of services lacked guidance on device but the online guides were adequate.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am able to access my office equipment while out of the office without having to pay for always on cloud services

  ### 15. pfSense makes it easy to keep my network safe

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ferucio C. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 04, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

pfSense has an easy to use graphical user interface and plenty of documentation which can be referenced directly from the GUI. For those that enjoy command line, pfSense provides a CLI that is easy to use and that provides access to the core OS and additional controls.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

If you like spending money on expensive solutions then pfSense isn't for you.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

pfSense keeps my network safe and secure. What else can I say?!

  ### 16. Best SMB firewall solution hands down

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** john p. | Senior IT Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

I have been using pfsense since 2004 when it was monowall. It has changed greatly over the years and has added many enterprise features. It is affordable and scales well depending on the hardware it runs on.

We now have over 50 business customers using pfsense as their primary firewall. The only real problems we have had over the years are from hardware failures, but the software has always been rock solid, stable and secure.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The only real issue I would like to see resolved is the backup and restore feature. It works great if you back up and restore the same (or at least the same model) hardware. However, if you are restoring to a system with different NIC's it can because a real pain in the backside as none of the interface names will match up properly. You then have to manually edit the config file with a text editor and change all of the interface names to it will work properly.

I would love to see a restore wizard that compares the backup file to the current hardware and makes it simple to match up the new interface names to the old ones.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it as a primary firewall/NAT for most customers and secure VPN tunnels between sites, services and end users.

The packages you can install on it also allow for other significant use cases, such as web caching to HA load balancers.

  ### 17. Support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** François D. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The support is absolutely very good in many ways.
1- The community is fantastic.
2- The pfSense documentation is extensive and thorough
3- The business support model is fantastic by its availability and openness
(We bought a TAC enterprise contract and find, it is of really very good value).

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Even though the WebGUI is well organized and very descriptive it falls short of describing the full aspects of parameters and their incidences.
It would be great if it could be linked to the documentation or a wiki or even specific forum posts.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Routing and network management

  ### 18. Customizable Firewall and Router with Great Performance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam B. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

It is a highly customizable firewall and router that will fit most of our clients' use cases. BGP IP announcement along with L3 firewall and basic routing with no vendor lock-in. We can buy direct from Netgate or put on a VM and deploy in minutes.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

No REST API Support in 2023 is making us slow down our installation of new pfSense deployments. The fractured features between pfSense+ and pfSense CE are a concern as we cannot review and audit source code for our stricter clients regarding upgrading and change notes between versions.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Core Router and Firewall for our business customers (at their office/core and edge locations). pfSense also allows us to to setup site-to-site setup via IPsec in spoke and hub for unified networking and routing between all locations.

  ### 19. pfSense is the best

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Craig P. | Computer Networking, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 08, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The stable firewall rules and powerful control mechanisms offered by pfSense have allowed us to manage internet access effectively and securely. One of the great things about pfSense is that it provides advanced features, such as creating and managing VPN connections for remote access, handling ACME Certificates and HAProxies, implementing load balancing and failover, and even creating custom captive portal pages for guest access. The web interface is user-friendly and intuitive, and the support community is always available and responsive. I highly recommend pfSense to anyone looking for a flexible and powerful firewall solution."

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

For less experienced administrators, it can be a frustrating experience and may require a steep learning curve. While pfSense is a powerful and flexible firewall solution, it may not be the best fit for those lacking advanced networking skills."

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Site Internet access and Remote Intranet access

  ### 20. Best firewall

Sometime the Firmware updates tend to brick the device

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The range of harware to fit the size of the buinsess.

**Official Response from Esther Cheng:**

> We're glad to hear that you find Netgate pfSense to be a powerful and intuitive firewall solution for your business and clients.

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Networking | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 07, 2022

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Easy to use and big community of users to help you do anything you can think of

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

You need to understand that it's not as any other router you know and there is a Linux operating system below that gui. It helps if you know a bit of Linux

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

No problems now but the wireguard vpn issue before. I hope that it's fixed by now.

  ### 24. Best firewall at low cost.

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Easy to use, easy to maintain und no problems at all

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Sometimes the UI seems a little bit old fashioned

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Connectin different sites and provide homeoffice

  ### 26. I have been using pfSense for years as a low cost firewall to protect my business and home networks.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adrian B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 27, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

pfSense is easy to configure with it's setup wizard. Now with tailscale implemented in pfSense plus software configuration of a lightweight VPN based on Wireguard is simple. pfBlocker also allows you to stop ads at the firewall! All of this is great for a novice network administrator.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Occasionally upgrading the software version corrupts the configuration which may require a reinstall and repeat setup. Upgrades require time to test and troubleshoot and one always needs to back up complicated configurations.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Tailscale implementation on pfSense is a game changer for setting up a Wireguard-based VPN. I can easily see behind four pfSense firewalls at different locations making network and computer management much quicker. Creating a private file server (private cloud) behind pfSense enhances security and privacy.

  ### 27. A a matter of fact I had recommened many times, We use netgate pfsense as our default solution

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Federico G. | Support Engineer, Business Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 27, 2022

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

First of all it's very secure, and then it has all the features that Fortigate or Juniper have. Also, love how good performance it has in virtualized environments.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

I think that if deep pack inspection, whether using surica or snort, would have a wizard and per-rule basis configuration would be great, and it would replace FortiGate for instance,

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we sell Managed Services and also sell turn-key virtualizations solution. Pfsense amazingly fits there. We can also run it on ovh cloud vmware solutions , and trying in Azure.

  ### 28. pfSense is the center of my home network!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Damon M. | Technical Sales Specialist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

pfSense has apllowed me to take full control of my home network. I consider myself an advanced user and the software offers all the tools required for me to configure, monotor and secure my home network. Snort, pfBlockNG, Ubound and even NTOP. All great tools to take control.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

I wish the hardware of some of lower end firewalls was more reliable. Ive had a number of failures due to disk corruption and probably trying to get more out of the product than the hardware was designed to handle.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Security monitoring, VPN for all my devices, networking

  ### 29. Long time user, steep learning curve but probably the best router/firewall distro out there.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Iulian V. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 25, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Complex but caters faor a lot of use cases, definitely worth your time if you are concerned about the security of your network. I've been using it since it was monowall :)

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

It really could be more user friendly, not everyone has the time (unless you're a professional) to learn it which is a pity since it really is heads and shoulders above what your typical home/SOHO router can do.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Site to site VPN is my main use, I wish the setup was more user friendly but as it is it works pretty well.

  ### 30. Great product with prompt support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 15, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Stable product, running without issues for more thant 10 years.
The documentation is very good.
We recently migrated to an appliance with pfSense+ and needed to contact the product support. They solved the problem in few minutes.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The only issue we had was the difficulty updating pfSense+ due to a recently installed interface, and that cost us a lot of time trying to find the problem ourselves. This would be unnecessary if there was any warning that this happened when changing hardware. The positive part is that after contacting product support the issue was resolved within minutes.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Connecting several VLANs to the Internet with separate NAT rules for each, Firewall, DHCP server, Virtual IP addresses, DNS resolver, NTP server.
Additionally, we're preparing the deployment of a new pfSense in a High Availability configuration.

  ### 31. A fantastic, streamlined, no-nonsense experience, without any sacrifice at all.

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

PFSense provides an extremely feature-rich platform without any of the annoying licensing structures that you find with other firewall vendors. If you're willing to invest the small amount of time it takes to learn the PFSense platform, you can build an enterprise-grade next-generation firewall that matches the features of any of the major firewall vendors' offerings for nothing more than the cost of the hardware itself. Now that I am comfortable with PFSense, I can't see myself ever using another type of firewall in my environment.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The main downside for me is that it does take a little bit of time to become familiar and comfortable with the tool, but even this is a minor quibble, since this is true of any technology. Since documentation is robust and freely available, the only cost is the time it takes to read and understand it.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a limited budget for implementing edge devices in our organization. Being open-source, PFSense is an essentially free way to meet ALL of our firewall needs.

  ### 32. Enterprise level firewall at a fraction of the price

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 30, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

After conducting an in-depth analysis of various enterprise-level solutions, we discovered that many of them not only incurred a substantial initial acquisition cost but also imposed functional restrictions while subjecting users to additional charges based on their service usage. An illustrative instance is the requirement for multiple IPsec tunnels, which necessitates an extra fee per so many tunnels. Similarly, if one desires two WAN connections, an additional fee applies. In stark contrast, PfSense emerges as an all-encompassing solution, unencumbered by limitations. Our transition from Juniper and SonicWall, dating back 5 to 6 years, led us to replace every firewall in our infrastructure with Netgate hardware running PfSense.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

It is difficult for me to identify any significant shortcomings of PfSense. However, if I were to pinpoint one aspect, I would mention that the web interface, although entirely functional and intuitive, exhibits a slightly dated design. Additionally, the inclusion of pre-defined permission groups tailored for lower-level users and managers could prove beneficial. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that these features can be implemented without difficulty, as the user rights offer a high level of granularity, necessitating only the creation of custom groups.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PfSense delivers an exceptional firewall solution that strikes a balance between user-friendliness for those with limited expertise and the capability to handle intricate tasks for experienced users. Its seamless functionality enables effortless connectivity across remote locations and facilitates the secure integration of roaming users, all while upholding stringent security policies.

  ### 33. Very powerful product!

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

pfSense is just chock-full of incredible features and the GUI interface makes it pretty easy to implement them.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

All of the power and features of pfSense may seem overwhelming for network-newbies, but there is a lot of documentation, community support, and other postings to help you discover best practices and methods.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We really needed some site-to-site VPNs and the WireGuard package is a great solution. We also needed much better control and protection than so-called business ISPs provide - and pfSense does that wonderfully!

  ### 34. pfSense has been the best option I could have chosen.

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

It has been easy to use and setup. pfSense has easy tutorials to follow for creating firewall rules.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The hardest thing is trying to get the "A" record working to use hostnames in looking up endpoints. I have not been able to figure this out and get it working.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have been able to use the OpenVPN, and now are able to switch over to a ZTNA option: Tailscale. Remote work was/is a major consideration.

  ### 35. Got tech support like you were a fortune 500 !

Their products are affordable for remote workers/SME who want to cover their network security needs. If you have a problem with an update, you open a ticket and their support team will quickly contact you the same day to help you solve the problem. They are knowledgeable and friendly people you can trust.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Technical support is in English only. For some people this can be overwhelming.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is an easy-to-deploy firewall that reduces attacks on your network and the resulting loss of productivity.

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

OpenSource and has a good support network and community. its featrue rich alongside many paid for experiences with out the expiration or subscritpion stonghold many others makes

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Somet times can be a little confused on where to locate features or they require a 3rd party app, admin accounts do not support MFA without the need of a 3rd party app which can cause some issues reguarding smaller users or less tech focused user who require this as part of the UK gov Cyber essentials certification, many paid ooptions have this as a native option. Having this built in with the ability to use Authenticator app out of the box would be ideal

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

VPN access to our network when required and an extra layers protection for office based users, our set up is all SAAS cloud based however there are items on our netwrok used for product testing that remote users need to access

  ### 37. High level of security due to open source architecture, outstanding performance and scalability

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Denis O. | Network Security Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 05, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Pfsense has been our choice for 10+ years. It is highly scalable and fits all scenarios, from home users wanting control over their internet connection to critical applications in the datacenter where hi-availability is paramount.

You want to export OpenVPN configs for clients from the dashboard? Sure! You want to automate configuration with Ansible? No problem either!

We've never encountered a situation where Pfsense lacked a feature, and new features can be easily added through additional packages without licence fees.

The most crucial aspect, however, is that security products like firewalls shall always be open source so that independent researchers may assess and verify the code. All closed-source solutions from the "big players" competitors fail at this critical point by design.

Pfsense. Works. Period.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

A centralised management solution with a GUI would be a very nice add-on. On the other hand, this might be really unfair to the competitors who may have to file for bankrupcy as it is among the only feature that PFsense does not (yet) cover...

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Protecting security parameters and enabling tricky policy-based routing over several WAN links. Some features were simply not possible with other products.

  ### 38. Switching Clients from SonicWall to Netgate

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

With pfSense available as a community sourced application and available on a dedicated solution from Netgate it makes a IT Consultants job easy. Also coming from SonicWall to pfSense setting up and creating the rules is much easier

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The learning curve for basic firewall rule programming is easy, but when it come time to install other packages you really need to focus.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Basic firewall solution and ipsec Tunnel between business sites

  ### 39. You Can Never Have Too Much Power Over Your Network

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jay M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The amount of power and flexibility pfSense brings to your network is outstanding. The integrated VPN ability means connecting to my network from the outside is easy and doesn't require additional hardware. The complete control over how packets flow to and from the internet, and even across LANs; means I have control that lets me keep my network running efficiently and securely. If you're used to dealing with just the hardware your provider gives you, pfSense is a significant step up.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The learning curve can be a bit steep. pfSense doesn't make any assumptions, and you'll often have to tell it that you want traffic moving across LANs. It can all be a little daunting if you're not used to dealing with actual firewall configurations. But once you get over that hump, you'll find a level of control you didn't think was possible.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When my provider decided to add IPv6 to its stack, I found they provided inferior and limited options for routing it. An all or nothing firewall setting with port-forwarding that required you to specify the IP on both sides was a far cry from what it could do for IPv4. Plus they only wanted to route one subnet of the many they offered my connection. No such limitations with pfSense. I also wanted to prevent IoT devices from using external DNS services. pfSense allows me to force all connections to a DNS server to the ones on the local network. It also allows me to specify which IPs from the outside world get routed to which machine; very handy if you have two machines using the same port range and want provider A to hit one machine and provider B to hit another.

  ### 40. pfSense Plus acts as an adept and powerful firewall, with a multitude of security features.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jake-Onami A. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

I have been using pfSense Plus as my firewall software for a couple years and have been impressed with its performance and features. I am running it on a dedicated Netgate Device (an older SG-5100 model). Even though this piece of hardware has been discontinued from production, I am under the impression that the pfSense software will continue to be compatible and maintained to run on this device for quite some time. If and when I DO have to migrate, I appreciate that the Community Edition (or open-source pfSense CE) is similar enough to the Plus version that I could just as easily run the software on my own dedicated hardware of choice. I also understand that there is an option to purchase a license to the Plus version which unlocks the ability to run the Plus version on a DIY machine.

At this stage in the game, running the commercial version of the pfSense Plus (closed source) firewall makes the most sense to me. The inherent simplicity and reliability of a full-fledged package with its own specialized hardware and software implemented with added features seems like a decent enough business model for a company - and I have no qualms with this approach. There are certainly FOSS purists among us who will adamantly disagree and oppose Netgate's shift away from the single-stream development model of the firewall software... but I am not one of them, and I appreciate all that the company has to offer.

The web-based user interface of pfSense is straightforward to use, which is important for me as someone who doesn't have a ton of experience with firewall software. The dashboard provides a helpful overview of the system status and traffic, configuration pages are intuitive, for they allow me to customize settings without feeling as overwhelmed as one might with a command-line interface. I also appreciate that the firewall rule builder is easy to use and allows complex rules to be easily created. The software supports various VPN protocols, which has been helpful for me because I have to connect to a VPN occasionally. Additionally, there are several packages that be installed on top of the stock firewall software - which can provide a network administrator with even more customization and other powerful tools.

One thing to note is that pfSense may require more technical knowledge than other firewall software options. However, there is a large and helpful community that provides documentation and support, so I haven't found this to be an issue. Overall, I would highly recommend pfSense Plus as a powerful and easily customized firewall platform that can meet the needs of organizations of all sizes. Although I am running a rather simple network in a small home office environment, I am enticed by the fact that the software is not only highly effective when applied to a niche use-case scenario - but it is just as capable when used in an enterprise-level network build. I am happy that I have become accustomed to the experience of hardening my network against intrusion and malicious attacks by using pfSense Plus. I feel reassured when I consider all the company has to offer, and I look forward to seeing what else they can come up with in terms of community support and feature development. I am looking forward to the years ahead - with what I hope is continued stability and reliability from both an excellent hardware vendor and a great software development firm!

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

I find that the business model of providing support packages on a subscription basis is well out of my reach, financially - but I am happy to know that a decent amount of community support is available on the forums of Netgate and elsewhere on the internet as well. Also, if I were to nitpick upon the gritty details of the matter, I would like to see additional transparency and clarity regarding the shift to closed-source software - and what this means for the future of the Community Edition of pfSense.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It serves as an excellent security implementation to help harden and secure my network against malicious attacks and intruders.

  ### 41. Open Source FTW!!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul V. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 21, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Who would have thought you could leverage enterprise firewall security for free?? I was surprised at the robust features available with pfSense. I was able to start with the Community Edition (CE) for free and register for the official version at no additional cost. With the official version, I have the option of purchasing professional support at a very reasonable expense. The cost/benefit of pfSense is over the top and well worth investigating.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

As flexible as pfSense is, there are some caveats during implementation. The biggest limitation I found was during implementation in a virtual environment. DO NOT add more than three virtual network adapters. Use one virtual adapter and make it a VLAN trunk. Then inside pfSense, use the excellent VLAN features to create interfaces.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm using pfSense to replace our older enterprise firewall solution. We looked at several "Next Generation Firewalls" and found that pfSense had all the features we sought at the best value.

  ### 42. pfSense is the most stable firewall/router I have ever used

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Justin T. | Director Of Information Technology, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 20, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The number one thing for me is the community license. I currently use it at home, but now that I have experienced several updates and learned the pfSense UI, I plan to use it professionally, as well. I am working on a plan to use something like a Netgate 4100 or 6100 as an 'introduction' to my company. Assuming all of that goes well, I would be strongly researching/considering the enterprise rackmount, HA solutions.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Mostly that I wish features came a little quicker. The stability is absolutely the main reason I like pfSense so much, but I wouldn't mind a few more updates if it meant features were coming sooner.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For my home: It gets me all sorts of features, that typical home routers do not. More than that, though, I can trust that the software is safe. I'm looking at you, ASUS-gate. For business: Please note this is not implemented, but I plan to add a small unit to help manage security between my VLANs. Believe it or not, this will simplify the network I inheirited.

  ### 43. Awesome software and good support

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

I have been using pfSense firewalls for years, previously in a HA setup in a production environment, and now as an office firewall for a tech enterprise. pfSense comes with a large feature set, a nice UI and, many hardware options. The documentation is extensive and the support has always been quite responsive.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

No problem really. Comparing config backup files can be a pain, but it's something you rarely have to do. A nice additional feature would be to enable admins to export settings in different formats, for example export firewall rules to Excel or PDF format.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It basically runs our whole office network : firewalling, dual internet access, DHCP server, internal DNS and NTP server. It also runs an OpenVPN tunnel to our datacenter environment.

  ### 44. Easy to setup and understand. Lots of features.

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

It has ALOT of the capabilities I am looking to deploy all in a single box.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

I am still having issues with multiple wireguard tunnels. Reverted to openvpn.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Multiple egress routes based on rules.
Vpn using MFA and certificates.

**Official Response from Esther Cheng:**

> We're glad to hear that you find Netgate pfSense easy to set up and packed with features!

  ### 45. Best open source firewall

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Martin K. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 18, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The best about pfsense is that it is a mature application , which runs under FreeBSD , what causes it to have better networking stack than Linux . It allows packet defragmenting , and can integrate wich other useful packages such as OpenVPN, Suricata , Snort, DNS , DHCP , etc. I like I can connect two ISPs and use both at the same time , expanding my bandwidth and/or use as a backup ISP. Don't loose internet connectivity again !

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Nothing to criticize . Some argue that being FreeBSD is different than Linux , that may some feel intimidated by this . But I don't think is something to dislike .

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Firewall , multi wan and vpn and dns and dhcp and security scan using suricata. I use in a solid state appliance mini itx which is always on 24x7 with DC UPS which is always on

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Nothing to dislike really. This was and has been a very easy relationship.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Granular control of elements at our network's edge(s).

**Official Response from Esther Cheng:**

> We're glad to hear that you are satisfied with our fast and efficient support. Thank you for your positive feedback!

  ### 47. Excellent Firewall Full of Features

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James C. | Owner, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 30, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

It is a full-featured firewall that is completely adaptable and customizable for each use case. It is suitable for all uses, from a school district to small offices and enterprise solutions.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

There needs to be some sort of central management console to view all the firewalls you have deployed if you are a service provider. Having to come up with alternative solutions that do not entirely lend themselves to the ecosystem of the firewall appliance is not ideal.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It has been replacing expensive firewalls requiring the end user to purchase a license yearly just to use their product or services. I have been able to show my customers how pfSense can accomplish the same results for a fraction of the cost without the ongoing expenses.

  ### 48. Excellent Software and Hardware. Amazing support.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cliff W. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 14, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Very easy to implement and maintain. Hardware is solid with the newer generation of devices. Being open-source is a plus, and the ability to enable specialized lists for security is fantastic.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The use of eMMC is a little confusing. I understand the use of it for small devices, but for the larger devices for business, it seems to have a high failure rate.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ability to connect multiple locations with multiple remote workers in a safe a secure manner. Ability to keep track of devices connecting to our networks and to segment particular users and devices.

  ### 49. Long time user

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

Flexability of running on any hardware. This has allowed me to recover from disaster recovery situations provided there was a backup of the configuration.
pfSense is certainly among one the best value products enabling extremely high firewall speeds in simplistic use case scenarios.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

Seperating the community and enterprise edition.
Tendency for software updates to go wrong.
Lack of well intergrated NGFW features.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

pfSense has been used by some of our customers as a cheap no frills firewall where NGFW features are not needed.

  ### 50. A SOHO firewall with close-to-large-business capabilities

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Laszlo F. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 25, 2023

**What do you like best about Netgate pfSense?**

The functionalities with the additional packages, the forum and the community, the support - all superb for a very reasonable price.

**What do you dislike about Netgate pfSense?**

The FreeBSD based OS is not for everyone, if you are a beginner in *NIX systems - practice a bit before you dig in.

**What problems is Netgate pfSense solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The built-in blacklists, the geo-filtering and the ad-free life made the work in the office easier, with less interruptions from non-reliable sources.
