"Excellent Writing Experience, Canvas Navigation Needs Improvement and crippled single payment plan."
3/5
What do you like best about Goodnotes?

(one) best writing experience using apple pencil so far, even the native notes are no match in this aspect. I'm coming from a long-term experience with pencils and digital writing, been using ThinkPad convertible notebook/tablet (x220T) throughout my MBA, and back in the day, there was no apple pencil, so this machine got me through along with the MS OneNote. And today, you don't have to lug your notebook around, an ipad is more than enough for your studies. Now I also use an e-ink android tablet, which tbh is noteworthy subpar in terms of palm rejection causing much trouble when you write and pencil tip is also gets a bit off when jotting around the corners. so the ipad is much better in terms of writing experience, yet, there is a catch, native notes, ms Onenote are not handling the pencil well, and this is the are where goodnotes catchup.

(two) and yes, YOU CAN ADD PDFS/files/whatever to the section and all these docuements become a part of the section as well. and they stay SEPARATE, i.e. not embedded into the notebook, like Evernote or OneNOte does. that's probably something boiling down to a personal choice however i prefer GN's approach because I annotated so many PDFs inside the Evernote, and there is no visually organized way to have a look at all the files, theyre hidden inside the evernote's notes. What do you dislike about Goodnotes?

goodnotes IMHO are not are the best in terms of canvas thing, i.e. onenote has infinite canvas stretching both horizontally and vertically, allowing you to find anything just by scrolling downwards or upwards, it's sort of a timeline that you slide along.

and the goodnotes force you to add new pages, which, maybe good, but when you try to locate anything you have to slide beetween endliess pages, not convenient. and also tag cloud is missing (shotout to obsidian here), so all your notebooks are still stacked up in a tree-like structure with to cross links. It's like you have biology section and you got a cell structure notebook there, but it is not accessible outside of this section.

it's paid and the plans are complicated. and i've been using onenote/evernote for a dozen of years on windows+ipadOS+macos+android fine. but when it comes to GN, one-off contract gets you iOS only version ! what?! i mean if you plan to use goodnotes on multiple devices where some are outside apple's ecosystem, you're still stuck with annual recurring fee for cross-platform sync so i ditched goodnotes eventually.

and yeah, i didn't figure out how to get local copies of notes stored on my ipad in case goodnotes decide to shut down their servers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
