Who is D2L Brightspace pricing best suited for?

Based on G2 reviewer demographics and sentiment, D2L Brightspace's pricing is best suited for mid-market and enterprise organizations in higher education, though reviewers from industries including financial services, airlines, sports, and e-learning also report strong satisfaction. Mid-market higher education institutions frequently praise the balance of features and cost relative to competitors. Enterprise users value scalability, deep customization, and integration capabilities. G2 reviewers from small businesses in higher education and e-learning also find value, particularly for institutions managing online or blended learning at scale. Organizations with dedicated LMS administrators and instructional design staff tend to extract the most value from D2L Brightspace's pricing structure.

What are the key differences between the free and paid versions of D2L Brightspace?

D2L Brightspace does not offer a permanent free version, but a free trial is available for evaluation purposes. The single paid tier, Brightspace Core, requires contacting the vendor for custom pricing and includes a comprehensive feature set covering assessments, gradebooks, integrations, virtual classrooms, analytics via Data Hub, and accessibility tools. However, G2 reviewers of D2L Brightspace consistently note that many high-demand capabilities such as Creator+, Lumi AI tools, Performance Plus, advanced analytics, and enhanced reporting exist as paid add-ons beyond the core license. This means organizations evaluating D2L Brightspace's pricing should budget carefully for add-ons to access the full range of advertised functionality.

Is D2L Brightspace considered good value for its pricing?

G2 reviewers of D2L Brightspace are largely positive about its value, with many noting it is competitively priced compared to alternatives like Blackboard and Moodle. One small business reviewer in higher education explicitly stated its cost is much lower than other LMS platforms with comparable capabilities. However, several G2 users flag that many advanced features such as Creator+, Performance Plus, Analytics, and Lumi come at additional cost beyond the core package, creating a sense of paywalled functionality. A few enterprise reviewers find D2L Brightspace expensive overall, and one reviewer cautioned about hidden add-on fees during procurement. High average ratings suggest most users consider it a worthwhile investment despite premium pricing.

"A good first impression: but maybe not ideal for public institutions in Latinamerica"
2.5/5
What do you like best about D2L Brightspace?

The interface is clean, and the course selection is visually appealing. Navigating and creating content is also straightforward and enjoyable. The class progress feature stands out as an excellent tool for teachers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about D2L Brightspace?

After my initial positive impressions with the courses and content, I found that other aspects of the platform are less refined. The forums, for example, are difficult to navigate and feel outdated compared to standard forums, making it even harder for users to participate and engage. Additionally, there are limited options for collaborative activities such as wikis, peer reviews, or projects, which are available on other platforms. As a result, learning here is mostly passive, focused on consuming content and submitting assignments. The platform also tends to be somewhat slow when creating or browsing content. Another significant issue is that pricing is set in dollars, which makes it challenging for people in Latin American economies to access the full range of services—perhaps only public institutions can afford it. Lastly, the platform is quite rigid and not easily adaptable to local needs or contexts. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
