  ### 2. Lightweight OS for Older PCs

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ushpal P. | System Admin, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 18, 2025

**What do you like best about CloudReady?**

I like best about CloudReady is that it gives old or low-performance computers a new life by turning them into fast, lightweight Chrome OS-like devices. It’s easy to install and provides a clean, user-friendly interface that’s great for web-based tasks like browsing, emailing, and using Google Workspace. It’s especially helpful for schools, nonprofits, and individuals who want a cost-effective alternative to buying new hardware.

**What do you dislike about CloudReady?**

I dislike about CloudReady is that it lacks support for Android apps and the Google Play Store, which limits the variety of applications you can use compared to official Chrome OS. It’s also heavily web-dependent, so many features don’t work offline, making it less flexible than traditional operating systems. Some hardware components, especially in older devices, may not be fully supported, leading to issues with Wi-Fi, sound, or touchpads. Additionally, it lacks certain Chrome OS features like Verified Boot and native Google Drive integration. While it’s a great lightweight option, these limitations can be frustrating for users who need more functionality or offline capabilities.

**What problems is CloudReady solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CloudReady solves the problem of outdated or slow computers by transforming them into fast, lightweight devices that run a Chrome OS like environment. This benefits me by extending the usable life of older hardware without the need to buy new machines, saving both time and money. It provides a simple, secure, and easy-to-manage system focused on web applications, which is ideal for everyday tasks like browsing, email, and cloud-based work. Overall, it helps me stay productive on devices that might otherwise be too slow or unsupported with modern operating systems.

The Bank of Ralph feature is incredibly useful, making it easily accessible for managers and ensuring smooth operations during shifts.

**What do you dislike about CloudReady?**

I don't like the pricing.

**What problems is CloudReady solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CloudReady simplifies payment processing, integrates smoothly with my management systems, and benefits from the assistance of a product specialist, ensuring efficient business operations.

  ### 4. Few resources and easy to update

It is very fast and safe which is suitable for browsing and other basic operations on the CloudReady. It features a Chromebook-like user interface that is easy to navigate and is very easy to update as compared to other operating systems.

**What do you dislike about CloudReady?**

As CloudReady is fully based on the cloud, this causes the problem when I want to work offline. Most basic applications, be it document editors or graphic editing software, exist as web applications that need internet access.

**What problems is CloudReady solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have found CloudReady useful for my old laptop. It has changed a slow moving machine to a fast and a more secure computer on which one can carry out any activity.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ofentse M. | Mr, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you like best about CloudReady?**

Lightweight and Fast: CloudReady is based on the open-source Chromium OS, which is the same foundation that Google Chrome OS is built upon. It is designed to be lightweight and fast, making it a good option for devices with limited hardware resources.

Easy to Use: The user interface of CloudReady is simple and resembles the Chrome OS interface, making it familiar to users who are used to Chromebooks. This can be especially appealing for those who are looking for a straightforward and easy-to-use operating system.

Security and Updates: CloudReady benefits from the security features of Chromium OS and Google's Chrome OS. It uses a sandboxed architecture, automatic updates, and other security mechanisms that are aimed at providing a secure computing experience.

Compatibility: One of CloudReady's main purposes is to revive older computers that might not be able to run modern operating systems efficiently. By converting these systems into Chromebook-like devices, CloudReady extends the useful life of such hardware.

Integration with Google Services: Since CloudReady is closely related to Chrome OS, it offers seamless integration with Google services such as Google Drive, Gmail, and the Chrome Web Store.

Management Features: CloudReady offers some management features, which can be useful in educational or enterprise settings. Administrators can manage and control multiple CloudReady devices from a central console.

**What do you dislike about CloudReady?**

Offline Functionality: While CloudReady is designed to work well with an internet connection, some users might find it limiting when offline. Many of its features, including the majority of applications, rely on cloud services and may not work optimally without an internet connection.

Hardware Compatibility: While CloudReady aims to bring new life to older hardware, there might still be compatibility issues with certain hardware components. Not all drivers and peripherals might be supported, which could lead to frustrating experiences for some users.

Dependency on Google Services: CloudReady is closely tied to Google's ecosystem, which means it heavily integrates with Google services and requires a Google account to access some features. This level of integration might not be ideal for users who prefer to avoid using Google services.

Limited Customization: CloudReady's interface and user experience are similar to Chrome OS, which is known for its simplicity. While this can be appealing to some users, those who prefer a highly customizable or advanced operating system might find CloudReady's options limited.

Privacy Concerns: Just like with Chrome OS, there might be privacy concerns related to data collection and sharing with Google. Users who are particularly concerned about their online privacy might be wary of using an operating system so closely tied to Google's services.

Lack of Native Software: CloudReady's focus on web applications means that some users might miss having native applications for tasks that aren't well-suited for web-based tools

**What problems is CloudReady solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Cost-Effective Solution: Instead of investing in new hardware, individuals and organizations can save money by repurposing existing devices with CloudReady. This is particularly useful for schools, non-profit organizations, and other budget-conscious entities.

Simplified Computing: CloudReady's user-friendly interface and Chromebook-like experience make it ideal for users who want a simple and straightforward computing environment. It's especially beneficial for individuals who primarily use web-based applications and services.

Security and Updates: CloudReady benefits from the security features inherent in Chromium OS and Chrome OS. It offers automatic updates and a sandboxed architecture that helps protect users from malware and other security threats.

Faster Performance: Older hardware might struggle with resource-intensive modern operating systems, leading to sluggish performance. CloudReady's lightweight design and optimized performance can lead to faster and more responsive computing on older devices.

Education and Enterprise Solutions: CloudReady can be an attractive option for educational institutions and businesses looking for cost-effective solutions for providing computing resources to students, employees, or users. The management features provided by CloudReady can also simplify administration in such environments.

Access to Web-Based Tools: As CloudReady is designed to work seamlessly with web applications and services, users who rely heavily on online tools will find it convenient. The integration with Google services further enhances this aspect.

Reduced E-Waste: By repurposing older hardware instead of discarding it, CloudReady contributes to reducing electronic waste, which is an important environmental concern.

Consistent Experience: CloudReady provides a consistent computing experience across different devices, which can be beneficial for users who want familiarity and ease of use across various devices
