I also like the price - the multi-OS edition is still under $100 - I believe, at the time when I purchased it, it was around sixty dollars. It is a stable app on both PC and Mac, AND it comes with a portable version that you can carry around on a USB drive. Most compare tools doesn't allow you to change how the tool compare 2 contents, but BC allow you to do so by telling the tool which lines should compare to which, the tool then recompare the contents from the target line onwards. The ability to define custom syntax is also useful as you can tell the tool which type of content change is important, and which type is not (e.g.: the comments). This is very useful if you have the content types that is not recognized by BC. **What do you dislike about Beyond Compare?** Table comparison can be more useful if BC can show side-by-side view (vertical view) when viewing selected record instead of top-down view (horizontal view). It saves me from having to compare files one by one, very intuitive, and it also takes very little time to complete the comparison process. Beyond Compare is an excellent program for synchronizing different PCs. What I like most is that Beyond Compare supports FTP and exclusion rules, so I can always keep the local server synchronized with the online one. It allows you to quickly locate the differences (highlighting them) and make the necessary changes in each of the analyzed files. Additionally, you can quickly access these differences through a column on the left side of the screen (this option is very useful when comparing very large files). **What do you dislike about Beyond Compare?** I haven't noticed any significant flaws that I dislike. It fulfills all the types of uses I might have for comparison software. However, large files take a bit of time to process and detect differences. Be careful with spaces and new lines. **Recommendations to others considering Beyond Compare:** Beyond Compare offers a free trial version, so there really is no risk in trying it. There are many comparison tools out there: I use it every day and it definitely does the job for me. It helps me compare the source code between modified and unmodified versions. This comparison tool can also help compare binary files. I have tried, but the use of the feature wasn't clear to me. Among its best features, we have binary comparison, via CRC, and through rules based on attributes and properties. It also provides us the possibility to synchronize changes at the file, directory, and text levels. Additionally, it accepts parameters from the command line, which allows us to automate actions. **What do you dislike about Beyond Compare?** When we try to compare several directories simultaneously and they have many files, the comparator often marks some transfers as failed, and we have to relaunch the process for those that have failed. **What problems is Beyond Compare solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently, we do it to compare the current files with the existing backups, in this way we only make partial copies of the files that have changed. I need code comparison in Salesforce, as the same code is being accessed by more than one person at any given time. This means before I commit my code, I first check it with a copy of the existing code to see, If I am only committing my own changes. I've tried many others (mostly free ones) and decided this one was more than worth the money. Beyond Compare (BC) lets you compare folders and/or files for differences and allows in-place merging of files. The interface is intuitive and assists you in looping through the differences. **What do you dislike about Beyond Compare?** I haven't run into anything that really jumps out at me as a problem. I'm sure I don't use BC to it's fullest potential -- there are many other file type comparisons that I don't use (MP3 compare, picture compare, registry compare, etc). **Recommendations to others considering Beyond Compare:** There are many comparison tools out there -- I use this one every day and it definitely does the job for me. We use Team Foundation Server as our source code repository, but instead of using the internal code compare/merge tool, I have it launch BC. It will even allow you to compare text in documents to determine differences. **What do you dislike about Beyond Compare?** It would be nice to be able to move data around that perhaps doesn't exactly match up in a folder-to-folder comparison. Ex: having a text file that corresponds to a PDF, but is located in a different subfolder. It would be really awesome if the tool could find the text file and move it to the same folder as the PDF. I believe the trial is 30 days or perhaps even 30 days of actual use.
