What do you like best about AWS CodeBuild?

When it comes to managing the provision, scalability and server resource handling, this platform has eliminated it all as it manages everything on demand. One of the best thing is it's capabilities to build the source code based on the yaml file we write has thrilled me due to its overwhelming compiling feature for the source code. What do you dislike about AWS CodeBuild?

Aws CodeBuild has its own set of boundaries which brings unnecessary set of policies like for example if my source is out of aws codeCommit or github or S3 then it is quite tedious to set up the source while configuring codeBuild and it is quite poor with the UI for its console. Ability to spawn a build on-demand, via the API, CLI (aws codebuild), or the web console

Consistent performance across builds, with options for artifact caching etc.

Support for a wide range of source repositories: GitHub, CodeCommit, etc.

Ability to upload build artifacts directly to S3 or CodePipeline

Simple YAML-based build configuration with clear pre- and post-build actions

What do you dislike about AWS CodeBuild?

AWS Free Tier: https://aws.amazon.com/free/#AWS_CodeBuild_ only offers 100 minutes of build time per month, which means you'll have to allocate a budget if you integrate CodeBuild with any kind of frequently-invoked CI/CD

Private repositories are not fully supported yet (except for AWS-native CodeCommit)

Lacks flexibility as there is only a single build step (with a single container image); if you want to customize the steps you will probably need to create and host your own container image containing all the required utility programs/tools/commands. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering AWS CodeBuild:

If you need regular builds, it may be beneficial to set up artifact/dependency caching at CodeBuild project level in order to reduce build time.

Note that private repositories (e.g. on GitHub) may not be supported.

If you use S3 (or any other storage-as-a-service solution) as the build target, make sure you have a mechanism to clean up old build artifacts as otherwise you'll end up with lots of garbage. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS CodeBuild solving and how is that benefiting you?

Performing builds in our own serverless IDE Sigma, on behalf of our users.

It means we don't have to manage or pay for a dedicated build server, and users can build their projects right within their own AWS accounts without disclosing their sources to a third party service.

The free tier pretty much eliminates user-side costs, and we can ask CodeBuild to directly upload the build artifacts to S3, which we can then use in the deployment process. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about AWS CodeBuild?

You are only charged when the builds are run and not for any resources standing by for a build request. It's easy to integrate to a build process with github. And can fetch the build steps in the same repo when you specify a buildspec.yaml file. Can be used as a way to run code that takes a lot of time to run and needs to be run sporadically. Can be integrated to a jenkins environment as worker nodes. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS CodeBuild?

The user interface just got (since November of 2018) an overhaul and is not as bad as before. When the build processes are created by a Cloudformation script the documentation to integrate with github is not very helpful and needs more detail. There aren't many compute types options, right now you only chose from a set of 3: - 2 GB Memory and 2 vCPU - 4 GB Memory and 4 vCPU - 15 GB Memory and 8 vCPU Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS CodeBuild solving and how is that benefiting you?

Building and testing code for a variety of projects, using CodePipeline and CodeBuild for CI/CD. For running loadtests that are integrated in a CI/CD to test the environment for any degradation with new code. Recommendations to others considering AWS CodeBuild:

it's been obvious that AWS has been missing a managed build service. For the past year we've had to work around this by building our own build service on ECS and ECR. You'll need to figure IAM, Build Project JSON, and Build Spec YAML to get it all working. But once you do, you've unlocked managed builds on small, medium or large compute types. What do you like best about AWS CodeBuild?

The tool was very easy to use... when I need it, without any previous knowledge, I can configure an entire pipeline with CodeCommit, CodePipeline, and CodeBuild and CodeDeploy. The documentation is very large to read... sometimes you have to read a lot in large documents with many technical descriptions about all available options to solve a simple doubt. I would like it to have a really simple demo about easy user cases. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
